Beast machines. Was it really that bad?

Postby irishking44 » Fri Jun 29, 2007 10:33 pm

Everyone disses beast machines but personally i think the show was very well done.

The storyline was very deep and intrigueing and eventhough the characters were ugly I think they were an accurate depiction of what Technorganic beings would look like.

Also When fans say that cyberton could not have had an organic core because the quints built it that is'nt neccessarily true considering one of the key concepts in almost any sci-fi show is that the more advanced your technology is the more organic like your tech will appear.(thus the highest level of TF evolution is as technorganic forms) which means that the quints still could have built cyberton butt could have used bio-engineering techniques to do it.(at least for it's core)

not a bad concept you got there, considering the Quintessons themselves were techno organic beings...

Though I'm in a bit of disagreement about the show's execution being "well-done," I do admit that the concept was really cool.

Okay, so in the previous incarnation of these characters, they effectively lived as organic beings, existing in some "middle ground" that crudely forced together the technological with the biological. The transition in story to focus on what could be the effects of this--embracing that unity of forms and attempting to form a natural balance--was a bit expected but nonetheless inspired. The two main opponents each evolved appropriate to the lessons learned from the previous show as well: Optimus chose to embrace this new path of unity and balance, while Megatron's failings at the hands of his subordinates prompted a shift to a "hive mind" collective of drones. The handling of Rhinox especially was possibly one of the greatest achievements of the show: shocking, but written in such a way that it wasn't convoluted. Subtle details as well--the Savage / Noble, Botanica of the plant world, and so on--all provided nice quirks to enhance the overall plot.

I guess my issues lie in just how binary the show was in its portrayal of the Maximals in their spiritual quest, and Megatron's own nigh-facist schemes. Some part of me felt like there would have been some group of resistance fighters that had escaped, but had chosen to remain technological in nature--perhaps direct descendants of Autobots and Decepticons, even--whose own interpretation of their lineage and purpose would not lead them to follow Primal's spiritual path. Similarly, it seems that Primal's dogma was almost as much forced upon Cybertron as Megatron's rule: perhaps diving too much into the old Primus mythos (but then again, Beast Wars laid out that groundwork itself), could it be said that the "organic core" of Cybertron was the true destiny of the Transformer race?

I guess I would've been much happier with the series if more was done to truly explore the philosophical undertakings of the technorganic "path." Still, I agree...I don't think it deserves nearly as much of the flack as it gets.

I caught up with Beast Machines on DVD and I can't see why it recieves so much hate. Sure the storyline is a little out there, but the characters (for the most part) are still intact from Beast Wars. It wasn't the best show out there for sure, but it was pretty good.

My only real complaint is that I can't reconsile how Megatron effectively took over all of cybertron on his own in the spance of time between his reintry and the BW maximals orbital return. I truely liked the personaslity of BW megs but the BM counterpart makes me think of a bowel movement... Maybe i'm just like all the Rodimus haters but It seemed to build of a slippery slope to me. If you can't except Megatron mean's of taking over Cybertron much of what takes place following that take over becomes mute if not somewhat conflicted... I'm one of those who can't except Megatron concuring Cybertron that easily upon his return let alone the ease of which a hand full of sparks could overthrough an entire planet. Adding a the number of seemingly forced personality changes (and i'm not counting Rhinox) and it make for atleast one disapointed transfan... me.

I watched it through to the end but with the forced progression of the cast, the unbelievable underlining plot and strong divergent from BW i could never consider it a proper sequel to what BW was.

Even the Voice Actors seem to agree but let not open that can here...

That said, it was easier to watch than Energon or Cybertron. It's subplots were better done than Armada's. I would rather see it again over a repeat of the other mentioned series. BW set the bar for me after G1, and BM to me just led producers to think Arma-Ener-tron was a better alternative... with the fans proving them right...

Sorry guys but if that makes me a hater, then i'm a hatin'

Transwarp moves through space and time, as they Maximal's approached their destination, they were also moving forward through time. Since Megatron broke free from the ship before the trip was complete, he arrived years, possibly centuries before the Maximals. Plenty of time for Megatron to accomplish his agenda.

I pretty much agree with what you say, The character designs could have been better, the story was just 100% badass, Thats what makes Beast machines my favourite TF series.

but about that whole organic thing that cybertron had, Yes I saw the ep The Dweller In the Depths, and I think that technologic animals could have lived on Cybertron before the quintessons made Cybertron into there factory, Its possible that they were driven to the core of Cybertron (as seen) and laid dorment for many years.
