6.Godzilla vs. Mothra: The Battle for Earth

That one ranks somewhere on my favorites list too. I think it's cause of Battra, who is a legitimate contender for Godzilla. That guy was able to hold his own against Godzilla in his Larva form. Plus I like the idea of the Yin/Yang Guardians of the Earth.

I'm also reminded of a bit of trivia: wasn't Godzilla and Mothra: BFE actually made because Toho wanted to make a new King Kong vs. Godzilla, but couldn't get the rights? Man, I hope they make a rematch for the new series. Wounldn't it be awsome if that's what they're planning for Godzilla 2012? It is the 50th Anniversery of Godzilla vs. King Kong after all...

Oh, and what's the opinion of the Rebirth of Mothra Trilogy? I think they're pretty fun movies, even if they do target a younger audiance.

Anyone seen the Gamera movies?

Which ones? Original, 90's, or Brave? For me personally:

I've seen a handful of the originals: Original, Gyoas, Barugon, Zigra, and Guiron. It's been awhile since I saw them, and since they're coming out on DVD I'm actually waiting to see if Shout Factory will just box set them all up for a cheaper, easier pick up. It paid off with Classic Media and Godzilla. By the way, that set is just plain awsome. Wonderful special features, mostly good commentary(Monster Zero's kinda boring), and hey, original and American movies.

But back to origianl Gamera. Gamera himself is a pretty cool guy, cause he's a turtle. Breathing real fire is something Godzilla only did in vs. King Kong, and his ability to fly puts him another notch up there in the memorable category. However, his movies are definitely cheaper and chinzier, and from what I remember the plots probably don't hold up as well. However, the monster fights were pretty fun. It's been too long and I've seen them too few times to really comment further though.

For the 90's, I've only ever seen the first one. I'd really like to see the other two, but they're pretty rare to come by. Guardian of the Universe is pretty good though, and I can see why it was so well recieved. Didn't it come out after Godzilla vs. Destroyah though? That probably helped. One thing that bugged me though is that Gyoas's eyes are just a little too googley looking.

Finally, still haven't gotten Gamera the Brave.

Showa Gamera is a ridiculous fun-fest which is so bad, it's good. They got creative too, with the likes of Barugon, Guiron, and Space Gyaos.


Hesei is where it really picks up. GGU was great, but Legion and Irys are the best Kaiju movies, ever. They are the bloodiest, edgiest, grittiest, action-packed, outrageos, destructive, high-brow, well plotted, and extreme Kaiju flicks of all time. you gotta check em out.

Brave was okay, but wasn't great. i don't recommend it. But watch Legion and Irys.

Found something interesting at Wal-Mart last night...

The complete series of Original Ultraman for $9!! Since Ultraman has loose connections with Godzilla, I knew I had to get it.

So far I've only seen the first episode, and the video quality seems ok. However, something strange occurred. There was a scene where the dialogue suddenly switched to subtitled Japanese(I was watching it in English). I rewound a bit, and tried changing things around...nothin. So I assume that part of the episode was never dubbed, which means the episodes on the disc are probably uncut and complete.

Obviously I'll have to watch more episodes to see if it happens again, but if it does, I'm very pleased with the company, Millcreek Entertainment. I have another DVD set by them, "Giant Monster Movies", that has a few Gamera Movies and 50's B Movies. Some of those films were cropped, and the video quality varied considerably. They also only had one language track, and no special features.

Ultraman has two language tracks, and lists a couple of special features(an interview, and a Kaiju Encyclopedia). So this could end up being a very good set. One thing that is odd though is the packaging. Each disc is packed into a single CD sleave and stacked into a deep square groove inside the case. I'll take a pic if anyone wants me too. While this packaging may not be bad(indeed, it's better than recent seasons of Simpsons), I've never seen the like before.

Hey guys, last week I posted a thread on another board where I counted down "Godzilla's Deadliest Foes", and sadly I have had no responses.

Anyway, would anyone like me to post it here? I really have no idea if it's a good list or not, but I did put some effort into it.

If I did post it here, would you prefer I post it in parts(there's 30 foes on the list), or all at once?

Nearly everyone he's fought is on the list!! Since there's at least one vote here, I'll start with the first five, and start counting down from there.

However, I do have a few ground rules before I begin:

-I’m separating monsters by continuities, so that’s why you’ll see four Mothra’s on this list, and so on and so forth. Speaking of which, I’m grouping Mothra larva and adult forms together, since Mothra’s kids finished the mother’s fight and are sometimes the same character.

-For anyone who’s wondering, Showa=60’s/ 70’s characters, and Heisei=90’s Godzilla characters.

