What these guys need is some bad 1980's box fiction to explain what they are. How about this:
The Autobot experment to create more powerful Targetmasters by reformatting Mini-Spies results in creation of the Targetroids! These powerful weapons are spark-bonded to their partner, resulting weapon and robot who act and think as one... but the Decepticons have stolen the technology and created their own Targetroids!
So these are not Optimus and Megatron, etc. They are Mini-Spies who were bonded to their partners so much they even resemble them!

They are being sold by different names than what is on the box. Weird. Last minute change?
