Work in progress: Alt. Ironhide

One of the other projects I started at the same time as Bludgeon:

I was just going to paint it and leave it at that, but after browsing through the tutorial forum here, I decided to try the simple shoulder modification and work on the upper legs, too. I had a bit of trouble getting a cut straight enough to remount knee guards and have them even, so I've decided to just attach them directly on the legs since the piece doesn't actually require rotation to transform to the truck mode. The knee guards are attached with sticky-tak for the moment; once everything's painted, I'll glue them on properly.

Wish me luck!

Finally got around to painting this thing.

Color scheme is pretty close to the cartoon model, especially considering the different body type. All the "robot reds" are uniform while all the "vehicle reds" are unchanged. I would like to have one uniform shade of red for the entire thing, but painting a red truck red isn't high on the priority list at the moment

That is the business! 8)
Actually, I really like the two reds - I've got the same thing on my Hot Rod repaint, and I think it adds more visual interest. As long as all the red exposed in vehicle mode is consistent with itself, the fact that the 'interior' red is a slightly different shade is no bad thing.

I agree with Ramrider, the two different shades of red in bot mode break him up a bit and make him more interesting to look at. Keeps all his parts from blending together.

Looks great.

Yeah, looking at it again this morning, I think it works pretty well with the two tones of red. Really makes it look like there's a G1 Ironhide in there with new parts on the outside.

Of course, not all the vehicle reds match up perfectly, but that's Hasbro's fault :)

I used the cut-away leg mod for Ironhide (same as Megatron), while Prime has his legs extended. Worked out nicely since, even though they're the same mold, Prime is still taller. Keeps the cartoon scale somewhat intact.

Typically, I don't like big insignias visible in the vehicle modes, but after seeing plenty of pick-up trucks roaming around with custom graphics, it doesn't seem too out-of-place on Ironhide. It discerns him from Prime in vehicle mode, too.
