To me it's always been obvious. Examples are early outings from an Australian group called The Whitlams. Their first hit song was depressing. Yet a few albums later after much success the songs were more upbeat and happy.
Linkin Park is another example, their early stuff was clearly disgruntled. Now they're just grown up Beibers.

I was in the car listening to his song from 1982's movie Cat People and the Breakfast Club.
It's about the only song i like from him.
Don't you, forget about me.

You "got into" David Bowie but you only like one song? Last I checked if you were "into" something you really liked them.

Love No Aphrodisiac. Hard to believe it was 15 years ago
On the subject of musical change. How much of that do you think is personal development, attempting a demographic crossover, direction from the music company etc? Then There are bands that have been doing the same thing for a long time with continued success.

Demographic crossover - Best example would be Madonna. She's tried to change with the times to remain "fresh". What she fails to realise though is she's a wrinkly old woman trying to hold on to her glory days and not be surpassed by the likes of Lady Gaga.
Speaking of ... Gaga is a mystery. Some would say she's manufactured, I just think she's a marketing genius.
Personal development - I think there's a lot out there. Take Bon Jovi for example, their early stuff was bright, energetic, new stuff, while it's very much Bon Jovi, you can feel it's older, wiser, and a little more grown up.
Ones that have stayed the same - Best example, AC/DC. Never changed, never will. Still big.

Hell, Australia has an entire digital radio station dedicated to unsigned artists. (Yes, some of them need their computer enhancements unfortunately)

When I go to the gym I have to turn my iPod up most times to drown out some of the rap/heavy bass dance stuff the muscle heads have playing through the system.
