Censorship, good ore the Devil?

OK, now we all know there are such things as censored movies and stuff, but when does it go to far?
For example:
Books, comics, art.
Now a wile back I (was forced by my teacher) read a really boring book, which was written by some famous US Author (whos name and tite of the book I forgot, yes it was that exiting) , it was about a school class getting to read Huckleberry Finn.
Some parents suddenly demanded that the book was taken out of the school libary and banned from the market, becos it used the word Ni*** (you know I hate it and so do many).
But now comes the point, they all forget that the book was written at a time as that word was normal, and most importantly the story is about freeing the Afro-Americans from slavery and not to get them into it!
The book also stated that the novel was censored and taken from the market in a few American States!
And the Headmaster of the school even riped out pages of the Bible if they were racist ore sexual!
Now in Germany it is against the law to use the Swastika in any form, so they censor it meaning that my Spider-Man reprints and my Ghost Rider comics have for squares on the flags instead of it!
So I ask you do you think censoring art as in pictures and books and any other form is wrong or is it legit?

i read about a librarian going through and drawing pants (with sharpie!) on the boy in maurice syndak's "in the night kitchen" because he is pants-less in some pages. way to ruin great artwork for no reason!
and don't get me started on all the "anti-harry potter-ism" especially here in the southern united states!

Oh yes! Harry Potter makes children become Wiccan! OOOO!! Nevermind it's igniting children's passion to read because it is phenomanally written, no. It has magic in it, so it's the devil. Thank goodness for people looking out for us, like the infamous "God Warrior".

oh yes i loathe censorship, as my fellow ODBers can attest to, in my opinion, as long and no one is getting hurt (or hurt against their will
) or being forced to do do something they dont want to or affect anyone else...then people should just be able to do what they want to
as for books, tv and films...if they aint suitable for certain people (usually kids) then dont make the damn things available to them...if i wanna see boobs, bums, violence, blood and other stuff ...why cant I, im a level-headed adult (more or less
) and seeing stuff like that doesnt make me go crazy
Oh god...youve set me off on a rant now...

Funny you should mention this. Ireland is trying to ban "Should you be laughing at this". Yes, I very much hate censorship.

I hate censorship almost as much as I hate political correctness which is another topic entirely.
I cna't recall a time that I've personally been censored through books or art but I did read Huck Finn partially because my teacher was a hick.

Quite right. Don't ban it because it 'turns kids to the occult'... just ban it because it's cr*p!

Here's a couple of placards I thought might come in handy...

I will also jump on the anti-censorship wagon. If you don't like something, don't look or listen to it. If your worried about your kids, be a freaking parent and teach them your values. You don't want your freedom to not be subjected to things that you deem offensive? Well I want my freedom to see and listen to all of those things that you hate.
And as for censorship of things like Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, here's a little note for you. It's history. It happened, and it should be remembered, good or bad. I read those books in Junior High and didn't even like them. But I'm glad that I was given a chance to read them.
I find censorship proponents so one sided. They want what they want, but they don't give a damn about anybody else.

I absolutely hate censorship. I would love it if everyone was fully able to display exactly what they think and how they feel on any given subject.
It makes identifying people I'd like to avoid easier.

I can't stand it either.
Like when AT&T censored a small portion of Pearl Jam's concert on the web, the part where they bashed George Bush? You assholes.
That was single handedly one of the MOST entertaining hours of television I have watched in 10 years. She even ripped up the $10,000 she won for her family claiming it was the devil's money. God Warrior - I love it!

SOME things need to be censored, however for the most part, censorship has now gotten out of control.
Mostly because of small vocal minority groups.
The Huckleberry Finn thing is probably the best case of sensitivity out of control.
Yes, the word "nigger" is a racist term and was used in the book. However the book was set in a time when it wasn't a taboo word.
While it may be offensive now, it wasn't considered racist back then. And THAT is what kids should be taught. Teach them the difference. Lead them read Huck Finn uncensored but ensure they know that it's WRONG to use the term "nigger" but teach them what life was like when the book was written and set and teach them how much society has changed over the years.
Same with the Swastika, people find it offensive now, but it is an aspect of history. It happened, censoring it won't change what happened, all it does is turn a blind eye to it. Again, teach kids history and how things have changed over the years.
I do believe though that there are some things in the world that need to be censored, basic things like making sure kids shows are just that, kids shows, without adult themes or adult ads. But unfortunately censorship is rapidly spiralling out of control and it's bringing society down with it.

You do realized, don't you, that children and adults are not seperate species. Children grow into adults. I believe there is more harm in sheltering children from anything that could be considered adult (nudity especially) than there is in allowing them to see it.
Children don't become accustomed to the family pets by being kept away from them.

So you'd support your 5 year old being exposed a news report and hear and see graphic details and images of another 5 year old being brutally raped and then murdered?
There are some things children simply don't need to be subjected to.
