Freebie - Guzzle from Brawl
Purchasable - Quake from Brawl with new head and Targetmasters

Boom. Decepticon Double Targetmasters out of the way and a second (or 3rd depending on the freebie for 2016) CW Wrecker.

Now for TFSS 5.0

Look at that! Decepticon Double Targetmasters, Triggercons, Sparkabots, and Lightformers! Four subgroups completed without a Botcon! Also there's now a total of 5 Wreckers plus some other guys.

I'm not surprised this did well. These are figures that are, and will be relatively new upon release. The other FSS waves used molds that were over 10 years old in some cases.

It's also focusing on characters that were actually toys that many had in their G1 toy collections.

Don't get me wrong, I like niche characters maybe moreso than many collectors, but there's nothing wrong with some proper G1 updates.

While these are still just hand painted prototypes of the figures, they do provide the best look we've had yet at the new head sculpts set to come to fans subscribed to FSS 4.0. While I have no love whatsoever for Thunderwing as a combined mode and not a separate character, they really have done a nice job with the individual robots and Impactor.

The more I see of these guys the more I like them. Sure the fact that the MAS combines together is out there, but I like it. Makes for a nice nod to the Wreckers doing the same in the FoC (sub)toyline in Generations.

One thing I'd really wish for the 2017 TFSS figures is more Autobots. Decepticons are cool and all, and Hasbro does put out more good guys in stores than bad guys, but there's gotta be a couple obscure Autobot characters - like what they did with Carzap this year - that the Club can put out in the TFSS eventually? Maybe?

Bludgeon's face seems to lack detail, but that's probably because the prototype paintwork is too heavy. The glare on the glass isn't helping, either.

It does in fact look like he's missing a wheel lol and the face does look a bit off but that's due to what you mentioned as well as it being a low res mockup to begin with.

Disappointed about the size class of Impactor; hopefully the deco and concept work somewhat makes up for it.

The fan club dude kept specifying the heads were low res 3D prints, and not as detailed as the final product. Also I think he said those 2 in the cabinet were painted up quickly to show them off.

So FSS 4.0's first shipment, probably coming up soon I'd expect? Or will it be held until after Botcon? I'm personally not bothered either way, just curious.

I can't really say (ie I don't personally know).

All I can suggest is looking at previous years for precedence, in so far as the relation of the start of the FSS and when BotCon takes place.

i had already emailed funpub to make sure i didn't miss the second installment payment and as part of the answer they said there isn't a definite date for arrival of the first shipment but they hoped within the next couple of months

Second payment is NEVER before the first toy has at least arrived.

Seems like there was an announcement last week or so, saying that it would be in April (which, realistically, would probably mean after BotCon).

A more precise estimate will no doubt be made as that draws nearer.

Also-- I assume since these figures come bagged separately, there will be no special release (i.e. Giftbox packaging? )

Pretty much, yes. The Subscription period ended quite a few months ago. Expect a subscription period for TFSS 5.0 to begin in a month or so (but you do have to already be a member of TCC to do that. The period to sign up for that ended a couple of weeks ago, after a pretty massive publicity campaign).

As it has always been for club subscription services, yes. The only time a special box for a set is created is when all toys are sold (and shipped) together, and not always even then.
