Scratchbuilt DeLorean Autobot- Update 6/3 - ROBOT MDOE

Post all your customized Transformers here. Whether it's a small mod or a true kitbash, we'd love to see it!

Postby Greyryder » Fri Sep 08, 2006 11:14 pm

Obviously you don't know how slowly I work, or how short my attention span is. And, a fender job, and a couple of guns is a far cry from a full robot.

I can't wait to see more of this. I love DeLoreans.

Update: 9/17- Four New Pics

Postby Flashback77 » Sun Sep 17, 2006 11:58 am

Well I was tardier then I anticipated, but as promised here are four new pics of Flashback (tentative name). I know there isnt too much to see, but scratchbuilding has proved quite a challenge.

Image
Here is the bulk of work I did, sculpting the torso and front of the car. You can sort of make out the DL shape here, though there is no bumper yet.

Image
Here is the rear of the car with some new fenders. These still need to be reinforced. I will lilkely layer them with thinner plastic as its much easier to cut.

Image
Here we have the hinges for what will become the shoulders. These are designed after Cybertron Armorhide's to avoid big slots in the fenders. These had to be redone twice and caused a large delay. Just held together with pins for now. Also visible is the mock up for one front fender. Attaching these securely is a puzzle yet unsolved.

Image
And finally robot form starting to resemble something. The torso looks a bit tall for now, but will be covered somewhat by the addition of the car bumper. Also visible is the head cover and the post it will be mounted on.

Looking good, so far!

Shoulders are so much fun, aren't they?

Thank you. You said it. I originally planned to use the hinge design from Cybertron Downshift but the DeLorean's strange fender shape won't allow that. I'm not too sure this design will work either, I may have to come up with something new altogether. Arms are by far the biggest PITA on this project.

Delorean, has been one of my favourite cars in my childhood., and the idea of making it into a Transformers is like having the best of both world.
But you attempt to built it from scratch is awesome.

The frame was seamless and with the body of the robot taking shape. Man, you are amazing. Every piece is so well cut and pieced together.
Absolutely Jaw dropping work.

I earn my utmost respect man.

Keep up the fantastic work, can't wait to see the final product.. any sketches or teaser?

Looking good, man. Sorry I apparently didn't reply to your email, my bad. I'll look for it again. One of my friends pointed this thread out to me so I joined just now (while goofing off at work).

I've seen a few designs in the last few years of people showing me their DeLorean TF designs, some work out, some don't, and most don't get past the drawing phase. Kudos for making the leap to a physical model.

I see you're doing some nice looking joints like I made for Redline. I look forward to seeing more.

I've not lost total interest or hope for the hobby, I've got projects floating around up there that I may never get to, and owning a real DeLorean keeps me plenty busy with club activities, etc. on the weekends.

I'm going to Botcon '06 and I'm going to be taking stock of my TF activities in the near future, including at least lurking on boards like this one. I've been on A.T.T. since '01 and it's getting... sketchy.

Dude! Nice to hear from the man himself. Thank you for your kind words. Your work on Steelskin & Redline certainly inspired me to get into scratchbuilding. I've long been a DeLorean fan myself (though I dont have a real one!). I'm not ashamed to admit that I absolutely copped some of your techniques used on Redline. I just hope Im up to the task. Keep an eye on the thread, I will add pics & remove older ones as I progress.

BTW, Insane Galvatron on this board is trying his hand at a DeLorean Alternator.

Have a great time at Botcon!

New Pics Nov 5th

Postby Flashback77 » Sat Oct 28, 2006 2:43 pm

OK folks I'm back. Haven't abandoned the project at all, just working more slowly. Here are some pics of most of the major car pieces mocked up & fitted together. Plz forgive the poor door alignment for now, I'm trying to fix it.

Thanks for an update!! Looking an awful lot like a DeLorean now!

It's nice when you can sort of tape it all together and sit back to have a look.

What's your plan for the wheels? That's usually where I start, seeings how I can't cast my own rubber tires!

"Please forgive the poor door alignment"?
You make an awesome model like like this, and all you're worried about is that the chuffin' doors are a fraction out?

I dunno, some people are just never happy...

That door alignment can mean he difference between a half-way decent model and a great model. Gaps in a model show shoddy craftsmanship. Even if the engineering is superb, poor craftsmanship and attention to detail can ruin an otherwise great model. So, yes, by all means, he should work on correcting that deficiency in the model at this stage, rather than later.

I definitely agree with Tramp on this one. If you're unhappy with the alignment of things, you should fix it as soon as possible. It's really painful to take a step backwards sometimes, but in the end if you re-do it better, you'll be 100% happier. This figure will look amazingly awesome when it's done, but if the alignment is fixed it'll be perfect. I don't think I have enough skill to make something as beautiful as this.

I'm very pleased with my progress so far, esp. as this is my first ever scratchbuild. But I don't want the entire thing sullied by lousy door alignment. Its going to be tricky- I may have to settle for the odd gap here & there. I could photog it with the doors up, but that would expose the robot innards like early Diaclone. I'll do my best of course.

Everyone's kind words mean much to me. I know there are a lot of talented peeps keeping an eye on this :)

Well its been a while. I just wanted to drop in with a quick, picless update. I took a break from Flashback during the holidays thanks to life's distractions, but I've slowly been getting back into him. Seeing some of the latest work here like Alt Mirage and MP Warpath inspired me to get crackin once more. Sometimes ya just need to step away ya know?

Major construction is finished, I'm working on the time travel greebles at the moment. I've decided to hold off on pics and just reveal the finished product when the time is right.

We now return to your regularly scheduled customizing :D

Thank you sir- he is nearly done, i'm currently sculpting the head & hands and doing some testfits. I may post a pic or the final mockup before painting, since that's where I'll likely ruin it lol.

You won't ruin this piece! You've come this far! I'm really excited to see this piece finished. Just keep working man!

I'm back everyone, sorry I haven't been around much. Work is killer and I'm back in grad school on top of it....not a lot of time for customizing or even just enjoying my collection.

Anyway Flashback is starting to come together. He's painted, and I'm working on detail bits and trying to get him to line up properly in time machine mode.....easier said then done.

Cheers...

I bailed on A.T.T. around then. They were dangerously close to disappearing into their own @ssholes.

Heh, maybe I will post a teaser pic. But in all honesty I am a bit discouraged. After seeing masterpieces on this site like HOS Prime, etc and that Japanese fellow's Cyclonus, Wheelie and now Octane, Flashback looks like Fry from Futurama made him. LOL
