Studio Series 86 Discussion

When they said "every character" is "on the table", that isn't the same thing as saying every character is getting made (or remade). That just means every character who appeared in the movie has the available option to get a SS86 release. But not every option is going to happen. They even asked if, say, a Studio Series 86 Grapple could happen, despite the previous release of Earthrise Grapple. The answer was that they could do it, but it read as if the implication was "if they wanted to do it".

As long as it's a possibility, there's nothing wrong with expecting it to happen.Sabrblade wrote:When they said "every character" is "on the table", that isn't the same thing as saying every character is getting made (or remade). IMO if they do decide to include already released characters, they could just do what they did with Blaster, and release the same figure in the newer packaging, in this case SS86. Unless of course there's a significant change in the mold for some reason.

According to Evan, it's not even close to over for SS86 as he says EVERY CHARACTER in the movie is "on the table"(assist from DMac). I know that sounds...ambitious, but it does seem to indicate there's no end in sight to this part of Studio Series.
That would mean redoing a whole lot of figures already done really well in WFC and Legacy. Do we really need another Cyclonus? Glavatron? All the Seekers? Insecticons? I have a lot of doubts.
Emerje
Maybe, they would redo them in cartoon decos like Cliffjumper and Kup.

While I would be in favor of SS86 continuing, it just does seem like there has to be an end.
I can’t really even think what changes/improvements would have to be made for me to buy all 6 seekers again…. Same with the Insecticons, especially considering imo these Legacy versions are really, really good.
I didn’t mention it in my last post because I’ve said it a long while back, but for me, I’m hoping for a new
Soundwave
Astrotrain
Shockwave
As someone mentioned, a legit, non-exclusive release of VW Bee is due as well.
Between those 4, I guess SS86 could maybe spill into 2025.
I’m really glad to hear that Sunstreaker is happening— I searched for that figure and never found him.
And if we’re not going to get an Astrotrain, I’ll definitely take Shockwave.
Along those same lines, a new Astrotrain may warrant being leader class, so if he’s not on the books, I’d take a new Soundwave with Ratbat and Buzzsaw as a leader class release.
Shockwave should be a voyager.
I have always thought Springer would get a SS86 release, even if it’s basically unchanged from the Seige version.
But other than milking more Junkions, I don’t see how they keep this subline going much past 2024.
Now way past next year, I could see a SS subline, possibly reclaiming the name of “Classics” that brings back G1 characters in screen-accurate versions.
I just don’t see Hastak completely moving away from G1 characters.
This could also be where/when they revisit the combiners.
But I’m talking 2027 or later, to where the last round of mainline combiners will be well over 10-12 years old (obvsly not including Legacy Menasor).

If they keep SS86 going past 2024 then I think it's logical end will be with the 40th anniversary in 2026, my head and body hurts now.

Not gonna lie, Chuck I figured you were way younger than me.
Not in a bad way, but doesn’t seem right there’s only 3 years between us.
Also, wanted to share my initial thoughts on Brawn…
Overall I think he looks good, or at least good enough.
What I find is off about him:
Even if he’s only as tall as Huffer, his proportions look off.
His head should have been larger relative to his limbs and torso…
When you look at his character model, his proportions are of an older kid;
Someone who’s body hasn’t caught up to the size of their head.
The other issue for me is I wish they could’ve managed to get his feet closer to the animated version…
This figure has extremely flat feet, where as the illustrated cartoon had almost “boot” or “high top” shaped feet that almost seamlessly matched the contour of the lower legs… I would’ve appreciated this being more closely matched.
I’m sure I’ll still get him, but I am slightly let down by this reveal.
This just doesn’t quite hit like the vast majority of SS86 figures have.

My sister was born in 1976 if that's what the 76 in your username means.
My concern with Brawn is that the figure looks really back heavy, hopefully I'm wrong.

Blaster is a little different since he was a sort of "preview" figure always meant for Legacy but bumped up to Kingdom to pad the final wave. While Kingdom and Legacy are parts of two different larger series, as far retail is concerned they're all part of the same Generations line that takes up the same space on the shelves so transplanting one into the other isn't a big deal and we've continued to see that with package refreshes. SS is considered an entirely different Generations line and any transplants we've seen have been either retooled (SS86 Starscream) or exclusive repaints (Buzzworthy SS86 Cliffjumper, G2 Jazz). If Sunstreaker was the same unaltered mold as the Earthrise figure then he'd probably be a Buzzworthy repaint rather than part of the mass retail line.

Yeah, I’m a 76er.
I’m going to give Hastak the benefit of the doubt that they didn’t make Brawn back-heavy…
I’ve looked at photos more since my last post, and still,
this figure looks like it could’ve just been in an LE wave…
Just doesn’t have that SS86 look I’m used to and was hoping for.
But it’s still highly unlikely that I’d pass on him.

