AUTOBOTS, ROLL OUT! SKYBOUND ANNOUNCES LINEUP OF AUTOBOTS TEAM IN DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON’S TRANSFORMERS #1
The Hugely Anticipated New Series Launches This October
LOS ANGELES 06/23/2023 — Today Skybound, in partnership with toy and game company Hasbro, announced the full lineup of Autobots team members that will appear in writer/artist powerhouse Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers, launching with issue #1 October 4, 2023.
Teasers of each character appeared on Skybound social channels this week, showcasing the all-star team of Optimus Prime, Ratchet, Cliffjumper, Arcee, and Wheeljack. Fans should stay tuned to Skybound social channels next week, as the Decepticon team will be unveiled daily.
In the recent surprise heard ‘round the world, Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici’s Void Rivals #1 launched the all-new shared “Energon Universe” with the surprise first appearance of iconic Transformers character Jetfire. The stealth launch introduced the historic new partnership between Hasbro and Skybound, with Transformers and G.I. Joe comics finding a new home with the publisher.
Transformers #1 (Lunar Code 0623IM805) begins an all-new era for the iconic Robots in Disguise from Daniel Warren Johnson (Extremity, Do a Powerbomb, DC’s Wonder Woman: Dead Earth) and colorist Mike Spicer (Stillwater, Murder Falcon). Optimus Prime was supposed to have led the Autobots to victory. Instead, the fate of Cybertron is unknown, and his allies have crash-landed far from home, alongside their enemies—the Decepticons. As these titanic forces renew their war on Earth, one thing is immediately clear: the planet will never be the same. New alliances are struck. Battle lines are redrawn. And humanity’s only hope for survival is Optimus Prime.
Transformers #1 (Lunar Code 0623IM805| $4.99) will be available at comic book shops and digital platforms including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

I was hoping they might put some lesser used characters front and center, instead of the same old crew, but at least Bumblebee is not in the starting lineup. Getting tired of him.
Curious about the Cons. Probably Megatron, Shockwave, Starscream, Soundwave and 1 more random well-known character.
It's still weird to see Ratchet with a white helmet and black crest instead of a red helmet and white crest in a comic.

Agreed. Conjures up memories of Dreamwave; when I saw Ratchet in Sunbow colors on a printed page, I had a bad feeling that someone at the helm just didn't get it. Show-accuracy is fine for the rest of the original Ark crew, but Ratchet and Prowl were iconic because of their Marvel characterization. There were much bigger problems in the first DW series, but that detail gave me a sense that this new TF Universe was going to crash and burn before its time, and that's not just hindsight bias.Rodimus Prime wrote:It's still weird to see Ratchet with a white helmet and black crest instead of a red helmet and white crest in a comic.
Here though, on the cover of a restart comic that just has to be different enough from IDW instead of bringing all of G1 back from the dead in an appeal to old fans who'd considered it to have been so for over a decade...could work. We'll see.

That all being said, I am so excited. The lack of TF comics lately has really felt like a hole in my life.

As long as they don't keep it slave to the G1 cartoon, or wings universe or whatever asinine thing they're calling it. Let it be its own thing, like IDW was.Bumblevivisector wrote:Agreed. Regardless, as a comic book fan, I'm really looking forward to it, especially after the Brian Ruckley schiffshow we got.

Man, I hear that! I've picked most of that nonsense up and even when you have it all together, it's damned slow going.
Looking forward to new creators.

i will read the wiki, just as I did for IDW2019. If just to keep up with anything interesting.

Kinda wish they used different designs.

Also, how long until Megatron shows up in some form? Furman made us wait an entire four issues in Infiltration, so let's call the over/under 5.5 issues with safer money on the under

1 thing I don't like is the writer proclaiming "Optimus Prime the savior of Earth." That part is the same old. Personally I would really love it if finally Ultra Magnus got to be the main character of an entire series. He's like Optimus, except more interesting. G1 Prime is basically a 2-note tune. Getting boring after 40 years.

And they gave away a panel exclusive Transformers ashcan! I love Mike Spicer's coloring but they really could sell black & white versions of DWJ's comic and I'd buy it.

Maybe they could kill off Cliffjumper every month only to have him resurrected by magic by the next month?!
'Oh my God, they killed Cliffy!' as South Park would have it.

The art was great, I'm really getting invested in the characters and the amount of Transformers love we're getting has me positively giddy. I love what they're doing with Skuxxoid, hopefully he can get a miniseries at some point. Overall I think this universe is exactly what Transformers needs right now and its nice to have a comic I can look forward to every month again.
Lastly, there was a three page preview for Daniel Warren Johnson's book and man, this might be the best Transformers has ever looked in comic form. The pages had me floored.

The first one I tracked down to Things From Another World Exclusive by Fred (Frederic Pham Chuong).
The second is art by Santa Fung, but I haven't found who the original seller is yet (neither Ebay listing is by them).
Any ideas on where to get the second one and/or has anyone spotted any other exclusives yet?
Posted by Fricknmaniac on August 29th, 2023 @ 8:04am CDT
So far I've found two confirmed (Stadium Comics and TFAW) and two potentially teased on Facebook (Big Time Collectibles (wouldn't ship until November at the earliest, though) and Singapore based Comic Grail Vault).
In the past I always waited to pick up the IDW incentives and exclusives, but this time around I think I'm going to try and get them all at launch if I can.

Francis Manapul!
Cliff Chiang!
Ryan Ottley! Probably my favorite of the covers not by DWJ so far.

Has anyone spotted any more exclusives? Usually I waited on any IDW exclusives, but given how hyped people are for this series, I'm being more proactive about getting them upfront, rather than waiting and trying to get them cheaper.
Hopefully this post will be approved, it's been almost a week since I first tried posting. I know, as a new member my posts need to be reviewed, but I've received no feedback, so I don't know if my posts are being rejected or have just yet to be approved.

This is the only one that sort of looks good, and I have to say the only part that looks good is the coloring aspect with the shading.
Otherwise, if these are "talent", eesh. I just like nothing about any of the art we have seen so far.

KRS Comics has two (one of which goes live in about half an hour), Transmissions podcast has one, and there are many more still to be revealed. I wish you good luck, they're going full 1990s (maybe worse) with the amount of variant covers for the first issue.Fricknmaniac wrote:So far I've found four different exclusive covers for #1. Two are currently live, Stadium Comics and Things From Another World. One is going live today (August 31st) for the Singapore based store Comic Grail Vault. And one is going live next Friday (September 8th) (two days earlier if you sign for their massively overpriced "subscription" service) from Big Time Collectibles.

The 4-page insides are just not... exciting? The covers featuring Starscream, however, intrigue.
The art style is more suited for organics than bots. Not that I expected anything else - it IS Daniel Warren Johnson's signature - and the layout is fantastic (except the physically illogical fall into the exhaust ports and reveal the rear of the Ark part... like, HOW!?). Johnson's artwork always reminded me of the French comic books I read back in my youth - Tintin, Asterix and the likes when I grew up in Montreal. Guest I'm still getting used to it for TF but it's not hard to get past this. For me that's better than the Marvel TF style that doesn't age well... even back in the late 80's... so I'm not complaining.

Launching a book with six figures is an accomplishment, but it's only a marketing one. The trick will be sustaining that level of interest. Still, it's a promising beginning.
