Trouble in the 3rd Dimension for Transformers 3?
Thanks to Bob from movie site iesb.net for letting us know that there may be some postproduction issues brewing for Transformers 3, specifically with the 3D footage for the film. According to the article, the issue is with the native 3D footage, the material that was actually filmed with 3D equipment versus a digital, 2D camera. Insiders working on the film report that this footage "looks like #@*$" and may have to be scrapped or go through additional post production. The article goes on to mention that the problems, if true, may stem from Michael Bay's high energy, "aggressive" filming style. And while the final cut may look good in 3D, it may not live up to the moviegoer expectations set by benchmarks such as Avatar.

This could be a problem, hopefully there's no set backs because of it.

Strangely enough, that was the FIRST thing that popped into my head when they talked about making this 3D. Michael Bay's "Shoot for the Edit" and quick cuts, while great as 2D pieces that move things along at a frantic pace are WAY too jerky to really effectively work with the current 3D tech. Avatar doesn't have a ton of those frantic action cuts at all. Most of it is panning, and even when it goes 'hand-held' it's no where NEAR as nuts as when Bay goes hand held.
Hopefully they'll clean it up.
Hopefully they'll clean it up.

i just hope this will improve things. i mean there was a loop hole in the first movie (Barricade), and there were plenty in ROTF.

Yeah, the shooting style of Bay def contributed to this fiasco. Honestly, being Paramount demanded such a high turnaround....I'm not at all surprised at all the issues popping up. Whats the tally now?
1. Filming halted in Washington
2. BB car crash fiasco
3. Extra injured on set
4. Pending lawsuit
5. Cancelation of sequence due to location and budget
6. 3D Footage is "garbage"
7. Megan Fox walked.
I'm at 6, I'm sure I missed something though. Honestly, I think Paramount should have waited till 2011, bieng this summer ALOT of big league films are going to hit, which will no doubt give TF3 more then ample competition. I don't predict the same phenom last year where it Bogart'd the entire summer boxoffice due to a lack of competition. If they waited till 2011, they would have had less competition, and work out all of these impending bugs.
Aw well, I think if they can't edit and cut around whats been shot, they'll need to re-shoot or cut their losses and ditch the 3D being filming with the 3d cameras demands more time and patience...patience not being Bays strong suit. Nor can Paramount afford the time for that matter.

Re: Trouble in the 3rd Dimension for Transformers 3?
Michael Bay's site moderator Nelson commented this article. He simply said: "BS".
You can draw the conclusions for yourselves.
By the way let's not forget that Michael Bay said that before filming started they made a test if his filming style will look good in 3D and they were very satisfied with the result. Then they decided to go 3D. So I really I don't believe that suddenly the footage turned to be so bad.

Re: Trouble in the 3rd Dimension for Transformers 3?
Well this just proves to me that 3D does not equal quality.
It also shows that haste IS waste. The studio demanded the 3rd
film ready for next year and more or less forced Michael Bay
to work with new technology that he was unfamiliar with and
did not want to. Know we can read why.
This is going to cost more time and money. Somehow I doubt that
the studio will have learned anything from this event.
Just my thoughts.

Re: Trouble in the 3rd Dimension for Transformers 3?
And now here is what Michael Bay thinks of this article (taken from Shoot for the Edit):
"Wow, I read these morons on the internet who think they are in the know. "We have have problems with our 3D????" Really? Come into my edit room and I will show you beautiful 3D. There has never been a live action show that has pushed the boundaries of 3D like Transformers 3. We shot the entire movie with 3D cameras. I actually loved shooting in 3D. I will give full details of my process and why I liked 3D in the next week right before the Transformers announcement piece comes out on Tron and Narnia.
Michael"
And a second comment:
"And don't watch this movie in 2D, we made it for 3D."
So this is a direct confirmation that TF3 trailer will debut with Tron and Narnia. And also that the whole movie is shot with 3D cameras and looks great.

Bonecrusher's alt mode appeared but didn't do anything. Jolt appeared only in the Climax. Megs was resurrected by using a Constructicon's spark and the piece of the cube. Wheelie seem to have disappeared. Barricade didn't appear.
my point is this movie was only nominated for best sound while razzies piled up despite 2009 biggest earner. they have to make this movie 2011's biggest hit.

I'd enjoy 3D films more if they made glasses I could actually wear over my glasses, thats the big flaw of 3D tech. I've only seen one pair of glasses that fit over my own, for a samsung 3D TV, and it is not like I have huge glasses or anything.

Wait, Mikey's 'brand' of shooting has created issues with the quality of what will be seen?
Noooooo, you're kidding.
Lol.
However, in this instance I do hope they get a handle on it. I've already promised my son we'd go see it in 3D.

Re: Trouble in the 3rd Dimension for Transformers 3?
i would have to agree with bay with this one ever 3d movie ive seen when action is fast paced 3d effects look littel blury when movie is still slow motion effects paning motion thats when you can see 3d effects in there full potiontial i saw resident evil in 3d corworkers like crazy about it 3d stuff i ddint see to many stuff in when there was 3d involved in fast action scenes most of time it was blurry.
do i hate 3d yes i gave 3d shot it didint work out for me maybe hollywood will catch on making everymovie in 3d will garrentee you alot of money as avatar did avatar made its money with its characters, effects not with 3d. 3d or no 3d it would of made same amount of money either way maybe littel less since 3d tickets are few dollars more than 2d.
me i see all movies in 2d

Haha, I like how the post implies that Avatar was any good and that the 3D was of a high quality.
(No, not all of us think like a mainstream crowd; in my opinion the film was a waste of time and money and the 3D added nothing to it at all and Cameron should've kept 3D in Universal Studios with Terminator 2: 3D...Now THAT'S a 3D adventure!)
Anyway, why can't they keep consistancy and release as per the first two?
At least Michael was sceptical from the beginning; so was I!

I've been compiling a scale list (largest to smallest) of the Film Transformers based on; vehicle/alternate modes (with the best dimension data possible), as many official charts I could find & most crucially, the figures I actually own & desire! If anyone would like a bit of assistance in scale or would simply like a peek at the list, do say so! ^^
(Also been working on something big; I'm a writer, so that's a clue...

This thread hit a nerve with Mickey? Oh thats just awesome, I wonder if somewhere, something randomly exploded....cause thats how the law of cause and effect applies to Michaels person

I would luv to come into your editing room Mickey, for soooo many reasons ha ha. I luv his close to bi-polar attitude concerning 3D, how it went from stealing jobs from americans to the bestest thing ever in cinema, it's pretty awesome just watching him "react" now. Like a bonus movie within a movie.
As for the footage, I guess it's all fine. Even so, I'm sitting in the back row when I see this film in 3D, however now I might just watch it in 2D just to see his reaction to that ha ha ha. Even so, I made the mistake of sitting too close for ROTF, and my eyes paid for it. It was close to Cloverfeild levels of dizziness. I can only imagine what my eyes will do if all those XCU's are in 3D

Only problem I see is for cinemas without digital projectors. Even the most high quality 3D pics can go off with digital projectors, problems get higher with traditional projectors (Shout out to my bud at the theatres) and if there are any sort of problems Mickey can't see on his awesome waaaayyyy too expensive digital monitors and home entertainment system...they will be amplified to ungodly levels once it hits the mainstream media. Hopefully, for his sake I hope he's right, cause thats an aweful lot of work just for it to go apesh!t.
