While a bit less articulated, the AEC figures felt sturdier, solid, heavier, and of better quality overall (they also didn't skimp on paint apps, but that's a whole other subject!)than anything offered nowdays. Despite the lower level of articulation, those TFs still managed to look cool too, especially ones like E-Galvatron, E-Omega Supreme, and C-Optimus. The transformations were also a Hell of a lot simpler and didn't make one constantly feel like they were about to break the thing.

I for one would be willing to take that "step back" for those afore-mentioned attributes in my newer TFs.

But of course, that's just my opinion.

I agree. I like the sturdy figures from the AEC line, which is one of the reasons I like the TFC Excraver figure so much. It harkens back to those days.

Of course, AEC did have some problems too. Especially joints that popped off too easily (thinking of Mirage).

I think the Energon and Cybertron lines hit the sweet spot: they had more articulation and pose-ability than older figures, but they were chunkier, sturdier, and had simpler transformations than the newer figures.
