Do you have any idea how hard it has become to get everything Optimus Prime, Megatron, Optimus Primal & BW Megatron, Ultra Magnus, Rodimus, Galvatron, Starscream, Jazz, Swindle Grimlock, Bumblebee, Soundwave and the list goes on and on. The problem is every time you "complete" a character, you add another one to fill the slot. So now you have all of this new stuff to track down but they keep putting out more of the characters you "completed" so now it's not done anymore. Optimus Prime and Megatron, you expect them to have new stuff every few months but Rodimus or Swindle? Munitioner alone increased how much I'd spent on Swindle by 50% and between Animated, Protector (& Sidearm) and Takara's Masterpiece, Rodimus is looking to cost $320 over the next 5 months. That's without counting the eventual ToysRUs MP Hot Rod that's getting an exclusive Targetmaster.

And where do you draw the line? Despite owning several G1 Optimus I display Music Label because of the superior head and paint job but do I get the white one and call it a Magnus? I actually had to cite presidence like an attorney to myself that I passed on the Nike sneaker white Optimus because it wasn't officially a "Magnus" (but the real reason I passed on that was it wasn't white it was cream colored!)

And that's on top of trying to create a Classics (I hate the term CHUG) perfect modern G1 and all the customs and kitbashing I do.

A lot of collectors say they think they have OCD. I think collecting gives us OCD tendencies as a survival mechanism! Now back to making Verity Carlo to go with my Wreckers before hitting 2 Targets before work to look for WfC Soundwave. It never really ends...

I see you're making a LSotW Verity, but...

I'm going to attempt to boil down a lot of the points that've been made into a simple, yet oversimplified choice:

Character completion or figure completion.

This mainly addresses the Japanese vs. American versions, G1 reissues and the like. Frankly, if I have a version of the character I like, I'm happy. If you're down with just having a representation of the character, you'll save a lot of time, money and space.

I'm mainly talking about characters within a line, though, as opposed to collecting a character across all lines. If you're into that, watch out for some of the cross-line traps. Using Rodimus as an example, let's say I'm all about the dude, but despise the Animated aesthetic. Do I get the character because I want him, just to see that ugly figure on the shelf that I hate? Count in the gas that it takes to hunt it down in the one TRU halfway across town after scouring for three weeks across four TRUs and you have a lot of money spent on a figure you never really wanted in the first place. After all, if they had painted it brass and called it Doorknob, you probably wouldn't be interested.

If you're more into collecting all the figures in a line... well, I say good luck on that Shining Unicron, friend :KREMZEEK:

Oh no you don't, Punchy, you're not getting into my head that easily. I've been making customs for over a decade and I don't let other peoples work bother me. I'm making mine to scale (such as it is) from a HoC Arcee with some exosuit Daniel tossed in. At one point I was going to give it more articulation but I ultimately concluded I don't care! :P

Simplifying is great, but you're forgetting SERIES completion. A collector could easily get all the Classics Deluxes and Voyagers and say they have a complete Classics collection without picking up the minicons or legends toys. Same goes with U.S. Beast Wars, Transmetals, Animated, Armada, etc.

As far as G1 goes, I believe that having a reissue covers your bases for that character. And as far as completing a G1 collection, you can break it down by category to make the task easier. For example: You could start with chasing after all the 1984 Decepticons, because there are only a handful of those. Or you could say, "Hey, I'm going to buy all the combiner teams." The only ones I have left are Predaking and Monstructor.

Now, here's where I'm going to throw in a curveball: Childhood toys versus stuff you have as an adult. For a while I didn't want to mix my collections. Here's why: Nothing could make me sell my childhood toys. As for my adult collection... eh, whatever. Practically, if I wanted a new Bludgeon, I would have to pay nearly $200 for him. No thank you! The one from my childhood is complete and would only benefit from a new, fairly common, pretender shell. Instead of having two Bludgeons, I'm allowing the rare items from my childhood collection to fill in the gaps of my adult collection.

:) Just showing what I did for BotCon. I froze most of the joints. I think she's a cool character.

Ah, I didn't realize you made it. Good job! The character kinda grew on me until they all but dropped her to focus on Hunter. Poor doomed Hunter...
