Beast Wars seasons 2 and 3: Considered the greatest pieces of Transformers cartoon writing in the Western World... A major flop in Japan.Skritz wrote:Sabrblade wrote:Pics of Japanes Earthrise Wave 2 - https://hobby.dengeki.com/news/892663/
Trip-Up & Daddy-O, Wheeljack, and Ironworks.
Unlike the Hasbro release of Trip-Up & Daddy-O, which will be a mass retail release, the TakaraTomy version will instead be sold as a TakaraTomy Mall exclusive, much like how both Soundbarrier and Grapple will be as well, despite their Hasbro versions also being mass retail.
I guess Siege wasn't as much of a success in Japan that more and more of its successor line's product is being relegated to TTM instead of normal retail.
We live in weird times when the Japanese toyline is 'worse'.

That's because Beast Wars in Japan was made into a comedic dub, in a rare reversal of the cliche of 'Americans dumb down anime'.

I think what Sabrblade meant was that Beast wars was treat the same in Japan across its tenure, so beast wars seasons 2 & 3 had other reasons besides dub, that they flopped. I mean beast machines didn't even get shown over there till 2004 if I remember correctly.
Though is there anyway to find out how well Siege did over there? Anyone have any contact with Japanese fans?

From the time I spent there, Studio series seemed to be aimed at kids with more prominent displays and most of the stores that had transformers figures had them next to gundams/high end collectables/S.H figures rather than being in a 'toy' section. Chromia definitely appeared to be abundant where ever I found her (which wasnt many places as not many stores had siege but it was only early waves back then Shockwave etc and sadly just as expensive as UK retail with a few exceptions for MPs).
The second hand stores didn't have Siege either but that could be a case of anything they got being sold online as soon as it came in.

You know, as much as I'm the guy who want them to show up in CHUG I'm starting to think we will never see Star Saber or Deathsaurus. Titans Return was the line where the obscure Japanese G1 characters got brand new mold (I'd argue Sixshot count, even if he was in the Rebirth) and were released at the Leader price point. None of these guys sold particularly well and the Leader class since has been nothing but heavy hitters for mass retail: Orion Pax/Optimus Prime, Hot Rod/Rodimus, Ultra Magnus, Shockwave and Astrotrain. The exceptions are Optimus Primal (due to the fan vote) and Galaxy Convoy who, granted, was a retool and technically just another form of Optimus Prime.
Maybe they'll never bother risking such a large price point on characters like Overlord again, given how he warmed shelves.

I think part of the issue is that Overlord and Sky Shadow both had weirder transformations with the splitting in half to form different vehicle modes. POTP is different because it was designed around Primes, but I think we might get lucky later down the line. I hope anyway

As pretty much a noob, my first thought on seeing Overlord (didn't even remember him!) was, 'Hes a bit bland for the cost!'.
He's around £22 in Smyths right now from memory. I really like how he was used in the previous IDW comics and I still wouldn't buy him, even at that price.

Re: Transformers War for Cybertron: Earthrise Discussion Thread
Overlord suffers from the issues of the TR Leaders: yes, they are noticeable bigger than what Siege offers and yes there was some downscaling. But at the same time? The TR Leaders make look good and chunky but this chunkyness and wonky engineering due to gimmicks (Overlord and mold mate are technically Duocons and Six Shot is a six-changer) and sticking too much to the G1 design gives them some seriously gimped articulation, especially in the arms and at the waist (waist joints are near nonexistent beyond Deluxe in TR!).
That said Overlord still looks good and so is Black Shadow. They are just very block and brickish compared to the smaller but more articulate "Voyager+" figures of Siege.

Technically one can have any Seeker they want from any seeker mold so long as they have enough paint, skill and patience!

Fair enough, just pointing out that Seekers are a customizer's wet dream. Still got those spare POTP Starscreams I never got to fully paint and which are now obsolete thanks to Siege. Not sure wtf I'll do with all three (or was it four?) of the bastards. They were shelfwarming and going on sale anyway.

I was trying to have a guess at what other characters we`ll see in earthrise and noticed something.
Assuming earthrise follows a similar pattern to release as Siege, we should get some surprise deluxe characters each wave.
In siege it was
Wave 1 - Cog
Wave 2 - Sixgun, Chromia
Wave 3 - Brunt
Wave 4 - Barricade, Impactor
We also got Rung too as a Battlemaster
For Earthrise Ironworks appears to be the surprise for wave one. Sound barrier too.
So it’s just an educated guess, but the rest of the siege line should be filled out with the remaining 1984/5 G1 characters but with another 5 surprise characters.
Rumours around Quintessa etc would fit in with this, but I do like the idea of some obscure G1 characters getting a new lease of life along with some characters coming across from the comics / movie verse.
What does everyone think, anyone want to take a guess at surprise characters we might see?

That being said about Seekers I'm really hoping that Red Wing makes it over the way Starscream has.
The Siege mold is just ok but for the Earthrise line he would look epic...IMHO.

I never got Red Wing, and I don't particularly give a crap about the tetrajet mode, even if I did get Thundercracker and Starscream in Siege (so far, if I find Skywarp loose he's mine too), I always loved the design of the G1 Seekers, especially the robot modes. They're just so pleasing to the eyes, they're perfectly proportional bipedals, and the F-15 is just a gorgeous jet.D-Maximal_Primal wrote:But it is a very attractive red, he looks really good. There's gotta be a zero percent chance that Deathsaurus gets released in a mainstream commercial line, and I wouldn't hold out too much hope for Star Saber either. The best bet would be releases in Generations Selects as retools of other characters. The biggest challenge I see for that is their builds are each very unique. Deathsaurus has the Breastforce components, but even excluding that, you're still talking about a dragon to humanoid transformation. There are a few of them across various US toylines, like BW and RiD Megatrons, but nothing that looks close. Takara certainly could do a unique mold, but would the sales make up for the cost?
Star Saber might be easier, since there are plenty of spaceships in Transformers, even if none of them look like him. But even in this case, how do you represent the complexity of the original toy, especially the combination with Leo? It seems like to wind up with something practical, they would have to make sacrifices that would undermine the original appeal.
I would claim that I don't understand the enthusiasm for CHUG versions of characters that weren't released in my region's toylines, but I personally would really like to see Rotorstorm and Thunderclash, so I can't judge.

Well, for Victory Leo its a lot simpler if you realize he's basically just a Weaponizer anyway!

Exactly! Even better when you think that they have a selects repaint in the form of Black Victory Starsaber from Robot Masters!
Also Selects (given hasbro initiative here) has been repaints and headswaps, so I doubt Starsaber would end up there unless Takara announced it.

Honestly when I saw the weaponizer 'boot mode' I immediately thought about this Brave-esque transformation scheme first pioneered in Transformers via God Bomber and Victory Leo, where a secondary robot form armor and weapon parts for the main hero. Victory Leo would be totally doable as a Voyager Weaponizer.
