Thanks to Dengeki Hobby, we finally know what MP-38 Beast Wars Convoy (Legendary Supreme Commander Version) is and looks like. It turns out he is a gorgeous toy based redeco of Masterpiece Optimus Primal. Seriously, words cannot give these picures credit, they must be seen. While the beast mode might suffer simply because we are not used to seeing this colour on that show accurate beast mode sculpt, it makes all the exposed kibble a lot more tolerable and thematic. This also gives hope to Shockwave fans that Takara is willing to give toy specific decos. Also it now removes all logic from the MP numbering since this is the same character. It includes new accessories that are mainly callbacks to his original toy such as a brand new skull flail, a Double Blade, a weapon rack for attaching the Double Blade to the figure in either mode, and a Beast Mask based on the original toy's Mutant Head. That extra accessory to hold the two swords in either mode will make use of the mysterious port on his back meaning that the mold was designed to interact with this extra accessory all along. This deco does have a fictional connection since this is how Beast Convoy looked like in the Beast Wars II movie.

The figure's MSRP is 12960 Yen ($113,64) but it can currently be preordered for lower than that from Japanese retailers for the likes of $90 USD.

The mutant beast head attaches to the back of Primal's head. I'm pretty sure that's accurate to the original toy so that's fun.

Compared to the first MP release, this looks remarkably bland to me. Mutant head is a nice touch but nah.

It's a nice option, and a repaint that makes sense, but it would have been nice to sit a bit longer before releasing it. Still, this mold is so darn awesome that I might go on and buy it.

A Google translation of the Dengeki Hobby page makes it sound like this figure's deco is first and foremost meant to resemble the character's appearance in the movie, with the specific toy-based attributes added in thanks to the character's movie look using the toy's colors instead of the BW cartoon's colors (but kept the BW cartoon's exposed mouth and chestplate design).

This helps make the MP toy's name make a whole lot more sense since it was in that movie that he was referred to as a Legendary Supreme Commander.

The numbering is not odd at all if you think about it. In the main retail line, every retool got a new number, regardless of character, and apparently new accessories make them eligible as well. Compare:

MP-12 Lambor & MP-14 Alert
MP-17 Prowl, MP-18 Streak & MP-19 Smokescreen
MP-20 Wheeljack & MP-23 Exhaust
MP-22 Ultra Magnus & MP-31 Delta Magnus (new face plates and figurine)

And Starscream got two releases based on the same basic mold, yet got two numbers: MP-03 and MP-11.

The sub-numbering is a bit more random and probably impossible to figure out, but they have being more limited runs in common.

That said, can I say I called this one? ;;)

There's no logic to the numbering. You can find something, sure, but I'm pretty sure it just comes down to the arbitrary whim of someone for no really good reason every time.

Anyhow, I think this looks really awesome. Great toy in a fun deco with a bunch of new accessories. Totally in for it and I hope they do the same thing for Cheetor!

But Delta Magnus was a new character. He wasn't Ultra Magnus.

The problem there is Saberblade is actually right about the nature of the releases - Supreme Commander ver. is the only one breaking the "theme".

As for this figure, I was totally out on Beast Wars Masterpiece. This release, however, has me at least thinking about it.

Ugh... fine. I was mainly looking at retools and new accessories, and taking "new characters" out of the equation. True, the cassettes were the exception by being straight redecos, no retooling whatsoever, but aside from that...

I know its wrong to think this way, but I take serious glee in the fact that there is a particular set of militant 'compulsive' fans who only like a bit of G1, that will be going 7 types of crazy over the fact he has a number of his own. Karma I guess.

In all seriousness though, Im kind of sad about this as I cant justify a second purchase and I wouldve chosen the toy deco over the CGI model every time as I was never into the cartoon but loved the toy.

Another outlier:

MP-13B Soundblaster - Not an exclusive, not exactly a new character, though packaged with a new mold Ratbat and not a unique number. They didn't have to make MP-38 a unique number, they just felt like it.

Officially? There was no advertisement for the peg in any of MP-32's instructions or packaged feature pics.

So does anything with a peg hole that size. Plus rattrap doesnt even work well sicne that peg is only on onf of his arms, making him off centre. It wasnt made for him, thats just a theory fans came up with because they were puzzled and grasping for straws.

But now we actually know what its for, its for this extra gear. It was that all along. What happened is that Takara had 2 releases in mind but wanted to use the same mold for cost purposes.

Its like Power Ranger megazord toys, many are released with ports that appear useless and then a year later you realize its to go with a new toy that just got released.

A thought just occurred to me. If Takara were to eventually make a Masterpiece version of Burning Convoy from the mold and give a letter to one of the mold's two ID numbers, I'd imagine that they would choose to give "MP-38" a letter (like "MP-38B") instead of "MP-32", since it was this Legendary Supreme Commander version of the character who turned into Burning Convoy in the movie.

I'm not entirely sold on that being the original purpose. The original figure could have used weapon storage as well so why not include it then if that was the original purpose? Why use a blatantly obvious 5mm peg and require an extra part rather than better integrating the weapon storage as a feature of the figure like we've seen on other MPs? For that matter he still has that port on his arm that hasn't been officially explained (though the speculation is probably accurate) and probably wont be at this point, but it goes to show that Takara Tomy built things into the figure that they weren't sure how to utilize.

Looking over Primal's shoulder isn't what Rattrap did whenever he rode on Primal's robot mode back as a flying passenger. He instead always kept to the middle of Primal's back, looking over the backpack kibble located directly behind Primal's head, far above Primal's shoulders.