-I’m not including ANY monsters from Godzilla: Final Wars. Before anyone cries fowl(Aflac!), let me clarify a few things:

a. The tone and style of Final Wars is so different from what’s come before that’s it’s hard to compare and contrast the monster’s strengths, mostly because the battles are so short.

b. Even if I were to rank these guys, most of them would wind up near the bottom and well below their original incarnations. Yes, even Gigan. His redesign is great, but Godzilla blew his head off in two shakes of a dog’s tail.

c. Truth be told, Keiser Ghidorah may have ended up somewhere in the middle, but since he’s not much different from the other King Ghidorah’s on the list, his presence won’t be missed.

-Monster rankings are based on their fights against Godzilla only. I don’t care how good they did against Anguirus or Godzilla Jr., if they can’t hold a candle to the Big G himself, then how powerful are they? Plus, it does make ranking them easier.

-Military vehicles like tanks, planes and maser cannons will not be on the list. Impressive as the JSDF is, most of the time their attacks were ineffective. Furthermore super vehicles like the Super-X trilogy aren’t on the list either. At the end of the day they never had a chance at beating Godzilla and were mostly stopgaps.

-A film’s quality does not affect a monster’s ranking. A good film may not feature a high ranking monster, and vice versa.

-Even though it should go without saying, I’m only counting battles/monsters that took place in the films. Comic, cartoon, and book battles/monsters will not be considered. Godzilla’s Zone fighter appearances are also moot, cause I’ve never seen them.

-Finally, let it be known that this list is based on my opinion, and is entirely biased. However, I gave every monster on this list a fair shake, and a few of them ended up higher than I thought they would. If you have an opinion that differs from my own, not only would I welcome it, I encourage it! Discussing monsters is always fun.

GODZILLA’S DEADLIEST FOES


30. Giant Condor: If I had to choose one big lipped alligator moment from Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, I think the Giant Condor would be it. As we all know, this guy comes from nowhere and starts pecking and scratching at Godzilla. No explanation, and he’s never heard from again(except in Godzilla’s Revenge). Anyway, he gets points for tenacity, but since it’ll take longer to read this passage than it would to watch the fight, I think you know why he’s bottom of the barrel.

29. Kamacurus: Because they actually gave Godzilla some trouble and showed some hand eye coordination with rocks, they edge their way into the #29 spot. Barely. Godzilla handled these guys like rag dolls, and annihilated them with his atomic breath. Let’s also not forget their horrible aim when lunging.

28. Gabara: Ya know, I think I know why Gabs kept picking on Minya. It’s because he’s a wimp! He gets points for at least knowing some battle strategy, attack low and start biting, but he’s significantly weaker than Godzilla, and his electricity jazz hands were probably about as painful as a tickle. It should also be noted that the loser ran away. Still a live chicken is better than a dead turkey….

27. Baragon: The first of the guardian spirits from GMK, Baragon started the battle out right. He made a pit to trap Godzilla and bit onto Godzilla’s arm for dear life. Barry also never gave up, and kept attacking. However, even the humans knew Baragon was outmatched, and it wasn’t long before Godzilla fried him.

26. Mothra(Heisei): Flying in from 1992’s ‘Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth”, we have our first Mothra entry. All in all, not that bad. In her larva form she showed some intelligence by using cover and attacking at the right time. But she was way outmatched, no question, and ran as soon as she could. After a short metamorphosis, her abilities definitely increased. Laser antennae and dust that can neutralize Godzilla’s breath, how can anyone go wrong? Well, it’s mostly because this incarnation was more of a support player, and didn’t seem all that aggressive, instead relying on teamwork to defeat Godzilla.

Well there's a taste of the list. Woud you like the rest all in one go, or daily doses? Since I really don't want to be drag it out, it'd be five a day.

Ah ok. That would explain something. So's anyway, here's the next 5!

25. Ebirah: If Ebirah can’t find any secret evil organizations to work for, then he could probably make it as a juggler, once his claws grew back that is. Anyway, Ebirah certainly couldn’t pass mustered when it came to Godzilla’s atomic breath, and was definitely weaker physically. So why isn’t he down further? Well this guy showed some pretty good tactics. He made Godzilla come to him, and kept pulling ol’ G under, which I’m sure caused some disorientation. But at the end of the day Godzilla prevailed, and Ebirah surprisingly made it out alive.

