Hotspot
Pyra Magma
Onslaught
G2 Onslaught
Bludgeon
Mega Empress
Mega-Octane
Ok, not 10 as I thought, but already 7. In only 2 years. Enough to become boring.
It's unfair to count Mega Empress, G2 Onslaught, Bludgeon, and, arguably, Mega-Octane.
Mega Empress is the Takara counterpart of Pyra Magna, they weren't released in the same market. If you're going to count both of those you should count the Hasbro and Takara versions of Hot Spot separately.
G2 Onslaught is
supposed to be a redeco of Onslaught, you're not going to get a version of him that isn't and you're not missing something by getting him. Mega-Octane is the same, and is arguably the Takara counterpart to G2 Onslaught as well.
Bludgeon is a TFSS toy.
Yeah, we really should stay away from grouping them all together like that when discussing whether or not this mold is overused because it will lead to nonsensical discussion. Its totally fair to say that this mold was used for several characters, but they are not all from the same company (there are 3 different companies there and 2 isolated markets that are not allowed to compete with eachother contractually while the other can ONLY do repaints by contract). So right there, it cant really be used as an argument to say 1 company is lazy. If we want to talk about a mold being overused, or basically Hasbro being lazy, lets just stick to Hasbro releases.
Basically, this mold was used for HotSpot and retooled to quite an extent for Onslought. And the redecos of Onslought HAD to be a straight redecos as per the homages at play. Thats like complaining that a starscream mold is overused because its also used for Thundercracker and Slywarp. Like what else would one want/expect?
Victorion was always going to be a retool and its one the fans picked. One could call that lazy, but the fan poll is a microcosm of Combiner Wars as a whole and its basically calling the entire line lazy, not just the particular use of that particular mold.
This inferno is really the very first use of the mold, to me, which does start to make it look overused. Its the only use of the mold so far which feels like filler material and there only to have something else on the shelves with not much merrit or reason behind it. I will skip it and will instead get the classics inferno one day, so that my GHUG HotSpot and Inferno will be different molds.
So I do agree with D-Max. But, I will reiterate, I only find this use of the mold to be unnecessary.
