So I'm gettin' ready to make a pizza and starting the movie on dvd (I'm almost broke until Tues.).
I started thinking about how much potential these movies have.
And once it becomes a trilogy(?),
will it be TRULY considered a classic, a "staple series",
a "big boy" in the realm of cinema?
Will it match up to Lord of the Rings? Aliens?
Or even Star Wars?

man, that'd be awesome.
but this series will not fit in cause its got so many commercials.
there arent any epic trilogies I can think of with so much product placement.
back to the future doesnt count cause they didnt sell deloreans anymore when it came out.

Honestly, I don't think you can compare Transformers to an Epic like Lord of the Rings. It's apples and oranges. Peter Jackson made a movie that everyone knew would have to be over 3 hours just to cover a third of the material. Bay was working on a different level. Sadly I don't think Transformers will ever be as big as the major trilogies.

I'd have to agree it won't be as big as the classics like Star Wars. At the end of the day it's a cheap and cheerful, big dumb summer movie. As well as a lengthy commercial for cars, toys, and gadgets. (And men who like to watch orange skinned skeleton-girls bend provocatively over cars.) If it endures it will be piggybacking on the pre-established, fan-perpetuated, Transformers machine.
Unless of course, by some miracle the sequels are beyond awesome in all aspects. But given the content of the first one, it's not likely to be the case.

I don't think product placement/commercials can be a "mark against".
This is gonna be the case for lots of movies in the future that will have the potential of being classics.
Not to mention, the movie, story, etc.is based ON a product.
Now, is that THE reason it won't be a classic?
Maybe.
Here's how I see it:
These movies may never match:
Lord of the Rings
The Godfather
James Bond
Star Wars (even though I think episodes 1,2, & 3 were a letdown)
Has potential to be as good as:
The Matrix (that first movie is still awesome)
Indiana Jones
Pirates of the Caribbean
Aliens
Predator
The Terminator
The Bourne Series
Back to the Future
Already better than:
Spider Man
Superman
Batman
Underworld
Blade
Ghostbusters
Die Hard
Mission Impossible
Species
Jurassic Park
Robocop
Harry Potter
Star Trek
The Mummy
And the majority of horror flick series
