Are you are completist or a pick & choose type of TF toy buyer?
Are you are completist or a pick & choose type of TF toy buyer?
When I say completist,I am not referring to owning every single TF toy from 1984 all the way thru 2011. I am referring to being a completist of a entire yearly TF toy line worth of toys. examples: Animated, energon, cybertron, botcon, movie verse,etc...
Personally,I don't like buying stuff I hate/loate just out of being a completist.
I prefer to be very picky & pick & choose what TF toys I buy. based off my unique taste & preferences.

Pick and Choose. I pick up only who I like and don't give a slag about what universe they belong in. All of mine mingle together in multiversal harmony.

Depends on my mood.
Right now I'm on an AEC kick and I'll probably end up eventuall owning most of them.
Notice how I say most. I say that because buying all those Japanese Minicons will drive me insane.
I usually buy up what I can though when I can get a good deal.

I just buy what appeals to me, so I guess that means "pick and choose".

And it's just my frickin' luck that the ones I picked for the first half of this year are ones that have yet to be seen in any local store.

Definitely pick and choose, based on my own tastes. With Transformers I only ever buy the ones I like. There's way too many Transformers out there to buy the ones I don't like, just for a series completeness sake.
Right now I'm working on several of the G1 Pretenders I like, based on looks and character, but that's definitely not going to be all of them.
All of them can stand on my shelves together, G1 with Beast Wars with RtS with FansProject, and I make sure they all get along fine...

I don't think I my budget extends to buying everything I want as well as completing a line. I'm almost totally against buying repeated molds. The nearest I'd ever get to completion is having one of every mold but there are usually molds I just don't like.
The short answer: I'm choosey.

Neither?
These days I collect at least one of each mold, preferably the original. I might pick up a repaint if I like the character or the new colour scheme REALLY impresses me.
But older lines, i'm determined to get a complete G1 collection (western release) and Beast Wars (including the Japanese stuff).

Re: Are you are completist or a pick & choose type of TF toy buyer?
For me, it depends on the line. If I really like the line I will try to get them all, others, I will just buy the things I want and not bother. Movie 1, I set out to buy the onscreen characters only, which I did. A few others did manage to get in too because they looked good, Longrack for example. However, Generations has turned me into a completist. I have all the molds from that line on my shelf right now and I don't regret it one bit. RTS, I only bought the figs intended for Generations and ignored the Movie line figs (Jazz, Tracks etc).
Watch the first of my youtube series, Friends Transform.

It depends on the line. I own all the onscreen Beast Wars characters-including Ravage from Japan-so I'm cool with that. Classics-style I'll snap up as much as I can, including third-party products. If it fits, I get it.
Not caring about scale since 1984. Just like Hasbro.

Before the original Classics line came out, I was all about getting g1 stuff. I would also pick and choose from A/E/C lines. Buuut since Classics/Generations line, I've been into that and only that. Trying to build up a G1 Neo verse. So some AEC repaints fall into that category, and when it comes to US vs Japanese stuff, I pick and choose. Example, I have United Jazz and don't need RTS, but I want US Grappel and not United Grapple. But usually one of an actual character is good enough for me. There are times where I have multiples, but not often. Oh and I'm a sucker for troop building. Seekers, Sharkticons, Sweeps.
I don't do animated because I don't want to get sucked into to many lines. One is expensive enough.
I don't do movie because I really dislike their aesthetics. Everytime I do buy a movie fig, I remember why I dislike them in the first place and in the random bins they go (smh). Only movie figure I can even kinda like are both Bludgeons.

Picky choosey.
It's mostly Neo-G1, but there are a few things that are in my collection that don't have a G1 counterpart, like RotF Brawn

I used to be a completeist... and then I moved out... and now that money is a whole lot tigheter I have to be picky. I think it is for the best though, because now I may not get as much but I definiately know that I like what I get and dont have as many well they were on the shelfers as I used to. Also my pickyness gets a whole lot more accepting when finding figs on clearance racks and bargain stores... that way my wife knows that I am saving money!

I'm a little bit of both. I'd like to call myself a "group completist", as I have many groups of figures planned out in a Word document, and am slowly collecting figures of those groups into completion.
Of those groups, the cast of the shows are easy to organise, while the groups for comics and stories are bit tougher to define, especially the Universe 2003 line and Cybertron repaints. Right now I'm on a BW II, Neo, Cybertron and Classics kick.

definitely pick and choose. I'll only get what I like, and even then, only if I have money for it and can find the damn thing.

For a long time I would jump from one line to another by buying the figures I liked best from each line but now I'm going back to trying to finish the collections I started(GN.1,Beast Wars,TFA).

Re: Are you are completist or a pick & choose type of TF toy buyer?
I'd say pick and choose, but often make small groups I just *have* to complete. Like all the characters from a certain faction from a certain show/movie, or a group of unrelated toys that have similar alt modes that could easily be a team (Barricade + Smolder + Tailwhip = Protecticons!).
That second one can be a real killer, especially since my imagination goes oh so wild. (RotF Insecticon could work as Waspinator. Add Movie Skorponok --who's DLX is in wonderful scale w/ "Waspy"-- and we got a start of a Movie-fied Predacon team... here we go...)

I used to get a bit of everything I liked, but since money has been so tight (lost my job), I have become a keen 1984-1986 G1 completist. I'm only going for one of each release mind, preferably boxed, but this should keep my collection managable.

Same like Amelie. Focused more on G1 ad a couple of molds that are worthy homages of the G1 series.

Pick and choose for sure. Like others have pointed out, there are too many Transformers, and worse, too many repaints within a given line, to buy them all.
However, I am trying to get as close as possible to having a decent modern representation of all the major G1 characters, because G1 is why I love Transformers and it's still my favorite version of Transformers. That's why I'm so interested in lines like Reveal the Shield, Universe Classics, and Generations, and the odd lot Hasbro threw into movie packaging despite that it fits better into the Universe/Generations lines.
Otherwise, I buy designs and characters that appeal to me, such as movie Deluxe Tomahawk and Scout Ransack, and all of the original Human Alliance line. I shun those that don't, like almost all of the movie Decepticons, who primarily have faces like insects, legs like chickens, the aesthetic of metal thrown into a giant blender, and no real second mode in several cases (most notably Ravage and Scorponok, but really any with "cybertronian" alt modes in the movies), which defeats the whole purpose of Transformers.
There are a few times where I'll let the character sway me over a crappy aesthetic design, though. I only bought Leader Starscream because I really wanted a movie representation of the really important characters. I am still not a fan of the robot design although the jet mode works. I bought Legends Ravage because it looks much better than the Deluxe. I am waiting for the third movie line to buy a Megatron because the first two movie Megatron alt modes were piles of crap. At least the DOTM alt mode can hide his "cybertronian" fugliness.

Includes Masterpiece, Generations, Universe, Movie, Prime, Armada/Energon/Cybertron, G1, G2, a few Japanese imports, etc. Many never opened, the rest displayed in enclosed display cases to keep the dust off. A few ads on Craigslist/OfferUp for DC/MD/VA locals, will post on boards or ebay when I have time.
