And target masters on their own? I guess I did always wanted Hasbro to make weapon packs for characters to wield.

Optimus looks alright his robot mode is great
Sideswipe looks fine
I hope firedrive comes with more to him cause $6 is a lot for just the robot
if you look at the back of optimus primes art you can see hound, wheeljack, sideswipe and ironhide.

what the f*ck?
In all seriousness though, these look alright, not really as "cybertronian" as I may like, but I can deal with it.

The truck mode though...

Sideswipe also looks pretty cool.
Don't think I like the "wear" effect very much though.

I was thinking the same thing, it's basically post-movie "futuristic" updates to the pre-movie cast. Not exactly the hover cars we were expecting. I suppose we could still see flying triangles, I think Warden mentioned wanting to do those once.
Highbrowseyebrows wrote:Im hoping those extra battle damage details are real cause ill pay 5 extra dollars for a better paint job
Warden said at Toy Fair that there wouldn't be stickers and they were going for something new and gritty with this line. Expect a lot of dry brushing and paint washes.
But the real news here is it seems like we might FINALLY get our Autobot Targetmasters, shame they probably wont come packed with their partners. Firedrive is Hasbro's new name for Firebolt, Hot Rod's Targetmaster partner in G1. And no, these are not the same as Takara Tomy's Legends Targetmasters, those had knees, these don't.
Also looks like they're doing the same numbering system they're doing with Studio Series. Battle Master Firedrive is WFC-S1, Deluxe Sideswipe is WFC-S10 and Optimus is WFC-S11. "S" probably stands for Seige, should be interesting to see if the numbers continue in the 2020 line with just the letter changed. I'm thinking S1-S3 are Battle Masters, S4-S6 are Legends, S7-S10 are Deluxe, S11 and S12 are Voyagers, and S13 and S14 are Leaders.

Sideswipe looks good but I already have Universe (2008) and I adore it.
Optimus, I want to like but something about his truck mode doesn’t sit right with me. Maybe in-hand images and not renders will look better.
The line looks promising, yet must they jump the prices up like they did with Studio Series?

It looks so very similar in terms of design, aesthetic, and engineering, but the details don't seem to match up quite with any of the Takara Targetmasters from Legends, not even Firebolt. It's very CLOSE to Firebolt, but with some aspects either remolded or new detailing added to the sculpt.
That Optimus Prime looks great...in robot mode. I think he will be my new definitive Optimus Prime for my Classics shelf (Sorry, Cloud Optimus Prime). I do wish he didn't come with all that "battle damage" deco, but I'll manage. Maybe there will be a special edition release with "clean" paint apps later on down the road. The alt mode is recognizable as Optimus Prime's G1 truck, but with some weird extras, like the stuff on his cab roof. It's not at all ideal, but as you don't see much of that "extra" stuff translated over into robot mode, it's acceptable. Now I'm hoping for a good G1 Voyager Megatron to match.
Sideswipe looks VERY good too, but I don't know if I want to start replacing my Classics figures with "Cybertronian" versions, with the exception of Optimus Prime, as stated above, because we've been waiting over a decade for one that looks this good in robot mode.
I'm perfectly happy to collect a bunch of those "Battle Masters" if they are at the $5-6 price point still. Looks like War for Cybertron: Siege will at least allow me to be a little choosey. It would be nice NOT to feel compelled to collect an entire line for character completeness for once.

Too bad that Takara doesn't do its own thing with the CHUG line anymore.. maybe they would have retooled Optimus Prime into a more cartoon-accurate truck. (Like with Powermaster and Ginrai.) But oh well.

100% new molds. They're much simpler than Takara Tomy's including lacking knees. Judging by the size compared to Sideswipe and Prime they're probably about the same size as a Decoy Armor.

I find it kinda amusing to have firing effect pieces on a targetmaster gun since I kinda already did a similar concept with my Firebolt custom a couple years ago.

What if the "War for Cybertron" trilogy is actually a continuation of the G1 cartoon story? E.g., it takes place after "The Rebirth"/Season 4. Cybertron is restored to its former glory, and now the Decepticons want it back more than ever. The fight has completely moved away from Earth, so now the Autobots and Decepticons are adopting more appropriately Cybertronian and battle-ready alt modes for their "new" battlefield. It makes sense for Optimus to be back, and perhaps some other G1 characters will be revived too in new forms (or they'll just side-step all of those deaths in the movie altogether). This first part, the "Siege," may be the Decepticon's initial first strike against the Autobots in the recently restored Cybertron.

