about a month ago he was rushed to the E.R. and diagnosed with soft kidney stones, but aparrantly it was the first stages of kidney falier and he was misdiagnosed. He also snuck in a fith of vodka for his day and a half stay. He was hospitalized last wednesday, after litterally looking like a stroke vicim for 3 weeks. He is currently incoherent, completely delusional, and has no idea where he is or who people are, if he's concious.
So please i know we're all young and like to party, but remember to not over do it or to make it a life style. You have no idea how heartbreaking it is to your friends and family when your only 30, on your deathbed, and can't recognize your closest friends and family.

Here however, alcohol free since 1982. Since that's out of the way, I wonder what other horrors I have waiting for me in the future. Heart disease, cancer, alzheimers, parkinsons. Life is so wonderful.
Anyhoo.
You and your unfortunate friend have my sympathies.

...as with all things, moderation is the key. When you lose the ability to moderate any aspect of your life, you will lose. Just the way it is.

My roommate is 25, and also happens to be an excessive alcoholic. He goes through a half gallon of vodka every two days. He's been doing that for about 3 years, ever since he kicked a cocaine habit. While I applaud his for getting off the powder, all he's really done is substitute alcohol in its place. In a couple more years, I can totally see my roommate being in the same situation as yours. I'm going to show him this post tomorrow, though I doubt it'll actually change anything.

Hell, I know people in final-stage liver disease caused by their drinking and they still chug the firewater like Pepsi! It's sad, but addiction is like that....All you can do, as their friend, is inform them of your concern and assist them if they ask for help kicking the habit, but other than that, there is nothing you can do. It sucks when you practically have to sit on your hands and watch people you care about slowly poison themselves, but the only person who can save them is them.

Umm...alcoholism and the drinker is the cause of death not the drink itself. It's not fun I know. But remember sometimes people have to reach rock bottom before they get help. The hospital staff should have their butts kicked in by devastator. For allowing him to get a hold of vodka in the firstplace.
Second watch out when videos say booze is bad they streach the truth to scare people and they are made by power hungery organizations like MADD who basicly infringe on your rights to have a beer to drink woth friends.
Objects don't kill people, people kill people folks.

That is the sad thing, its not like you can call 911 and get them commited. There is nothing you can say or do to change them except drop them like a hat. Only when they reach rock bottom do they get help it's a sad fact.

This all reminds me of one of my favorite Dr. house quotes:
"There is no such thing as a recovered alcoholic. If someone never takes a drink again, they didn't live long enough."
ALways remember that everyone, keep an eye on the recovering! Do not pressure them into going to a bar! DO not keep alcohol in the house! It is a terrible addiction, one someone never truely gets over.

I knew a guy, straight laced, never put a foot out of line, turned 18 and became legal to drink, every Friday and Saturday night he was out binge drinking. He got the wake up call to stop when during one of his drunken binges his heart ended up stopping.

Myself, I don't do anything that gets me 'out of control' because I'm a control freak. But I can still see a huge amount of territory between 'don't drink goody two shoes' and 'wasted beyond all plausible recognition'. It's not exactly a thin line. But I guess we live in an EXTREME culture where everything's gotta be all like EXTREME and over the top and huge. And this is where it gets you: Party hard? More like party without any orginality. Anyone who needs to get hammered to act goofy has serious issues.
THIS is why they should bring back VH1 Behind the Music.

It's always hard to lose people who are close to you, and especially when it is due to the lifestyle choices they made.
Hang in there N_V, our thoughts are with you.
Once I ran an Anime festival with over 6,000 attendees. Now... not so much.

This is why I've always been afraid to drink in the first place. It's against my religion for one thing, but I've always been afraid of the stuff since I have a family history of angry drunks. I don't want to put anyone in danger because of something stupid I may do while under the influence.

What a horrible way to go.
This is another example of why I stopped drinking. I could've been that guy. There's a history of excessive drinking on both sides of my family, and my paternal grandfather drank himself to death. (Not to mention, he was an abusive, violent man.)
So with that in mind, plus I don't like how stupid I am when I'm drunk (which happens easily) I decided to kick the habit altogether. I haven't had a drink in three years and I will beat the hell out of myself if I get the thought to do so again.
I was blessed and fortunate to dodge that bullet before it was too late, and after seeing this, I'm so glad it ended on a positive note.
I don't think folks realize how easy it is to become alcoholic... but it can be as easy as breathing air.
