TRANSFORMERS MOSAIC: "Reason"

Postby WhiteRabbit » Wed Nov 28, 2007 12:38 am

The Universe of the Transformers is vast, and populated by many characters. Their universe is a large tapestry, made up of the stories and points of view of countless experiences that serve the larger whole.

These are some of those stories. This is:
Image

It should be noted that while this project has been recognized by IDW Publishing and Hasbro, none of the works presented have been commissioned or solicited by either company. The stories are not official canon, except where noted.
These stories are the result of Transformers enthusiasts taking the time out of their busy days to contribute to a universe they love.
No one has been paid for the production of these stories.

Today we present "Reason", written by Josh van Reyk (aka Richter), Art by Shaun Knowler (aka White Rabbit), with colors by Kris Carter (aka Drivaaar) and edits by Mary Canada (aka DoubleTake) and JJ Price (aka Ford Deceptifocus).

YAY!!!!
So happy to see this piece released. This is the first Mosaic I ever wrote and is still one of my very favourite pieces.

And ofcourse, any chance to work with Shaun and Kris is always win!

cool!

at first i thought "hey, this ISN'T right...Beachcomber was supposed to be the pacifist, right? i mean, he was a ROBOT HIPPIE if there ever was one...so why did he give reasons for fighting?"

but reading further reveals his penultimate reason: so that he won't ever have to fight again.

amazing stuff. you guys sure know your G1 references, and write good stories out of it. keep it up.

Seems like this piece took forever to come out, cause I remember seeing rough pencils of it when I first found out about Mosaic. But anyway...

A very good piece. I like the art style, it's not as realistic as the major stuff, but it's very detailed and pleasing to the eye. The colors are very good too. I like the story too, really makes me remember that Beachcomer is a reluctant soldier, but also an Autobot through and through.

So, topnotch ;)^ .

Another great Mosaic piece. I really do hope that we can somehow get these all into a collected works book.

Aww! Beachcomber's one of my fave Autobots, and this is both sweet, touching, and thought-provoking. I think it perfectly sums up his attitudes towards the war in general.

And I like the art as well, the way it illustrates all of his points. I have to admit that while realistic art is very cool, I'm more a fan of less-realistic/"cartoony" art, as it has more character to me. (So it always makes me kinda sad when people gripe about the less-realistic art styles. :( )

Thanks for th kind words everyone, I'm glad this piece is able to show that there's more to Beachcomber than what we've seen it the cartoon and comics as of late.

As much as I like the concept of Transformers: Mosaic, can the stories be less "Emo-formers"? There's definitely a way to expand upon a character's backstory without having to make it sentimental, etc.

If I could, I wanted to comment on one of your comments on the IDW boards (must find time and money to catch up on TF comics so I can post over there one of these days...) and say that I can empathize with finding yourself writing a Mosaic for a character you used to never care about (and then liking them afterwards, in my case).

It's actually been finished since the summer, but there's a sense of timing in play with its release...

really makes me remember that Beachcomer is a reluctant soldier, but also an Autobot through and through.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. :) That's exactly what we were out to get across with this.

These characters are fighting an endless war. Whatever their reasons for doing so, a LOT of them are going to develop a lot of sad memories and anguish, and that makes up a great deal of their character. It's called being alive.

That being said, there are some pieces in the mix that have some action, comedy and intrigue. The rest of the "being alive" deal. ;)

I don't like the idea:

"
I fight because it's the only thing that will end the war"
"

War as the only solution to war itself leads to eternal fighting. I won't say that it's a very American idea, because the world is full of people that see things like that, but for me one thing is to say that giant robots are fighting giant robots, another one is to give their fighting some realistic, moral side. It's war between toys. Let's leave moral out of Megatron and Optimus' struggle.
My 2 cents.

There should be one more panel that has Warpath saying "Well, I ZOW fight because I have a BLAM gun in my chest!"
"A polar bear is dropkicked by a robot that turns into a police car."

Very nice work. I'm a big fan of the '85 Minibots, for their personalities, and this is a perfect tribute to Beachcomber.

This is a great mosaic (but aren't they all?)
Great to see Beachcomber getting some love. He's definitely one of my favourite characters. And you guys definitely pulled off the whole reluctant but noble soldier character extremely well.
