Tomy to Buy Two More Toy Companies in Japan?

Posted by Hotrod Apr 2, 2007 at 5:37pm CDT 17,368 views
Back in February we reported that Tomy announced that the company cut its annual net profit forecast by two-thirds. Then we reported that Tomy sold 14% of it shares to Texas Pacific Group. This put the company in great position for further growth. Now it looks like Tomy is ready to grow more. A report at Toy News Magazine says that the company is looking to buy two Japanese rivals due to a declining domestic market. Read the full report at Toy News Magazine.

Sounds like the start of Electronic Arts all over again...now if they decided to take on Bandai...well...that'd just be -very- interesting.

Tomy has always been around, but lately they've just been exploding!

Hope this leads to better TFs

Yeah, they'd release Gundams with half-naked sexually exploited underage girls.

If Tomy buys Bandai, then that'll be awesome because my brother in law works there and gets tons of free stuff all the time. Too bad I'm not a Gundam fan though...

People, be reasonable. Tomy can't buy out Bandai anytime soon. The companies that the article hints at Tomy purchasing are definitely lower on the totem pole than that, or catering to niche markets. Companies like Kaiyodo, Konami's toy branch, maybe something like Medicom. Not Bandai. Bandai rules the toy market. They're the number one company that Tomy has to worry about competing with the most. If anything, Bandai would be more inclined to gobble up Tomy, but Tomy's #2, so that's probably not going to happen for a while either.

And there are simply too many things wrong with being hopeful about a Jetfire reissue to warrant bringing up.

Well of course Tomy can't get Bandai, I was only referring to what someone else had posted, and I made a funny. That's all.

I was never referring to you!

I don't generally single out "offending" posters whenever I make that sort of reply. You assumed, and you know what happens when you assume...

Tomy won't be buying Badai.
Bandai is too stable and big.

Tomy has always been around, but lately they've just been exploding!

The story, which we originally reported on, stems from poor profit margins on Tomy's part, which they put down to the popularity in Computer / Video games, rather than them growing. It's interesting that Tomy target both Mattel and Hasbro as rival companies, when Hasbro / TakaraTomy work together on Transformers.

Awesome! So this means that now they won't be making any of whatever toy line the company they buy makes, just like they did with Transformers when they bought Takara.

This may be a stupid ?, but what toys does Tomy make?
I think they made the Starriors line and maybe ZOIDS.
But what do they make that makes them so successful?

I think they are trying to buy out all the other toy companies, then cease production of those toylines so we'll be forced to buy Thomas the Tank Engine and other delights from Tomy.

Ah thanks. I guess I just never looked at the company that made some of those toys.
I am happy with a lot of those products, having a 6 year old that I like to buy toys for. And she does like the Littlest Pet Shop.
The Thomas stuff, for the most part, is good quality too.

I only hope they don't put people out of work while acquiring new holdings.
