Underwhelmed By Leader ROTF Optimus Prime

The color scheme isn't all that attractive and this is from my comparison with Robovision Prime. I think the blue is a tab bit dark. I am somewhat bummed out that it serves more as a piece for diplay than for playing but I am guessing that it is expected with Leader class toys. But my biggest gripe is the lack of a gun. I mean how can they release an Optimus Prime figure (unless it is one of those tiny Legends version) without his trademark rifle? But overall I see this figure being more a display model than an actual toy that you can fiddle around with.

Nobody said these guys where easy to transform. However Prime is a toy. ITs difficult toy but he is a toy.

And if you want a leader class prime with a gun look for Buster Prime, he's got the big rifle.

I think your complaints are all off-base.

The blue is too dark? Compared to what? It's a movie figure, not a G1 homage.

Trademark rifle? I thought Prime's trademark weapon was his glowing/flaming axe.

More for display than playing? Of course. Hasbro didn't intend for anyone to buy $45 Leader figures for their kids to bang against each other on the playground while making "pew-pew" sounds.

Of course, it does make a great display piece, but...

With the chest/Mechalive gimmick, the soundable horn, the flip-out blades, the multiple points of articulation AND the rubberised smokestacks that are especially designed not to break easily...

well, I'd argue this figure ticks both boxes! And with a transformation that rewarding, it's almost a waste to just use it for display!

I get what you're saying. There's been alot of hype on the best figures of the ROTF Line. Human Alliance 'Bee, Leader Prime, etc. That means that the figure has to meet up to alot of expectations. Sometimes it just doesn't happen..... take for example, for some reason everyone was jumping on the Cybertron Sideways mold this year with all of it's releases at Botcon. I get Cybertron Sideways.... and yeah, not really liking it so much.

For me, RotF Leader OP's main claim to fame is the toy engineering. I think it has a satisfying transformation design and a great level of likeness to the movie character in both alt and bot modes.

I do agree about the lack of a gun/rifle accessory, though. It's not a major detail but it's the details that can make a good figure better or worse in many people's opinion.

This prime was more about the swords. But I dislike that they neutered the gun gimmick in favor of the exclucive Buster Prime release.

That said, I do like the toy. It's one of the very few RotF TFs that I got.

Yes, that is why I made the thread.

Don't get me wrong, this figure is not awful. I just felt it was bit of a let down and not as playable as the Voyager class Prime (Robovision version). On a sidenote, I did get Leader Megatron before Walmart started jacking the prices back up. Admittly i was kinda impressed by the robot mode. The "gimp" arm is not bad but the inflexible death arm bothers me a bit. But more playability with Megatron than the said Optimus Prime figure.

Update: I purchased Gear of War accessory kit on impulse so may be my gripe about the lack of a gun would probably be alleviated. I have to wait and see.

How can you say the blue is too dark? I think it's too light.

More playability with brickformer Megatron? Prime can look in every direction: forward, up, down, sideways and Meg can only look forward and up. Prime has articulation all over the place and Meg is missing an elbow. I had to do hours of work on Megatron just make it so I could bare to look at him!

I was fortunate enough to be sent the Hasbro version of this figure yesterday from America as a birthday present by my parent-in-laws (knew I was marrying into the right family).

I was thinking of getting this guy, or rather the Buster version, but less because I was interested in him but more for combining when I get Jetfire, and because everyone here rated him so much.

I was pleasantly surprised. I think his transformation is complex but satisfying rather than annoying, his truck mode is deliciously solid and his swords are nice. The lack of a cannon is a downside, but for a character I don't really care about it's a great figure.

He does seem very playable and fun...

I think RoTF OP is a really great figure in just about every way except for some of the previously represented points. Everyone has their opinion though, and that is alright by me.

The transformation is way too complex for me. And those chest pieces worry the Pit out of me. The swords get in the way when folded back-and for some poses, they work better folded back.

I have ROTF Leader Prime as well as both regular and Premium versions of the '07 Prime. Personally, I kinda prefer the '07 incarnation. Though not as film-accurate as the new one, he has a solid feel to him, better articulation in places such as the arms and fingers, and just looks better IMO. Though kudos go to the ROTF version for its many attributes, I just like the '07s better. Sturdier, better proportioned (not as gangly) and better weapons that don't interfere with the poseability. Not to mention a MUCH easier transformation process.

Honestly, I prefer 07 Leader Premium over ROTF Leader Prime. I like my Primes with a bit of bulk, and the ROTF version is lean and ninja-like, which may make it more screen accurate, but the 07 version feels more like a Prime to me.

My one gripe is the slight backpack caused by the battery box. If they can fix that for the third film version, well, I don't think I could ever be happier!

The buster release is pure love. Great paint job, great face, good gun and swords...man, it's just the backpack that pokes out a bit that's a shame. Change AA batteries for watch batteries and slim that down so it lies flatter, maybe make those boxes on his booty fold away, and it'd be 100% perfect.

I like '07 Prime, too. I can play with him, transform him on a whim and not have to break out the instructions and set aside time for frustrating fiddling.
