were does the Beast Wars take place in the transformers world? and why are they called Maximals and Predacons?

Beast Wars (on Earth) technically take place before G1, as they land on prehistoric earth, and find the Ark. This is because the were using a transwarp portal.
But, the Cybertronian Preds and Maximals, (including Primal, Megs and such, before they hit Earth) their lives take place long after G1.
I'm sure others can explain it better.

Beast wars is set 300 years after the cybertronian wars ended. The wars left Cybertron low on resources so both factions upgraded themselves to smaller, more efficient bodies. The Autobot one was called the Maximal upgrade, and the Decepticon one was called the Predacon upgrade, the names of the upgrades were then adopted as the new faction names to represent the changes. Since TFs are practically immortal there are many Maximals/Predacons wandering around that used to be Autobots/Decepticons.

wow ok.. umm i remember when primal found the spaceship of the autobots and found prime. so that all took place after G1?

no, the maximals and predacons are from the future, long after G1, but they were transported back in time, and crashed on a prehistoric earth, where the G1 bots were in stasis before the events of G1.

To refine this somewhat...

Almost ALL Autobots and former Decepticons became Maximals.

Some former Decepticons became Predacons. The Preds on Cybertron were kind of a political entity/terrorist group.

They weren't even sizable enough to put up a real resistance, hence Megatron's plan.

I thought most of the G1 Autobots or Decepticons had been dead by the time BW begun. I know Ravage was alive, but I don't recall any other G1 TF beign around. Not that it was ever stated in the cartoon, or otherwise, but whatever. Actually, according to the Timelines comic, the G1 Predacons were still functioning by the time of BM, seeing as how they discussed the disk & the destruction of BW Megatron. They were just in different bodies it seems like. By that time, it was after the Great War ended & it was another Golden Age of Cybertron.
