Y'know, it might help if we started referring to what most people call 'G1' as 'G1 Cartoon/Marvel Comic'. Kinda helps clear up some confusion and stop people from coming back with "yeah but IDW".
IDW is G1 btw but like, when we say G1 we're referring to a specific era

That Hasbro quote is very disingenuous. I mean they say they're making "new products without being chained to old stories" and then turn around and give us Platinum sets based off the animated movie and VERY G1 true takes on several old characters.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm here because I love the old 80's cartoon. So I am totally down for 10 new takes on 80s Hot Rod. But just making Hot rod a Headmaster isn't making him "not G1." That quote seems to relate more to RID than Combiner or titan Wars.
I dont mind either, I am having good fun with you guys
That last bit is interesting. I do see what you mean since he is still G1 flavoured using a g1 gimmick so he's not necessarily an evolution in the aesthetic or character but more of a fun switcheroo. Still, he isn't G1 hot rod either right? So he's not G1 hot rod, but at the same time he isnt that different from G1 either, is that what you mean? Like it should be a go big or go home type thing?
Personally I think we all know whats really going on here. Hasbro is just trying to reassure fans with these quotes that dont really hold up or mean anything aside from letting you know that they do care (or else they simply wouldnt be there to answer). They just want to let you know that there is a reason for all this that is more than simply them capitalizing on a line wide gimmick and pairing it with known names and designs that fans and parents might recognize. But there isnt.
Do I still sound positive
Still pretty positive, lol.
Well ... lemme put it like this.
There's proper G1 which goes up to and includes G2 (as G2 is just an extension of G1). So, the proper era of G1 has ended, this is true.
But G1 itself was revived with the original reissue line. We had new characters like Sunstorm and Road Rage. I guess, if you wanted to be technical, you could call it Neo G1 and draw a hard line here. BUT it's all still connected to the G1 base. So Alpha Broavo, Headmaster Hot Rod, Combiner Wars Optimus Prime - all these are things I consider to be Neo G1 because they all spring from G1. As long as Hasbro and Takara continue to use G1 as a VERY strong base in their story it's a baldface lie for them to say they aren't following old stories.
What is NOT G1? Beast Wars (although there's overlap). The Bayverse. Prime / RID. Takes that deviate pretty strongly from the original cartoons, ESPECIALLY visually. But even here we can see there's some G1, so it's something of a spectrum. For instance - Armada Unicron and Superlink Galvatron G found a place in my collection before being replaced by better toys. Armada Blurr not no much.
IDW is still G1 (or Neo G1 is we want to be technical) because it grows from G1. It's like how Victory is G1. New ideas and new characters, but still springing forth from G1.

But even then, it's still only a loose homage to the movie since, while the decos may be movie-inspired (plus shiny), most of the molds themselves are newer designs. Ultra Magnus and Springer in that Platinum set are literally wearing Sunbow/Toei decos on IDW robot mode bodies.Gauntlet101010 wrote:That Hasbro quote is very disingenuous. And the Platinum deco for Arcee is still less show-accurate than that of the Takara Legends Arcee.

So sets directly referencing the G1 movie with moulds based on the G1 designs aren't solidly G1 to you and that Hasbro is being 100% sincere that they aren't being chained to old stories?
Well ... agree to disagree I guess.

Oh, they're still G1 designs, just different ones than those from the cartoon and movie (I forgot to also mention Blurr's IDW G1-based mold).Gauntlet101010 wrote:Sabrblade wrote:But even then, it's still only a loose homage to the movie since, while the decos may be movie-inspired (plus shiny), most of the molds themselves are newer designs. But it's their being different ones that hurts the movie homage since, even though they are still some kind of G1 designs, they're technically the wrong ones for the homage, and yet remain the best/only options Hasbro has since there aren't any other/any better options for Hasbro to use to implement the homage.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing ...
Maybe it's time to talk about Headmaster Hot Rod again.

Yet this same anniversary year, Hasbro is releasing a new Blurr mold which looks a lot more like the character model we first saw in the film and yet they arent giving it a deco to represent the film, leaving that to Takara. So this same anniversary year we are getting from Hasbro a Blurr with the wrong alt mode but a deco closer to the film than the original release of that mold AND another Blurr which has a closer alt mode to the movie but who's deco is not even close. Odd times guys.

Well, it's kinda inevitable. They're Head-...er, TITAN-Masters. Not really much you can do with 'em.

I just wish they wouldnt all come with redecos of the same titan master vehicles and animals we already have. Kind of defeats the purpose for me of buying a retool if it still comes with a redeco.

They are switching out Titan Master molds between figures though, meaning any head mold isn't necessarily tied to a specific body mold. The Stylor mold, for instance, is used for both Chromedome and Blurr, despite the main bodies not being retools (they do share some minor parts).

I really hope there will be either a separate voyager Rodimus Prime, or maybe even a set that has a trailer with this Hot Rod, that combines with him to make him a voyager sized Rodimus Prime.

Can you imagine if, like... they released just a trailer that was deluxe or voyager? And so it's an actual character to justify release, they gave it a titan master - who transforms into a more mature Rodimus head to complete a fully-matrixed Rodimus Prime?

They appear to be gang molded with the weapons instead, both having the same gun as well. Brainstorm also has that same gun so Arcana is likely the same mold, too.

Titans Return as a whole is just looking absolutely absolutely amazing to me. I have yet to see a figure in Titans Return that doesn't look good to me. I love Headmasters, I really like late G1 stuff, and this whole toyline has so much playablilty and interaction between each figure. I love the idea of giving us extra heads to encourage us to switch the heads on them. I've always loved Transformers that turn into bases and/or cities. I'm totally gonna try getting as much as I possibly can from Titans Return. I might even buy some of the Takara versions too. Not certain if I'll be able to afford the Takara stuff, though.

I have a strong feeling non-Headmaster heads which fit the plugs will get developed by 3rd parties. That said, it's a strong play feature and the head-only characters like Brawn and Grimlock enhance the "play feature" aspect. If you aren't partly appreciative of the play features, I'd think MPs or statues would be more your bag.
Now, what I'd like are generic bodies for the headless Transformers with army building encouraged.
Maybe a TR Titanmaster Sunstreaker so we can get headless IDW Sunstreaker clone bodies. Or maybe Vehicons and Guardians?
