TOP 10 GENERATIONS FIGURES
TOP 10 GENERATIONS FIGURES
Posted by CombaticonsCombine? Tue Mar 31, 2015 7:10 pm
Hello, everybody.
So, I was reading the top 5 tanks list, and I realized that there were a LOT of amazing Generations toys. As such, I came up with something a bit similar.
How this works is simple. You choose 10 toys from the Generations line, including COMBINER WARS. List them in order from least favorite to most favorite. List your reasons for liking each figure. And don't shirk! The longer the post, the better.
I would be starting off but I only own 8 figures, and only three of them are Generations.
So, what were YOUR favorites?

Nope. Generations ONLY, starting with WFC/FOC figures.

This thread about best designs is what I used for knowing where to start collecting (you'll see a lot of posts from me as the thread evolves): what-is-the-best-transformers-toy-in-terms-of-design-t74106s10.php
And this thread simply asks for the best Generations figures. It's from last year so everything is in it aside from combiner wars: favourite-generations-figures-t101782.php

Asking me to exclude Classics and Universe is like asking me to abandon some of my children.
Maybe I could come up with a top 10. (Sorry, other kids!) But it would have to be a "Top 10 Classics Style" (encompassing Classics, Universe, and G1-inspired Generations). And since that would be against your criteria...

Wouldn't be prudent.
In my mind, the current Generations toy line is but an extension of what came before in Universe 2.0 and, before that, Classics. I just can't separate them.

I totally agree. And plus, its not like they are rereleasing those classic characters once again in the generations line, like Prowl, Ironhide, Bumblebee, Powerglide, Cyclonus, Rodimus, the seekers, Megatron, Optimus, Silverbolt, Ultra Magnus ... oh wait...

Firstly, you are being agreed with.
The rest of the sentence comes from what I was initially going to write which was: It<s not like they are remaking all the guys from classics again and the first few I listed were all getting remade (Cyclonus, Rodimus, Prowl and Ironhide). So I thought it would be a bit comedic. Nothing aimed at you. The classics do have figures we have yet to see again hence why I would always count as part of generations and not outside of it (like Wreck Gar, Ratchet, and Hound), but the more time passes, the more many of those seem dated and not that great. Everyone is yearning for a new Ironhide/ratchet and a new Voyager sized Galvatron and Astrotrain, and no-one talks about that cheetor.
It would actually be very interesting to ask you to make a list of the best (no need to limit it to a number) figures from CHUG and see how many are not generations. So best non generations classics toys. Aside from Megatron (nerf gun), Optimus, Grappel, Lugnut, Deepdive, Cyclonus and Strafe, I cant think of too many.

I say they do. Generations is plural, not tied to a single generation.

2. CW Devastator - Its not everyday we see an official Devy that gives nod to its G1 incarnation.
3. CW Defensor - Cool update and better proportion.
4. CW Superion - Its aerialbots period.
5. FOC Metroplex - The biggest autobot ever.
6. WFC Optimus Prime - Toy engineering of a voyager class in a deluxe size.
7. FOC Grimlock - Almost game accurate.
8. Arcee - Sexy
9. Swerve - You have to read the MTMTE comics
10. Cosmos - Even the third party can't beat the official version.

No worries. If any mocking had been involved, I had interpreted it as a playful sort, so no offence was at any time inferred.

Well, I don't know if I can get to it in until after this weekend, as I shall be pretty busy until then with both Passover and Easter to contend with. But perhaps I shall try to make a list in the near future.
Of course, such a list will have to be the start of a new thread, a "Top 'Classics' Style Figures" thread. (I suppose for convenience, I could use that "CHUG" term, even though I hate it.)
Also, kind of a sucky time to make such a list, as there are some great looking figures on the horizon and (unlike some here, who I already see putting Devastator or Defensor in their lists) I won't rank a figure I don't have personal experience with...
Maybe I could wait until after the summer, when I'll at least have been able to get my hands on Superion and Defensor? It would be nice to be able to see if I would like to include those two and/or any of their component members.
Of course, there will be some obvious potential gaps, as I would limit such a list to official figures. But in some cases (such as for Devastator or Menasor) I feel I shall be content to stay with the third party option I already have.* Thus, those would be unable to appear on my list.
Also, while I exclude complete figures from third parties, some of my official figures do have their potential ranking enhanced by third party additions or modifications. Do I rank them based on how I have them now, or based on how I remember feeling about the base figure? A conundrum.
But yes... I suppose such a list from me may someday be possible...
* I may be against third parties covering figures already done by Hasbro, but if a third party version has been acquired into my collection before the official one has been announced, and if the official one doesn't feel as if it will "wow" me, I don't feel compelled to replace what I already have.

You may have misread me, I was thinking of ignoring the generations line alltogether. Because so many of the character that got classics figures are being remade, I was asking you which of the classics, universe and RTS line you thought were really good. No need to make a list, just off the top of your head. I don't think that many are perfect. Onslaught, Cyclonus Sunstreaker/Sideswipe are probably the best of the Universe line, for instance and the ones remade for generations so far are a pale comparison.
The point is your initial statement about all of these being part of the same Classics, and thus not being able to make a top 10 on JUST the Generations line got me thinking, What is the best that came before it? That's all.
I actually think the generations line itself is all over the place. The movie toys are now part of it and so are the g1 reissues coming out this year.
It reminds me a lot of the Transformers Line from 2010 which contained everything from movie figures to Unicron and G1 Piranacon.

It doesnt have to be a formal list but I am really curious as to which figures you foresee remainging on your classics shelf from the lines prior to generations, that you dont foresee being replaced. Either due to the character not being released again (ie Wreck Garr) or because the generations figure is inferior (ie Onslaught or the upcoming Rodimus)

Nope, too late. I'm already thinking of a formal list. When I can I shall write it up and probably throw it into a new thread. (Hopefully I can find time tonight. Otherwise, between Passover and Easter, it will likely have to wait until after the weekend.)
