good eye! hasbro would have wanted to show some of the transformers in their different states, so he had them twice in some of the paintings. in the dinobots, there were some of the same effects.

Thanks very much to seibertron.com for posting this link, my father's paintings were all over the place but he was never really credited except for the few who found his signature.

Well, if the dinos are dino to halfway to robot in 3 pics it doesnt count. The 2 Hot rod cenario is the only one wit a straight robot and straight vehicle with no transitioners. But thanks for the compliment!

Things like these really make me wish Hasbro/Takara did a proper art book with the original G1 art.

Hi Phil,

Welcome to Seibertron. and here is your standard allergy warning:

SEIBERTRON CONTAINS NUTS

ahem, that said and done. Thanks for joining this thread about your Fathers work. Despite the lack of credit on the packaging, I hope he realizes how much his works have meant to many of the fans around the world.

I hope the painting makes it's way to a deserving collector.

It may sound liek a stupid question, but who's the weird-looking guy with blue arms and red legs above Metroplex?

If Phil Mangiat did those box arts, there seems to be a variant in the G1 Japanese box art. The USA version had Jetfire firing a missile while the JP version had Devastar fighting the Dinobots and Blitzwing in the place of Jetfire. Was that also a Mangiat work?

That would be Broadside

Thou Phil would be the best to tell us if the Japanese release was also done by his father, the artist is Jeffrey Mangiat, not his son Phil.

That's Broadside? No wonder I didn't recognize him. He barely looks like himself.

Yeppers, check the slipstream trailing behind him to his other modes. It would seem when this piece was made, they were still working on the pre-release version of Broadside before the major revisions were made, same as the Carnage in C-minor animators.

Poor Broadside, between this, his comic and cartoon appearances, he must have some huge identity issues.

I think he would make more money if he distributed the print as a poster and made thousands of them, along with any other art they have. I know I would buy a few in the price range of $15.

Again Phil may have a better vantage point to answer this but I would personally think that Hasbro might have an issue if they were to sell reproductions. However there is nothing stopping them from selling the original as they are planning with this auction.

that issue has come up on more than a few occasions. the problem is who owns the rights to the art. while my father has the original, the image itself i think, is still owned by hasbro which would be a breach of copyright or whatever else it is.
outside of transformers he has done work on thundercats, gobots, starcom, and a ton more of the 80's media. more recently he has done gi joe, books, games, etc. lots of popular mechanics.

and, you are right, it would be great to have posters of his work, but i dont know if it is possible.

thanks for the comment though.

Phil

Phil, is there a website or anywhere online that has a collection of your Dad's works where we can see more of his work over the years?

i know he has a portfolio through his agent, Mendola, the link is as follows:

http://www.mendolaart.com/Jeffrey_Mangiat

The problem is that after the computer boom in the 90's many clients no longer wanted hand painted/ airbrushed work. Luckily my father was learning the art programs with me during my years in high school, so the transition for him was a little easier than most. The art you will see here reflects most of his more recent work that is both hand painted, and computer rendered on his Mac.

Wow, he did some ROC pieces. I might need to alter that COBRA base image for a desktop image.

Thanks for the link.
