The other night I was talking to a guy who collects action figures (mostly comic book stuff like Spawn and such) and I'd mentioned if he heard about the Masterpiece Grimlock news, since he's into Dinosaurs. He'd asked if it was going to be dino Grimmy, or another mold (like a MP Alternators Grimmy, as he specifically mentioned). An argument broke out about how Masterpiece seems to only do G1 (my opinion) based that the only figures done so far are based off the G1 characters- and my friend's opinion was "if they wanted to use new versions of characters for it, they could if they wanted- they do it all the time"
Well after I left, as we couldn't even agree to disagree, I started to think: What if they did use new versions of characters? What do you guys think?
I personally think it'd be a bit dumb- if they wanted to do new versions of a character, they could use a new and ordinary toyline instead of blowing the money making something they don't know if people would like- and G1 is pretty special in TF history, and G1 always sells.
Other figures in Masterpiece?

Re: Other figures in Masterpiece?
Personally, I wouldn't mind newer stuff in the MP line. They should keep right on going with the G1 stuff until they run out of obvious mold choices, though.
A random and modern MP TF character would be pretty tough to place on our shelves.
I'd like to at least see Wheeljack, Mirage, BB and Hound before Takara switched gears on us. Also, gotta keep the AB/Decepticon ratio respectable.
I think it'll be a while before they move away from paying homage to G1.

Masterpiece seems to be a refinement of G1 toys.
By those standards current leader class (or higher) (premium) is already on the same level and hardly an option for improvement.

They can do anything they want. Whether it'd be good business sense or not is another thing.
It'd be pretty retarded to to a masterpiece Grimlock based on Alternator Grimlock.
The whole point of the Masterpiece line, as I see it, is to produce a collector's item that gets as close to screen accuracy as possible where the original toy was lacking. Alternators already were collector grade items, and they had no screen incarnation to differ from.
I can maybe see them doing some from the hugely popular movie line at some point, but I'm not particularly pushed if they don't.

If Grimlock didn't have his dino mode, I would hope that Takara would use his pre-earth Tank mode
He would be huge

That would be a great idea- if he didn't have his dino mode. I'd really love to see the War Within characters show up in a line other than the (usually) subpar Titanium line- where they could be represented with a better size and posability (and less hefty a price tag than the Titaniums)

Re: Other figures in Masterpiece?
There are alot of awesome G1 figures that still shuold be done.
Wheeljack, Swoop, Soundwave, maybe smaller masterpieces like ravage, rumble, frenzy etc. How about a masterpiece Mirage or Shockwave? I am partial to G1 so other series dont appeal to me a whole bunch.

A Masterpiece Combiner would be nice. one that actually had joints.
