Well you were standing right next to me when Ryan pronounced it in the proper 1986 cartoon fashion at my first botcon. Im not sure why the guy with the European accent insists on pronouncing it "sabertron". Is it just the dialect where hes from or does he seriously think he is avoiding a hasbro lawsuit by pronouncing it that way ?

It's how the Japanese actually pronounce it. Here's how it works:
The faction: サイバトロン (Saibatoron), written and pronounced as Cybertron
The Planet: セイバートロン (Seibātoron), written as Seibertron and pronounced as "Saybertron". It's Japanese wordplay on "Cybertron" and the Japanese word 星 (hoshi or sei), which means "star" or "planet"
That's all there is to it. And now back to our regular programming.

Not arguing with your explanation, but wasnt the whole fiction created in america by sunbow productions ? Werent the english versions translated into Japanese after sunbow created them ? In my book, the original pronunciation supercedes any interpretation created after the fact. Just saying....obviously this is one of those you say tomato, I say tomaato things...

Nope, the fiction was created in America first by Bob Budiansky of Marvel Comics.Rated X wrote:Not arguing with your explanation, but wasnt the whole fiction created in america by sunbow productions ?

The Sunbow cartoon was the second interpretation first worked on after the fact, which according to your statement, would make the original comics supersede the cartoon.

Well I was right about the fiction being created in America. All im stressing is how people are trying to justify "saber-tron" as a proper pronunciation. I dont fault people in Japan for pronouncing it different. But when people who speak perfect english do it on purpose, I find it a bit annoying. Especially when they watched the damn cartoon in english throughout their childhood. Its like if I were to start calling you "Cyberblade".

I get ya. The justification is in regards to the pronunciation of the term as this website's name, rather than as the name of the planet in the fiction.Rated X wrote:Well I was right about the fiction being created in America. You are correct in saying it is wrong to speak the name of the home planet of the Transformers as "Sabertron" in the context of the American TF fiction, but this website isn't the home planet of the Transformers, so it's acceptable for its name to be spoken as "Sabertron" in regards to it being this website's name.
It's like if I had a website called "Teletron.com". We know the fictional computer's name is more properly said as "Teletraan" or "Teletran", but since my website would be a website and not the fictional computer itself, it would be expected for people to refer to the website as "Teletron" instead of "Teletraan" or "Teletran" since "Teletron" would still be the site's name, no matter how incorrect it would be to refer to the fictional computer by that name.

This is what happens in advertising every day. Brand names and company names do not adhere to regular spelling or grammar. Arguing the pronounciation of Seibertron is the same as arguing the pronouciation of Coca Cola or Will.I.Am. The company or brand decides.

Otherwise, he would have been better off calling this site by the name of "Saibertron" ("SAI" instead of "SEI") if he really wanted to be spoken as "Cybertron".

Well Ryan pronounces it "Cybertron" when you meet him face to face. In my 4 botcons, ive never once heard him whip out the "saber" when introducing himself. If that doesnt make it the official pronunciation, then what does ? I understand the need to change the spelling to avoid lawsuits, but changing the pronunciation is a bit extreme.

Doesn't Ryan always pronounce it "Say-bertron" in the podcast? I've never heard him say Cybertron.com in reference to this site. (Never met in person though so can't say anything about that)

Everytime he said it in front of me at botcon, he pronounced it in the traditional Sunbow cartoon fashion. Maybe he plays it safe on the podcasts since its linked to the site. But all the tomes Ive been around him at botcon he has never whipped out the "saber" and slashed tradition. Im not saying he doesnt use it, im just saying ive never heard him use it in person with my ears.

It's the exact opposite in all instances that I've hung out with him. The past three BotCons and the Grand Opening of Transformers: The Ride in Orlando, FL (I was invited as a media guest representing Unicron.com). In all those cases he and I hung out, he only ever said it as "Saber-tron" to me, and only spoke "Cybertron" when talking about the fictional planet or the 2005 series.Rated X wrote:Well Ryan pronounces it "Cybertron" when you meet him face to face. Who knows ? I know what I heard, especially the first time he introduced himself to me in 2010. Thats the only reason I brought this whole thing up.

Ryan wanted the site to be called Cybertron.com, but that address was taken by another fansite at the time. The domain name cyberton.com is still unavailable, although the site it directs you to is empty.
And since that domain was unavailable, he went with the Japanese version as a place holder till Cybertron.com would become available. It did become available while I was still on staff, but Ryan did not purchase it due to the fact that the domain name has become somesort of a brand to him now and changing it after such a long time would only lead to confusion, plus the guy wanted far too much money.
That is what I got from Ryan and old school members of the site ever since I joined.
On top of that I believe that when the site first started, Ryan was likely still under the impression that the G1 Transformers was anime (something loads of people believed because the show looked "like" anime and due to the Japanese origins of the toys), all the galleries to the US shows and fiction where under their Japanese names till fairly recently, while the Japanese original shows where listed under their US names. Which confused the sh*t out of me. But this is just speculation on my part, so maybe baseless.

Re: So why does seibertron hate 3rd parties ?
Well that was a fun read....I learned that I am glad I don't live in Miami. Seems to be a logic sucking vortex operating in the area, and the resulting void filled with pompous, self aggrandizing gibbity jab.
On topic, its not hard to find third party news. I don't get the uproar. This is the best Transformer site, Mr. Ryan can do as he pleases, its clearly working anyway....

I thought it was because Hasbro has affiliations with this site and they were not happy that "competing" 3rd party products were being featured on the website..

Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
I look forward to attending a Botcon soon only to settle matters with several idiots in person (yes this is a threat).
