I try to be reasonable with my colleceting, like never getting any animated stuff when it was on shelves cos i didn't like it (i regret the decision now), but i do basically consider any new tf and think that's a great figure. I never said no to any movie stuff, as i realised it was a step in a cool new direction, and there were none but movie bots around at the time. I do love the old chunky armada/energon style but i must admit the movie style has good points to it, when Hasbro design them not the movie peeps. I mean look at rotf demolishor...no, just no. But Bludgeon, yes, yes, yes! I have tried to not be a collector of sorts, as i will never want everything that comes out, so technically, i don't collect tfs, i just buy the ones i like. it just so happens i like a lot of them...
I would however term my hoard as a collection, as i have tried to "collect" certain bits (cybertron legends, classics maybe) but i will not go for a collection of a specific group aiming to get all members of that group, like ark bots. I'm happy with what i've got most of the time, but i obviously succumb to the collector oriented releases, like Scourge.
At heart i just love playing with new toys and giving myself the challenge of a new transformation, that's why i'm reluctant to buy repaints.
I get other stuff too, like Marvel figures, but by no means do i collect them, i must have only 10 marvel universe figs, cos i buy the characters i like....Marvel legends is another matter, i have loads of them and hardly touch 'em but i know i never went for all the ones that were available.

whew...

i can put that so much more simply: i'd call what i've got a collection, but i don't strive to collect for example every skywarp out there, i don't want to complete something. i think that's why i can't see myself stopping...
if anything i would say i have a legends collection as i probably will end up with all the ones available at the time if i can be bothered with repaints. i certainly tried when they started in cybertron cos i looked at them like trading cards and thought, i can spend my pocket money and try to get all of them... never did though (missing galvatron, red hot shot and galaxy force prime).
i think legends actually killed trading cards for me, now i look back on it...i must have thought "i can get a transformer or a pack of cards for the same price... duh, transformer every time!"

I find it reassuring to read that some of your guys can't quite put your finger on why you collect, as I was slightly concerned I was slightly strange. I'd say a good 90% of my 400 odd transformer collection is MISB, and given it's size (and bulk that comes with the boxes) it means that they all sit in airtight boxes in my basement forever. I buy them, I and when a crate is full they go in the basement and never come out again. I'll never own a place big enough to display them, so I often wonder what the point is?

Maybe its just enough for me to know they're there? Maybe there is a slim hope that someday I will have the room for them? I dunno. The only thing I do know is I'll buy more. Maybe ODB should be OCD? ;)

Look at that - 3 posts in a year. Go me.

Yeah, I wish I had a good answer for that. Some of the boxes are works of art, especially the old G1 stuff and the masterpieces. I do remember when I was young and got transformers for christmas my parents used to get quite annoyed if I ripped into the boxes to get at the toy (they were weirdly strict about such things - like reading books with clean hands...) so it might be that.

That said I just got my Generations Thundercracker and the box has been well and truly mangled, so I guess the therapy can start with him.

damn your collection thread would be of just be boxes in a room, haa 3 posts in a year all time record, can we submit this to the front page =D

some boxes are real nice though, like the 00 reissues, or G1 and G2 stuff

but i understand when you say "its just enough to know they're there" for example its like characters like galvatron as i don't like the mold, but i gone out of my way to get the best version of him i can afford atm, its easier to have him when he's available than regret it later, and suffer buyers remorse something we all do

or fp warbot, its the best representation of springer, but the figure to me just doesn't seem right, i have him and appreciate his complexities, but i feel there could be a better version of him

wasp you regret not buying animated?, saw the vid man liked it, was pretty wacky nice drawings though

this brings up something i was thinking about today, as i remember seeing a tf documentary on the 1986 movie dvd, where a dude mentions that he expects in future, there would be self transforming robots

as most of us appreciate the engineering behind tfs, would we collect them to the same extent we have? and if so how would it affect our, collection habits

because lets face it one of the pleasures of having tf's is playing with its transformations and finding different alt modes

It's a nifty idea and would make the toys way more playable, but to have them self transform would make them SUPER expensive. It'd be a sure fire way to financial ruin for Hasbro. :P

Actually thats a really good point. I think there are a few figures I bought that fall into that category. What with scalpers, piss-poor and erratic distribution sometimes you don't have time to think a purchase through. Thats when you end up paying internet prices for say Darkmount, only to find him peg-warming at half the price 4 weeks later. Win some lose some.

Add to the list "for" collecting that really warm fuzzy feeling you get when you see an auction ending on ebay that either through luck or witchcraft no-one else has noticed and you end up with the worlds greatest bargain. Got to love that.

i know what you mean, i don't want to mangle the things when i crack 'em open (i keep backing boards) some packaging is just too nice, but i'll open it anyway cos i know the thing inside is what ive paid for, the main event and will be ten times better than looking at a box.
it's good to know i've helped your mental state

@electron, cheers for watching mate. i made the music myself too.
about the engineering level of tfs, why do you think i'm gonns do robotics at uni? ;)

like all technology it would start off expensive, big and bulky, but in time it would get cheaper and cheaper

as for playabilty? i'd feel they maybe more fragile, so it would be more like press a button and watch it transform then leave it to be admired

yeh distribution is a massive effecting factor with UK collectors, its depends who gets them and where in the country and sometimes we don't even get sed figure
Its what makes it hard for collectors in the UK

its like ROTF superion i got him at AA for £35 and thought yeah bargain, then boom he's everywhere goin for much less

ebay bargins are few and far between, but i have to say i've had some great ones

They would have to be made sturdy though, for kids. If they broke just from a few drops or moderately rough play, they'd be worthless as toys.

Self transforming Transformers would be boring, half the fun of them is transforming them yourself. Also Armada Prime's trailer transformed on its own and that was terrible.
