Smurfette will have company of other female smurfs besides sassy. I wonder what names will they will think of? Charity, bossy, sweetie, and flirty. The rumor was that it was focus on girl power.

Although I'm generally outraged by the raping of my childhood that Hollywood has embarked upon in the last few years (seriously--Speed Racer?!), I'm not as enraged by Smurf movie, mostly because Smurfs are, well, smurfy.

As for the 'girl power' aspect--what does that even mean? We forklift a bunch of new characters in to, what? Be all cute and plucky and spunky? To wear a lot of pink? I've seen a lot of 'girl power' stuff, like Bratz, (gag) and Winx Club (oh please), and I have to say I don't find girls being boy crazy and obsessed with fashion to be all that empowering. It's the same old message of females being all surface, no substance. Show me a female cartoon character who doesn't tart up in skin tight togs? Baroness? Jean Grey? Heck, even Black Arachnia brings new meaning to the phrase 'golden globes'.

On the other hand we have GI Jane, who basically has to 'become' a man to succeed. I don't like that either. I've been in the Army and I found that, as a female, if you pull your own weight, eventually, you'll be accepted as who and what you are--without having to shove your cleavage in someone's face or do 'roids. Where do you ever see THAT message?

The smurf's sucked the first time around and doubt this will be any different. Girl power my ass since no self respecting guy would go see it they had to aim the film at girls way to go and I bet it will be cg and in digital 3d as well so you will be able to see the smurfs coming out of the screen at you.

Agree on most: Smurfs sucked. Probably 'aiming' at girls because, well, girls always get the proverbial shaft. Sheesh. WHen I grew up, my possible 'role models' were either the Baroness or Velma. And I hear it's supposed to be 'live action' which just sounds...mind-crampingly horrifying.

But seriously--you say, what self=respecting *guy* would go see it? I'd amend that, please, to what self-respecting sentient being would go see it?

That being said, if I find myself teaching Mass Media when it comes out, there is a high likelihood of me forcing them to see the movie as part of the course requirements.

Seriously though, if time travel were possible at the present, you'd like to think that Hollywood people would A) not be the only people priviledged enough to use the machine, and B) could find something better to do than go back in time, violate your childhood while you were still living in that time period, and then subsequently only allow you to be cognizant of the assault in 2009.

That's just wasteful.

You mean they are actually doing a Smurf movie? I hear rumor of this 2 years and I'm still waiting. If it turns out to be another "I'ma s female see my testosterone" count me out. They already messed Arcee up w/ a bad-ass on PMS female personality in the comics. So contradictory to who she is.

That's what the world really needs, a Smurf movie. All our troubles will soon come to an end, because they are making a Smurf movie.

Smurf movie more likely a sign of the Apocalypse than thing that will tease away all of our troubles.

IMDB site says not only is it up for a 2010 release, but it's part of a planned trilogy.

Mabey they will make some nice new smurfs to reflect today's society. I mean, jokey smurf, handy smurf and brainy smurf are a little outdated. Kids can't relate to that. Perhaps they will add junkie smurf, emo smurf and sociopath smurf. And smurfette can have an eating disorder and spend most of the film running to the woods to puke up smurf berries so her thighs don't get bigger. Now that would be absolutely SMURFY !!!

"Old Smurf as Alpha Trion"? Interesting take on that. I actually thought ol Papa Smurf reminded me more of Optimus Prime.

And this may be slightly off topic since we are talking about the movies, but did anyone else notice that Gargamel actually caused more damage to the Smurfs in the opening credits than he ever did in the actual show. Dud destroyed their village fer cryin out loud!
