Universe Ironhide and Sideswipe, Yay or Nay

Postby Aeros » Mon Oct 06, 2008 3:52 pm

I had almost all but given up on universe. Sunstreaker was ok. Prowl I was very unimpressed with paint, transformation(folding wings) and the plastic just feels a bit weak, and onslaught just feeling somewhat cheap. I skipped Silverbolt with his jet backpack and Powerglide with his (not red) paintjob

But i saw Ironhide and Sideswipe sitting on the pegs the other day and couldnt keep myself from picking them up.

With Sideswipe I am very impressed. His paint and color scheme are spot on and he looks great next to his twin brother in both molds. He feels solid and tight. I have no complaints.

Ironhide's pics made me very worried about whether they would do this awesome character justice. Now if you can get passed all his parts/pieces being visible on the outside of his alt mode its not all that bad. His plastic mostly in his legs feels a bit weak like in other universe figs but his transformation and robot mode are great. I dont know if it's just mine but his head doesn't feel like it locks all the way up but even that gives him a bit of attitude with posing. Also a side note in the instuctions it shows you folding his hand back to hook his weapon on his wrist but the way it's spring loaded I think the weapon was actually designed to fit over his hand. this hand inside then to push the blade in to hold the cannon out or cannon to hold blade.

Both these figures are a must have in my opinion. and they look great posed with Sunstreaker

I'll prolly get both. But I'll be adding quite a few paint apps on Ironhide though. The alspark windows, rims etc.. Also Powerglide is very good u should give him a shot I think the red looks really bad on him.

I like both of them. Ironhide's exposed screws annoy me slightly, but it's only a matter of time until Reprolabels makes something to cover them up.

I think I'll get the Henkei versions of these figures as all the other Classics I have are Japanese.
I agree that the Sideswipe mold is very good. Him and Sunstreaker are my favourite figures in the line so far.
I'm not totally sold on Ironhide yet but maybe he'll grow on me.

yeah Ironhides alt mode leaves quite a bit to be desired. As much as I like Ironhide, those windows are hideous.

However the moment I see either one of these figures in the store they're mine.

I'll pick up Sideswipe, I like the grey bonnet/roof on the henkei better but I can live with the cheaper black Hasbro one.

Ironhide on the other hand... I'll get the Henkei, a grey face instead of blue, black gun barrels, nicer red plastic, yellow stripe etc.

I've heard alot of people have an issue with the head, there is a fix for the issue on the net somewhere...

Don't skip Silverbolt. He is excellent!!!!!

I really like Sideswipe and Ironhide. Best Ironhide to date, although his bio reads more like Kupp. Yes, the piece meal alt mode looks odd, but does look old and cracked, decrepit, like Kupp...er Ironhide's bio says he is. The blue windows and face are the yuck though.

Sideswipe is really good too. He is a very nice compliment to Sunstreaker, or vice versa. It's cool how they painted the gun to look like his shoulder missile mount. Bad thing is some half assed paint apps.

Silverstreak is good, not great, but not bad. Accurate to his G1 self. The neck collar still bugs me, but otherwise he is very good.

I'm looking forward to both of these figures...
Ironhide's alt mode is divided up a lot, but I think his bot mode is great.
I'll probably get the Henkei version of him.
Sideswipe was always a fav. Autobot of mine, and considering how much I like the Sunstreaker mold,
this should be 100% win for me.
Personally, I think Silverstreak looks even better than Prowl.
And again, I really dig the mold, so he's another I can't wait to have.

As far as the others mentioned, here's my 2 cents:

Onslaught = awesome Ultra figure. One of my new favorites of the whole line.

Silverbolt-- If I can get him on a good sale, I'll go for it. But I can wait.

Powerglide-- Zero desire to get him. I don't like that he's an Ultra class fig., and overall, I don't like the look of him anyway.
Probably would've passed on him even if he were a Deluxe.

I found Sideswipe and Silverstreak last week and IronHide today. I was highly impressed with Sideswipe, my favorite TFU to date. There's really nothing about him I don't like. Ironhide is a good figure to. Like everyone else I wish his alt mode didn't have cracks are over the place, but I feel him bot mode more than makes up for it. I'm a little puzzled why they painted his face blue and they failed to paint his rims. As for his head not coming up all the way, it's slightly annoying, but looks like it would be an easy fix.

Got all of them. 2 Ironhides, Silverstreak, and Sideswipe... for $7.77 each at Walmart. Got 2 of Ironhide cuz I really liked the homage to the G1 version. Unfortunately he fell apart the first time I tried to transform him... leg panels, hips... and his head doesn't come all the way up. The blue face was atrocious. Had to do partial tansformation to get the head up. The legs and hips still keep falling. A few mods here and there would make this one a winner, but the way Hasbro is churning them out without regards to quality is just horrible.

True, Hasbro QC has taken a nosedive over the past twelve months - Takara has slipped abit to.

Sideswipe's a definite for me, no questions asked.

Ironhide, well... I preordered the Henkei version for the much nicer color scheme, so I guess it's more of a question of if I'll be able to resist picking him up when I see him on the pegs. Either way, looking forward to having him join his Botcon incarnation :3

I also like the fact they painted his gun. But on mine the paint is great. I mean the paint alone on this figure estored my hope in Hasbro a bit. It really looks like Hasbro's QC is very hit or miss. I guess I'm gonna start in store inspecting the figures before buying.

I saw Acid storm, silverstreak, sideswipe, Ironhide and Stormcloud all here at a local walmart nearby, and wanted to get all of them, but really had my sights set on Stormcloud so got him, but the paint scheme for silverstreak was bad, but acid storm, ironhide and sideswipe really looked good, but i thought sideswipe had 2 weapons, the shoulder cannon and hand held? or can it be used either way? well going back to get one or two more soon. but yay on both

It's an either or thing. He only comes with one weapon, just like Sunstreaker.

Sideswipe has one gun. It han be held or shoulder mounted. I have mine set on his shoulder to help set him apart from his brother

Stormrider wrote:I was surprised to see someone mention that Universe Onslaught feels cheap.

I'm holding him now. don't get me wrong, with his proportiona and stature he looks like a badass. I might just be a little overcritical but the plastic just feels different. Stuff doesn't lock into place like it has in past lines with some universe. For Onslaught mostly its the legs and the light grey plastic in his inner lower leg. It's never locked and held. the electronics and sounds and lights feel just tossed in there. one click for siren, click again for gun. In previous lines you'd have a activator with the transformation that would deactivate or activate other sounds while the bot is in robot mode. the flipping wrist gun feels like another afterthought. If a kid drives Onslaught on a carpet hes gonna lose his arm(Onslaught, not the kid) or at least the gun.

He could Easily be a deluxe (like siverbolt) but by upsizing him and tossing in some electronics, Bam! 25 dolor price point. but that is just my opinion of course.

I'd surely get both, if i can find them.

Sideswipe is a clear winner. Although a repaint of Sunstreaker, he's got a different head, and chest.

Ironhide is a must-have. His character alone demands it. Although i'm a bit worried from the pictures i've seen. But usually, the actual toy is better than the picture.

Wait and see.

Hell, you get that on Powerglide. Putting him in bot mode cuts out the two jet engine noises. And now you've added another detail making me not sure about buying Onslaught. I've seen him three times in stores now, and every time I've left him on the shelf in favour of something else.