24. Titanasaurus: Eesh, this guy was pretty hard to rank. Not because he was a wimp, no siree bob! It was mainly because Godzilla didn’t really fight him much, the humans kept him at bay. However, we did get to see him strut his stuff somewhat, and it was enough to go on. For example, his kicks sent Godzilla flying across the landscape, and his tail whips produced enough wind to keep Godzilla back. Titanasaurus also showed some spunk close range. Of course even the aliens knew Titanasaurus would be killed, and the guy was a bit of a push-over, and couldn’t take Godzilla’s atomic breath.

23. Mothra(Tokyo S.O.S.): If your wondering why this incarnation of Mothra falls so low on the list, it’s not because of her adult form. No way! She showed intelligence and strength against G, and it’s implied kept him at bay all day. But really, that’s all she did, keep him busy awhile, and her attacks didn’t appear to hurt G at all. Now what was I…oh yeah, the lower ranking. Her stupid kids. Man are they dumb. Don’t move to cover, can’t hit that tail, and their silk was not very effective. It was only able to cover G after he was beaten. Meh.

22 King Ghidorah(GMK): Now before anyone cries fowl again(CAW!!), remember this is the GMK version. This guy wasn’t very strong. Oh his lighting hurt Godzilla, and he seemed smart enough not to take Godzilla on toe to toe after awhile, but the guy couldn’t take a blast of atomic breath, and even being revived/powered up twice didn’t seem to help, he still lost!

21. Rodan(Heisei): Next on our list is Rodan from the film “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II”, and this guy’s a fighter. He knew to go for Godzilla’s eyes, and his agility combined with razor sharp wings provided some excellent knock downs. However, his endurance was pretty low, and like many guys on this list, was no match for Godzilla’s atomic breath.

Fire Rodan never actually fought Godzilla, only his pre-powered up form, hence his placement on the list. I do make a mention of that later though.

As for Hedorah, you'll have to see .

But hey, here's the next part of the list!

20. Gigan(Showa): Put your eyes down, and tongue back in your mouth, Gigan isn’t an impressive fighter. To put it bluntly, he’s an opportunistic coward. Yeah his claws can penetrate Godzilla’s skin, and he seemed pretty agile, but he only stuck his neck out when Godzilla was already shaken. Plus he’s a dirty fighter, attacking from behind or using a hostage. Ok he can fly, big whoop, one blast of atomic breath and he’s grounded. Being physically weaker than Godzilla and cutting and running when his pals are losing adds insult to injury.

19. Mothra(GMK): The final Guardian Monster makes her debut on this list. Of all the Mothra incarnation’s, this girl takes no crap, and seemed quite aggressive. In addition to the expected agility, she’s got offensive spines that hurt Gojira, and defensively it’s shown she can take a blast of atomic blast with the best of them. Heck, even dying she can power up fallen monsters, and even create a flame proof energy shield. All in all, pretty impressive.

18. Biolante: Yeah, she ended up a lot lower than I thought. Her main form of attack was a seemingly inexhaustible supply of vines that could not only strangle Godzilla but also spit blinding acid. They were also sharp enough to penetrated Godzilla’s skin. So why the low ranking? Mostly because of her susceptibleness to Godzilla’s atomic breath. Every attack blew her up a little, and her vines faired no better. But wait, didn’t she spit some kind of gunk that made Godzilla go down for the count, injuring him for at least two years? Eh, I think it was the bacteria in his system that finally got the better of him, and the spit was just coincidence. Final verdict is she’s decent, but is not the same creature as Godzilla, no matter what some scientist says.

17. Megalon: A giant cockroach with drill hands that shoots grenades, what a concept! Oh, you didn’t put a brain in there? Eh, who needs one! So why is this lunk-head so high? Mostly because he’s a tank, and is near Godzilla‘s strength level. His grenades proved to be good at keeping Godzilla at bay, and hey he drill underground and come up behind. Plus he seemed a lot more aggressive than his partner in slime Gigan. However, as I said, the guy’s dumb, and wasn’t very tactically sound(shooting a grenade back into your mouth is a perfect example). When all was said and done, Godzilla was able to overpower him and win the day.

16. Kumonga: A giant spider. Not the most creative of enemies. So why is he here? Despite flipping over when hit by a rock and having burnable web, he’s pretty tough. That web I mentioned is capable of incapacitating Godzilla in a matter of seconds, and the guy not only knows how to play dead and get a cheap hit in, but he also knows how to use gravity to his advantage and crush Godzilla with his own body weight. Let’s add being able to withstand Godzilla’s atomic breath to the list…to a certain point. In da final analysis, that was his undoing, not having the endurance to finish the battle.

