new toy=survive
at least I think it works this way, because a lot of the original characters were killed off during the movie.

This goes far enough to imply that TF1 Jazz's 'important upper body internal system/organs' got seperated from the power flow from his Spark (which could have been in his abdomen in the Tf1 verse) when Megz tore him in half, thereby killing him or at least rendering his upper body section lifeless (tho Ironhide or Ratchet later says something to Prime like "we couldn't get to him/save him (in time?)" so maybe his lower section bled out of life more slowly?( I doubt this and suggest instead that they couldn't get to the rooftop to help Jazz at all).
The same abdomen-is-the-actual-bot notion also allows TF1 Megatron to have been killed (by the AllSparkShard to the chest) due to massive energy overload (assuming that at least some TFs have an 'auxilliary system cavity with intake ports to allow for massive energy overdose if used incorrectly' in their chests that can accomodate for things like Primes' Matrix (which we don't see in his chest in TF1, of course),G1 Prowls' Battle Analysis Computer, the various MiniCon and Powerlinx anatomical upgrade requirements and such like.
Of course, BoneCrusher gets killed by decapitation in TF1, whilst StarScream loses an arm in Rotf and just clicks it back into place without even an ouch, meaning that it's ultimately a matter of 'death by corporate decision'.
In the original movie, Ironhide and Prowl are assumed to die, Ironhide by implied headshot from Megzys' cannon no less, whilst Prowl seems to have all his internal systems catch fire and get slagged (bad way to go). Both reappear all over the timelines, and Beast Wars Prowl even has suspicions that he is recollecting his past life (presumably as G1 Prowl)...
It can be argued that Unicrons design/redesign parameters never intended for a Tfs 'Soul' to be destroyed or affected at all by Unicronian Wartech (or maybe just Unicronian war Strategies and requirements and not Tech per se), which could explain why Starscream remained quite vitally functional as a ghost, (whilst Scourges' Cannon could sterilize a whole planet, the souls/life energies of any inhabitants of said planet could still be left over to be harvested by Unicron if necessary).
Some characters have been killed by being redesigned in a really badly concieved format or multiple format angles (Armada Ironhide, Rotf Warpath, Movieverse Skids), tho the new interpretations have sometimes taken on a 'greater life' of their own (Animated Prowl, Movieverse Ironhide, Movieverse Bumblebee, Movieverse Sam Witwicky, Beast Wars Megatron).

Suggested theory/excuse: Barring specific manifestations (Beast Wars Transformers, which are arguably maximals and not Autobots, which this thread specifically looks at), Transformers are mostly subject to death by compromise of the Spark Chamber, rather than compromise of the Spark itself.
Since the TFs are machines, they think Mathematically at massive speeds, so if their spark wasn't originally designed/intended to survive death, they can use internally focused impulses of energy to 'flash knead' its' vibration to do so (since the speed of thought is faster and more maneuverable than the speed of time, a Spark can arguably be 'willed' to return to the Allspark at a seconds' notice, no matter what year the Allspark is in at that moment, and select 'thoughts' and 'memories' or other bits of info can also be sent back and forth from one spark to another )or any Spark to itself [the basic premise of telepathy, past lives and Deja Vu]).
A spark itself (regardless of its presence within or without of a Spark Chamber) can still be affected by different phenomena, but not necessarily things that are of day-to-day availability to an Autobot Civilian (tho maybe to a Medical Bot or innovative scientist).
An example would be G1 Soundwaves voice, which could distort a spark and somehow 'starve it of itself' or collapse its' internal 'pulse' in on itself.Unicron could likely somehow 'remould sparks pulses' in a similar way, to cause the unswerving loyalty that he would need in a Herald of his (the loyalty would require to stem from identity, so programming a robot brain wouldn't do in stronger specimens, such as Jazz or Tigertron, who are arguably in touch with their Sparks).
More arguments:
That the Autobot simply dies as the writers lay out, with no other big deal.
In the early drafts of TF1 the Autobots had the Spark Chamber removed from the traditional chest area and placed into the abdomen (note that Tf1 Ratchet sends that Energon based energy dose to Bumblebees' hip!) but it (the Spark Chamber)is relocated to the chest halfway through redrafting TF1, and remains there during Rotf.
Because:
TF1 Frenzy loses his head but unless I'm mistaken the body Transforms into a Mobile phone and stows away in Mikaelas' Handbag? (I'm still confused by that scene) and yet, two years later, Rotf Frenzys' head is still radioactive.
Rotf Optimus Prime and Rotf Jetfire both take massive chest damage. Both don't die immediately, so the Spark can sustain itself but just needs the Spark chamber to keep it in one place.Jolt can potentially energize the two bodies whilst Jetfires' Energon is still fresh, alternatively maybe he temporarily rebonded the Energon on Jetfires' remains to Jetfires' Spark, which Optimus now had inside his own Energon field?
Tf1 Skorponok loses his tail, but it quickly reanimates. Rotf Skorponok appears to be crushed to death by Jetfire (we'll see if that's true in time) and the Pretender chick also seems to be crushed to death by Mikaela, so there's potential that Autobots will simply die from massive systems damage, tho anything short will simply allow regeneration. For a human, it's a matter of keep bashing and hope you've crumpled enough important systems to force a stem in the Energon flow and cancel out enough reroutes and therefore negate stasis lock..
Beast Wars Dinobot and Animated Prowl are two good examples of the Autobot dying to help the story.
These are just thoughts. I'm posting to have fun with a topic I like. I'm not demanding that folks agree. Please accept that I'm contributing for recreational reasons and not some kind of Spock complex.
