What's the more fun?
What's the more fun?

Assuming that you play with your figures what do you find the more fun to play with
the characters that appear on the screen?
the toys that aren't in the series, the sky's the limit on your adventures?
litte bit of both?
thanks

That said, non-show characters and repaints play a part in that. That, and I have a habit of repurposing such figures to suit my needs
P.S. Know I'm not the type who reads fanfics. Just making that clear.

I fiddle with the figures at the from of my shelves constantly though. I think it's their size and ease of transformation that make them more fun.
In the universe I conjure in my own head, every TF has a name, a backstory and a personality. Sometimes those change because I'm too lazy to write everything down.

Time storms, the Vok teaming up with the Oracle/Vector Sigma and Maximals and Predacons reverting to previous forms (i.e. TM2, TM, non-Transmetal etc. etc.) as time passes and the wake of the time storm reaches farther and farther into the future from what Tarantulas did (he destroyed the Ark!).
Ah, the stories we come up with in our heads, it's always fun

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I am that which is, which was, and is yet to come.
And you will know my name is MEGATRON when I lay my vengeance upon you!

As all of my figures are accessible, they all get played with (broadest sense of the word here).
And as Mkall said, they have backstories. Some of which can be seen in my photocomic!

So for me, I prefer characters that have actually appeared on screen. That said, I do make exceptions for really cool "non-canon" figs like DOTM Skyhammer.

Pretty much what Pryme said. Altough I sometimes can't resist the odd legion class figure to noodle around with every now and then

For Beast Wars I have a lot of non-show characters because damn it, Buzzclaw and Soundwave and Scavenger are so loveably hideous I can't help but keep them around.
For Prime I'm happy to have Dead End and soon Wildrider around to fill in the ranks of named Decepticons, given how often those guys get killed off after a one episode appearance. :/
For the movie lines, especially Revenge of the Fallen, I feel a lot of non-movie cons, like Lockdown (my personal favorite) are better figures than in-film characters like The Fallen.
It also strikes me as in character for just about any Decepticon/Predacon leader to keep a lot of anonymous henchmen around.
On the Autobot side of things... I buy Optimus Prime and any other Autobots I think look cool. Often there are a few in-show names, but the only real priority is aesthetics. The only time I've ever bought a full team of Autobots was for Prime, which is a combination of a small number of in-show characters, some good quality molds like Ratchet and Wheeljack, and the fact you can't order a case of Deluxes without at least one Bumblebee. They often end up horribly outnumbered by the Cons, but I'd say that's in character.
As for the canon.. again it varies. I generally make my own but with a few elements lifted from the shows/movies. Shockwave had a lot more dialogue before Optimus Prime completely failed to kill him in Chicago. Soundwave and Sideways had plenty of misadventures before they found Planet X.
As for the other part of the question, the figures I play with most are scout/basic sized, because I can keep those around my desk and on my computer case. I have Kreon Shockwave, Scorponok, and Galvatron at my desk, along with RotF scouts Brakedown and Skystalker to play with. My larger figures mostly stay in display and my masterpieces and exclusives all stay safely in their boxes.
Great thread, btw.

I enjoy while taking pictures of them. Sometimes doing silly things, cool things, re-make some scenes from the cartoon/comic/movie, etc.

As for whether they're characters from the show or not, I couldn't care less.
