Interview with Transformers / My Little Pony Crossover Creative Team

Posted by D-Maximal_Primal Apr 22, 2020 at 11:10am CDT 63,668 views
Over at the Hollywood Soapbox, the Soapbox crew got the chance to conduct an interview with the creative team for the upcoming Transformers / My Little Pony crossover event, which will run for 4 issues and, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, was set to come out next month. The creative team included in this round of interviews includes writers Ian Flynn and Sam Maggs, as well as artist Jack Lawrence.

You can check out the full interview by following the above link, and you can also read some snippets of the interview included below. Let us know what you think and let us know how excited you are for this crossover that will hopefully soon grace our comic book shelves!

Were you skeptical at first that My Little Pony and Transformers could come together for a comic book?

IAN FLYNN: Not skeptical, more like delightfully baffled. With a little bit of work and research, they came together surprisingly easily. It’s like mixing up your toy boxes and playing with everything.

SAM MAGGS: I thought the idea was both absolutely brilliant and absolutely bonkers. I pitched on it immediately.

.....

How difficult was it to have two artistic styles for this four-part series?

JACK LAWRENCE: I didn’t actually approach it as two artistic styles as such. It’s different characters as part of the same animated TV show like, say, Bobby interacting with Uni in the ’80s Dungeons & Dragons show. The two character types are built differently, but exist in the same world.

.....

What do you like about Twilight Sparkle as a character?

SAM MAGGS: I think I find Twilight Sparkle relatable, personally. She loves to read and learn and can get lost in books. But over the course of the series, she’s really come out of her shell, and that’s inspiring.

What do you think is the most appealing aspect of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series for its fans?

JACK LAWRENCE: I think everything about it is appealing. The characters and world designs are just so pleasing to the eye, which draws you in, but then it’s very, very funny at times — and the stories are really good. You don’t necessarily expect ‘epic’ from My Little Pony, but that’s what you get!

The real question, with IDW survive the virus outbreak to be able to put the books out.

I 100% agree! The same with any other major franchise (like Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr. Who, Marvel, DC, and etc) if you don't like a TV show, movie, video game, comic, novel, song, stage play, or whatever media don't watch, play, listen, or read it.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE SOMETHING DON'T BUY IT! I MEAN NOBODY IS FORCING YOU TO BUY OR LIKE THIS COMIC AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN DON'T BUY IT! AND FOR GOD'S SAKE STOP RUINING THE FUN FOR PEOPLE WHO DO LIKE IT!

Yeah, and it's not like they're doing a crossover with any of the pre-FIM My Little Pony stuff. They chose the good one.

;)

After reading issue 1 I can safely say that this is not the book for me.

Still better than New Avengers/Transformers though.

That's not much of a scale. Reading the back of a Reese Peanut Butter Cup package is better than reading Avengers/Transformers.

Anything is better than the latter!

I find this one to be very strictly made for kids and it's probably good at that. Maybe if I was into ponies I could find more to like, but I'm not. Some of the art is totally adorable, which also places this series above TF vs Visionaries and many other crossover books.

Loving Spike's fanboying over Grimlock. He's big into comic books and superheroes so he's the perfect one to be in this situation. Otherwise, Rainbow Dash would be a good fit too, but more in a complementing way since she too is full of confidence like Grimlock, as opposed to how Spike contrasts to Grimlock's confidence. Either way, this is very smartly-written.

Another 5 page preview for you today is from the My Little Poney Transformers crossover. This one seems particularly fun with an Avengers portal scene reference. You can see it below.

Now, see, if this had been made back in the 1980s, Applejack would be sitting in a corner, cowering in fear, begging for her life in a passive, submissive manner, wanting some big strong hero to come and rescue her.

But here, with this comic drawing inspiration from the Friendship is Magic series, AJ is strong-willed, independent, taking charge of the situation, and anything but a pushover. She's angry, frustrated, and determined to get those low-down, cotton-pickin' varmints offa her property! She ain't goin' down witout a fight, and'll die trying to defend her family's honor and legacy.

It's honestly not any different from Transformers fans knowing what they know.

Where've you been for the last decade? They made a good MLP series that garnered a huge following of fans just like any other decent, intelligent cartoon series would. The fact that it starred characters that were horses and a predominately female cast was completely irrelevant to how good it was.

This isn't the 1980s anymore where cartoons have to be segregated by gender.

At what point did I bring gender into it? And honestly, I didn't know about any new cartoons or that it was a mostly female cast. Frankly I don't care.

It's more about the overall weirdness of the entire package of MLP plus Transformers, plus the fact that you yourself had such minutia stored in your little grey cells to be withdrawn at a moment's notice but hobbies are hobbies.

As for my last decade, I've spent the last decade or so traying to keep people from dying on my shift (because OMG! The paperwork!), which leads to drinking, burnout, and exhaustion on a daily basis while simultaneously working on a Master's degree with the purpose of giving myself a more prominent role in keeping people from dying on my shift.
So...pretty much a masochistic stupor. Does that help?
