How to Tell if your MPM-5 Barricade is a Knockoff, and What to Do Next

Posted by Qwan Apr 21, 2018 at 8:56pm CDT 118,651 views
A lot of people recently have been getting burned with knockoff versions of the newest Movie Masterpiece Transformer on the market, MPM-5 Barricade. Buying highly-desired figures like this, especially on sites like eBay with individual sellers, can lead to a definite risk of ending up with a counterfeit version no matter how careful you may be.

To help you identify if your own copy of Barricade is a pretender to the Movie Masterpiece throne, Seibertronian zhaobinis1 has you covered with a couple identification tips - plus a guide on how best to refund your purchase through eBay if you did receive a fake! They recommend not shipping the figure back as it's technically illegal to ship counterfeit items like this.

Here is how you can do to get a refund without shipping back the KO figure:

1) When receive your figure, click return.
2) Fill in reason as "KO" or "not authentic".
3) Take pictures of your KO figure. There are 2 places you can easily see that are proves of KO. 3.1) The "POLICE" print was misprinted on the trunk while it should be on the spoiler. This could have been fixed but you will still see marks on trunk. 3.2) In the crotch there are 2 C shaped parts that you won't see the opening, while on official figures you will. Basically KO put these parts on the wrong direction.
4) Do not ship it back, as it is illegal to ship inauthentic items. Wait a few days and ask Ebay to step in (there is a button for it).
5) An Ebay employee will be assigned to your case and usually they will ask you to DESTROY the figure and sign something to prove you did it. Then they will refund you at sellers cost.

As a visual aid to zhaobinis1's descriptions, we also have an image from D-Maximal Primal showing the misprinted "POLICE" decal (and its clumsy reapplication to the spoiler):

Best of luck to all you buyers out there - hopefully this guide can help keep you alert for counterfeits in your police-bot-acquiring efforts! And of course, our condolences to those who did receive a knockoff. If you have any thoughts or tips of your own to share, let us know in the Energon Pub forums. And as always, stay tuned to Seibertron.com for any more Transformers news and useful information!

Smh...

Ebay aint the damn police. They aint got no business asking you to destroy something. Id just call the seller out and send it right back to China. He might even send a refund and let you keep it that s**t probably cost him 5 bucks.

Well, I ordered a legit Barricade from HLJ. When it gets here, I'll compare with my KO, then decide which one I'm keeping, which one goes on eBay.

Cracks me up how even with shipping, Takara Barricade is cheaper than buying a Hasbro version.

.... eh... idk about that.... depends on where you shipping it... It'd be about a wash from me if I ordered it from TFSource https://www.tfsource.com/masterpiece/movie-masterpiece/mpm-05-barricade-hasbro/

Possibly give or take a few bucks... but then TFSource would ship it a lot faster.

effectively I'd imagine anyone getting him for less than JP list price should be very wary of KO potential. Which goes back to "if it's too good to be true, it probably is". Not that I really enjoy paying a premium to *make sure* mine is legit... but so be it.

What I posted is what happened to me. So Ebay will do that.

I just avoid buying Transformers (or any collectables) from China (Hong Kong and Taiwan included). The risk of getting a knock off is just too much, even when you try to avoid the auctions for items that are way underpriced (a sure sign your not getting an authentic product).

And I never said they wouldn't. I said they had no business making that request. I see it as an agenda. You really think some 50 year old Chinese toy dealer knows the difference between a in package KO barricade and a real one? The anti-KO crowd seems to be under the impression that these dealers are transformers experts. They just sell stuff for a living. Theres enough high quality KOs out there being marketed and sold as KOs for budget collectors. Im inclined to believe this is more of a case of mistaken identity than deceit. All the ebay dealer probally knows by word of mouth is where he can pick up a pallet of toys to flip for profit. I doubt he knows where they were assembled. Hell its probally the guy who sold him the pallet that lied. So e-bay needs to chill out with all the hate rethoric and remain neutral. Refund the money and stay out of the politics. I dont see walmart asking me to prove I destroyed a bad product to get my money back.

But Walmart also doesn't let you keep that bad product when they give you a refund, do they? From what I understand, it's legally not allowed to physically return the knockoff toy (admittedly I haven't looked into this - I'm just taking what I've heard at face value). So the only way to ensure that customers aren't abusing the refund system to get free stuff, since there's no way to actually retrieve the product, is to request that the counterfeit item be destroyed.

I agree it sounds extreme, but I can at least slightly see the reasoning here, and I don't see any way in which eBay is pushing any "hate rhetoric" or a political agenda here. They're just trying to refund customers who were mislead (by whom doesn't actually matter, they were still mislead), while doing their best to also prevent over-savvy people from abusing the system to get a refund and keep the item.

If people want official version pf you you shouldn’t be buying from amazon and eBay they should be buying from official stores bigbadtoystore, TFSource , https://www.manofactionfigures.com, and others buy from eBay and Amazon it’s fifty fifty chance it will be knock off then you will be spending 2 maybe 300 one for knock off and other official release of toy

destroy it? WTF no! its better to live with your mistake and just enjoy the figure than destroy a perfectly good figure. the only ones that would do this are takara elitists.

OK, day 3 of my ordeal, and the guy first offered me a $5 refund (HELL NO), and now he offered me a $20 refund and will not take it back since postage to China is so expensive. Still pissed

That is mega frustrating. Definitely sounds like it's time to get eBay to step in, hopefully that'll help straighten things out a bit.

Why not get a refund on the lower-quality, fake figure and then use that money to buy a legitimate one instead, like you intended in the first place? You don't have to be a Takara elitist to prefer having an official, better-quality-controlled, figure over an unreliable nobody's attempt at imitating the original.

For those keeping up: My MPM Barricade ordeal has ended. Seller finally surrendered to a full refund and return. But then, to my horror, I discovered that in the time between opening him and 24 hours later finding out he was a KO, I threw away the insert. :-( :-( :-( So the guy gave me a $30 refund out of $52 and told me to keep it.

At least when I get the real thing he'll have 2 weapons now. and I will keep the KO in alt mode most likely beside his real buddy. I'll probably get him from TFsource once Greatshot comes in stock, since Barry is already in stock.

Awwh no! At least that's a decent amount, not as good as a full refund but better than $5
I'm glad things mostly worked out, at least. Still sucks that you had to go through that whole ordeal though.

Just an FYI, if you don't mind the slow shipping option, you can get a Takara Barry from HLJ fo r almost 30 bucks less than the domestic online retailers. That's the route I went after discovering my stupid mistake. I still can't believe I didn't read the description.
