I've only been a transformers collector for about a year or so, but I think it boils down to this: Firstly from the very beginning, transformers had differing continuites. Marvel comics, marvel uk, and the american and japanese cartoons, all showing certain characters thier own way. In most big franchise they have a 'brand standard' that all media most comply to. In transformers this seems to lead to alot of head canon, therefore, unlike say star wars, where the image of luke is very set, it isn't for optimus, everyone has thier personal image of him.
Secondly, transformers are complex (sometimes) puzzle toys. They're mostly well made and easy to take apart. the kind of mind which enjoys them, is the kind of mind that likes to see how things work, and therefore, improve upon it.

I think the unique and varied characters of the Transformers, and the investment in said characters by the fans have made Transformers a personal experience for us all. Like Star Wars before it, this franchise means so many different things to so many people, regardless of age or continuity preference. So when a mold or character that has been represented many times has a new design, sometimes it's easy to be reminded of that favorite character that never got his/her own toy, or a much-needed update on an existing one. I think that is the draw of customizing... to give that favorite (or simply long-overdue) character a chance to be represented in your collection...
...back in my day, you had one alt-mode. ONE! Articulation? why, if you had enough articulation to transform, you had plenty. And if you wanted more articulation, you know what you did about it? NOTHING. You transformed, stood there with your faceplate closed, and your optics sharp, just like everybody else who didn't have ball-jointed this, and swivel-jointed that. And when your were told to, you transformed and rolled out! ...And another thing...