BUT I do like them. Its not a no from me, but its a wait and see for the rest of the 1st wave. Two decent Autobots does not a good line make.
I also want to see something other than Season 1&2&Movie characters..

Me too. Oh me too. Because WAY too much characters get ignored. We got some in Titan Return and we got some Pretender love in PotP (plus Abobinus) but there's so much more characters to tap into. Also, why not bring back some of those Japan exclusive like Victory Saber?
Posted by Stormshot_Prime on July 13th, 2018 @ 4:43pm CDT
I’m afraid they’ll just make their earth altmodes slightly wonky and call it good at that. Come on Hasbro you’ve got the source material!

EDIT: Forgot to say it, no intrusive gimmicks on these guys! I like the idea of Targetmasters as a gimmick because it's not going to force awful transformations like PotP Starscream. I love it.

Carnivius_Prime wrote:Sideswipe's car form looks kinda neat but the robot mode is uninspired boring old blocky Sideswipe that I was already really tired of even back with my original G1 toy (I only kept it cos the Lambo mode) and looks extremely generic for an Autobot car robot.
It's a standard Sideswipe aka the king of generic designs and personality in the Transformers Franchise
There isn't really anything that anyone can do to make that design interesting. (Besides the missile pod that he sometimes has which is the only thing that makes Sideswipe standout among other red sport car Autobots)

Anyway, Sideswipe does look fun and so do Targetmasters. I'm all about that Ironhide design hiding in plain sight behind OP, I hope it's real.

You're talking about the illustration, or the toy itself? Because all I can't see it.

We'll see. I sure hope this line doesn't go the way of POTP, and be Hasbro only.

Any chance these use the same mold but modified to remove the articulation?

Sideswipe and optimus looks great to me, dig the new look on the vehicle. However, i am a bit concerned with the gritty rust effect, particularly because their last attempt at sqweeks makes it looks like poop smear instead on the actual toy. If they are using the same technique for those effect, those two won't look gritty, but look more like they just come back from poop battle.

I will also add that I'm intrigued by the return of the Targetmasters. Probably won't get Firedrive in particular, but I'm curious to see some of the other designs for them. I still think the Titan Masters are the best of the Master size class.

I know I do not agree with that, the arm kibble here is much much better than on the classics toy. That is the main flaw of that toy, otherwise I think it was a pretty awesome voyager prime. I do not know if this one will replace it yet.

Sideswipe is a definite, my boy finally. I've been waiting for him. (No I didn't want to hunt down the old classics one).
Prime I'm not sure about. On one hand, I would like a non-gimmick Prime (I have a combiner, a headmaster, a headmaster combiner, and an Evolution figure) but this guy kinda looks wonky.
Yay for Targetmasters!!!
I'm not sure how many of these I will get overall, as starting here I intend to get far more picky with them, but they look good so far.
I like the 5mm blast effects. I may give them to my minibots as small lightsaber like weapons.

Yeah, the arm kibble is much better on this new "Siege" Optimus Prime as compared to the Classics mold. I'd even say the Combiner Wars mold has more obtrusive panels on his arms than this. The other problem as I see it with the original Classics mold of Optimus Prime is that it's a bit undersized compared to many other Voyager figures. Classics Optimus Prime is particularly dwarfed by Universe 2008 Inferno and his mold-mates. (I try to keep them far away from "Classics" Optimus in my displays.)

I don't think I agree that the arm kibble is any worse, but the joint between the arm and the shoulder looks kind of questionable. the Takara TMs were great so I don't see anything wrong with hasbro's except the simplification of the knees and waist. As far as that shoulder to arm joint on Optimus, it looks to me like it's a similar design to the shoulder armor on Last Knight voyager Megatron. You can see there's a little slot on the top of the shoulder where, I'm guessing, the outer side panel of the shoulder can fold out on a pin so the arm ban get more movement. I think if that's how it works it should look fine.
Also I just want to say it again but I'm really excited for this Optimus Prime. No gimmicks, voyager size, isn't a Combiner torso with a pin head...
