I'm curious as to whether it fits into any previous G1 incarnation or is totally new. Would love if it tied in with the marvel G1 and g2 comics.

War Journal features more than just the 4 characters pictured here... some of them may be the other Protectobots... or not...

It's connected to IDW's universe. Sort of.

We tried really hard to keep in in continuity, but it was a bit tricky not knowing what IDW had planned.

I'd say just write what you need to for the story and not let what IDW does worry or bother you. Most people are concerned just with the characters and more familiar with the shows, I'd wager. Certainly I'm still catching up on the *old* TF comics, let alone the new ones.