Well as I said before I don't think any of the past Bots need "improving upon", but Hasbro like to keep reissuing certain figures for new fans that come along. That said, SS86 doesn't need to continue for that to happen, they have either the main line or Buzzworthy for such reissues.

Definitely in the top five for me! Though I'd place Astrotrain above the other two because I already have Siege Shockwave which suits me fine, and the Netflix Soundwave will do if a better one doesn't happen. My vote goes to Buzzsaw for the pack in because I don't much care for Ratbat.

Keep in mind, the figures first released in SS86 were meant for Kingdom so they're technically not the usual SS figures. No licensed altmodes no extra kibble to make those altmodes look right. I don't think all the G1 characters from Kingdom were meant to be movie nods but obviously ones like Cyclonus and Galvatron fit.

I won’t open up the debate again about those figures like Cyclonus and Galvatron having different design approaches.
But with this new Brawn, the proportions seem off.
For me, the vast majority of SS86 figures have done a really solid job of encompassing the animated version of each character.
This Brawn just doesn’t hit that same mark for me.

Also, there is good and bad with every generation…
So it’s comical to me that there are probably a ton of younger people who want to throw around “Boomer” as an insult (I don’t think that name has any sort of positive connotation), and yet what have they done with their lives?
I would probably say Millennials and Gen Z’ers have just as many if not more issues than any generation before them.
And since I’ve worked with teens for the last 23 years, please believe there is a whole lot more I could say…
But to bring this back on topic,
I did see Core Ironhide at my local Target.
Although I have no intention of buying him, he’s a good-looking little figure.

I've read articles that define us as this in-between generation. We were the firs with cell phones and the last of rotary. We're the first to have affordable cable, and the last to remember TV stations going off air. You see where I'm going.
Is it possible that Brawn looks off because it's mistransformed?

I've read articles that define us as this in-between generation. We were the firs with cell phones and the last of rotary. We're the first to have affordable cable, and the last to remember TV stations going off air. You see where I'm going.
Is it possible that Brawn looks off because it's mistransformed?
Well, even if he is mis-transformed, I still say the issues are these:
Brawn as a character had proportions of an average kid--
He's short and has a large head relative to his torso and limbs.
The one aspect that appears like it could have been adjusted is the size of his helmet/head--
I'm guessing he's going to be about the same height as Huffer. Which works and is probably accurate.
So his stature is on point. But because his head is too small, it throws off his overall proportions and his torso and limbs are too long.
With this, the form of his chest/torso look a bit too square. It also looks a bit wide (probably again because his head should be larger).
I'm not sure why he has any yellow on his legs.
And then when you look at the character model, the contours of his upper feet or "ankles" are flush with his lower shins/lower legs. The contour is basically continuous from his feet to this legs. Relatively speaking, his upper feet/ankles have a form similar to a high top sneaker or a boot.
Whereas the design of this new figure doesn't show that at all once the ankle tilt joints are used.
The feet look very flat, and too flat compared to the animated character.
I'd also say the legs overall are too bulky.
Of course these leg/feet issues are most likely necessary for transformation, as well as allowing for those ankle tilts (or "rockers" as some call them).
Again, I am most likely going to get this figure, and I'm not saying he looks horrible.
If that was my opinion than I'd pass.
I'm so far past getting figures just "because" or just to have something new.
I get they're very different, but I think Hastak did a bang-up job with Beachcomber.
And the virtually 100% filled-out bot mode design is just a bit of icing.
Brawn just doesn't hit like that for me.

Just by way of update, now that Brawn has been revealed as SS86 22. Here are the missing numbers (as far as I can tell)
SS86 18
SS86 20
SS86 21
I have a separate list of regular SS numbers in that thread.

so Snarl is probably 18. Hound is one of the others. Prowl? Isn't he in a two-pack?

Wasn't it Hound that supposed to be in Buzzworthy, so why would he get an SS86 number? I mean if that's the case then I feel numbering it really rather pointless.
Also I don't recall reading about a prowl release, what version is that supposed to be?

The Cliffjumper repaint that was released under Buzzworthy Bumblebee had its own SS number, it was SS-8613, so Hound will most likely have its own number too.
A leaked product listing a while ago said that Prowl will be part of a 2-pack in Buzzworthy Bumblebee, based on his death scene in the movie. I'm guessing it will be two Prowls in the set, a standard one and a version with the orange smoke coming out of his eyes and mouth.

Snarl is already accounted for as 19.sol magnus wrote:so Snarl is probably 18.
I'm personally predicting Dead Prowl comes with Heroic Nonsense Ironhide, since according to leaker commentary the SS86 Ironhide mold has had battle damaged alternate parts since day 1.Munkky wrote:A leaked product listing a while ago said that Prowl will be part of a 2-pack in Buzzworthy Bumblebee, based on his death scene in the movie.