15. King Ghidorah(Heisei): In the middle spot we have King Ghidorah from the Heisei era. This iteration has high physical strength, flight capability, and can take a few hits from Godzilla’s breath. He not only had Goji-man on the ropes, but can even function without a head. So why the lowish ranking? It’s all because his combat effectiveness is almost entirely dependent on an outside force controlling his actions. Once that link is severed, poof, he’s practically a pushover. His wings are also a major weak spot. But what about his upgrade to Mecha King Ghidorah? Honestly, his combat effectiveness seemed about the same, and they never did fix those fragile wings. But he won, didn’t he? Yes, but no, because Mecha GH’s grapplers could barely contain Goji-man, and he did have to be sacrificed to deter Godzilla for another year.


14. Mechagodzilla II(Heisei): Built from the remains of Mecha King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla was a pretty impressive piece of machinery. Despite the size, it was surprisingly mobile, and the Garuda upgrade pushed the machine to the next level. Add in an impressive arsenal of weapons and you have one deadly mech. So why is he the lowest of all the Mecha G’s? Hardware questionability. It lost it’s first encounter because of feedback from one of it’s own weapon, and nearly overheated when firing a mouth beam. Plus, despite the large arsenal, only the plasma grenades proved to be a real threat, and it’s armor plating was capable of being worn down over the course of a battle. Let’s also not forget being completely ineffectual at close range combat. But wait, didn’t this machine nearly kill Godzilla? Yeah, that’s a bit of a tough call. The only reason it was able to do so was because of an exploitable weakness, and if they didn’t know about that second brain they wouldn’t have won. Add in Rodan’s sacrifice to regenerate Godzilla’s second brain and melt Mecha G’s armor plating, and I think both factors cancel each other out.

13. Mechagodzilla(Showa): Godzilla’s final foe during the Showa era. Like his Heisei brethren, he also possesses an impressive arsenal, and when everything goes off at once it’s almost like an explosive rainbow. Unlike his Heisei brethren, his ammunition seemed practically unlimited, and nearly everything was effective against Godzilla. His armor plating proved to be more than a match for Godzilla’s atomic breath, and don’t forget his force field. He also had good aim, and nearly always went for Godzilla’s jugular. So what’s the catch at being #13? Well, he had no close range weaponry, and couldn’t even struggle out of Godzilla’s grasp. But the real coup de disgrace was that head of his. I think I’ve had a harder time opening a bottle of coke that Godzilla did twisting it off. Oh MG got a rematch, and the aliens technically corrected their first mistake by adding an inner head, but it wasn’t a very tough nut to crack, and Godzilla was able to defeat him by bulling his way through MG’s barrage, then throwing him into a mountain.

12. Anguirus: Oh yeah, I dare put Angy above Mechagodzilla. While I may be a little biased(Angurius is one of my favorite kaiju), he proved a very worthy first opponent for the G-man. The first thing that impresses is his overall tenacity, because this guy was fighting for his life. But the law of the jungle states kill or be killed right? Same deal applies here, as Angurius constantly went for the jugular during his battle with the G-man. In addition to being able to withstand a blast of atomic breath, Angurius is at least as strong as G-man, being able to at least hold him in place during their shoving matches. However, when the dust settled on the ruined Osaka, the G-man proved to be the victor without question.

11. Battra: Batter-I-ah, Battera. Please don’t destroy us, Battera. We’re sorr-y we polluted the planet. Oh….oh, Battra didn’t have a song did he? Probably why I think he’s so awesome. But this isn’t about his character, it’s about his combat prowess, and his larval form was very impressive. Not only did he have beam attacks, but his horn makes for a good offensive weapon in close quarters, and he can take Godzilla’s atomic breath in stride. So, why’s he not in the top 10? Mostly because his moth form downgrades his defensive capabilities so much. What he gains in agility and strength he loses in armor, and in an extended battle with Godzilla endurance is one of the many keys to victory. Still, despite this he showed some intelligent tactics, and is one of the few monsters to actually use the environment to his advantage. Combined with Mothra, his attacks were able to paralyze the King of Monsters and send him to a watery prison…while getting killed in the process. Dang.

Godzilla is my fav. no doubt about it. Even got a somewhat subtle Godzilla tattoo. On the left hand in the space between index and thumb, has his name in japanese and in english right underneath it. Not bad for my first tattoo course wife still thinks I shoulda got her name first......ah well. Anyhow I for one am excited as all hell for the 2012 Godzilla reboot. Even the kids are fans of Godzilla, oddly enough my daughter more than my son. Right now her fav. movie is "Gidorah the three headed monster" japanese edition. I still have my first Godzilla figure from the old '85 movie, its the mid size vers. from Imperial.
