Why is Venom Purple and not black?

The first three Venom figures were black & white... I used to have those way back in the day. Venom with a black gooey "symbiote" ooze, the same Venom sculpt minus the gimmick in his back & chest but with a talking backpack (by far the damn coolest thing Toy Biz had made, hehe), and a thinner Venom with a tongue-flicking action. I'm not sure what came after those, but I seem to remember the animated series had a clear Venom and a black Venom. The Spider-Man Classics Venom (not sure which series, but it was one of the early ones) is definitely black & white, as I have that one still.

i heard that theres supposed to be a black venom as a walmart exclusive. also got my black spidey today
