Transformers Legacy Evolution Core Sludge, Slug and Soundblaster out in Canada + Reviews

The next phase of the Transformers Legacy line is taking shape in North America. The core class is slowly being released through Amazon in the US and in Canada, this first wave has been found at Walmart in Ottawa (by CanPrime). It contains Sludge, Slug and Soundblaster. We have reviews from our community below for these toys.

chuckdawg1999 wrote:Finishing up the Wave 01 Core Class figures from Legacy Evolution we have Soundblaster and Sludge. Soundblaster looks great but is a bit looser in some areas than Soundwave and really doesn't offer anything new. Sludge is much better in hand than stock photos have made it look, but you still have to get used to how the figure works below the waist. Once you understand all that Sludge has to do, forming the torso and upper legs of Volcanicus, you start to appreciate the figure more. Overall, both figures are fine but I would pick up Sludge first just to have the next piece of the Volcanicus puzzle.

chuckdawg1999 wrote:This is an interesting way to start the Evolution of Legacy. Slug, more commonly known as Slag to long-time fans, is a really fun figure. Transformation is simple but has a few fun steps that leave you satisfied. While this can never replace the SS86 leader, Slug makes for a fun desk toy.

I like how Prowl looks, I think the face and the thighs should have been lankier to match the Animated aesthetic more, but I really do actually like him.

The day I no longer read the word "Slag" as Slug's name will be a good day.
angtre wrote:I really, really like the Junkions, especially the tow truck.

As for "Animated" Prowl, the only major letdown is the absence of the samurai armor/sidecar. His face reminds me more Smokescreen (G1) btw.

I suspect we may get a Selects "Samurai" voyager class figure down the line with the added armor

I'm not interested in Dinoking, and I have the POTP Volcanicus team already, so this Core team is a hard pass. But, why Hasbro? It's like you're begging KO companies to upscale these... don't make it easy for them.
I guess Hasbro has more faith in a Core class Volcanicus being a success (since it's still the G1 Dinobots in some form) than they have in a Core class Monstructor or Dinoking, and so are using Volcanicus to test the waters to see if it would be successful enough to warrent a Monstructor and/or Dinoking happening later.

I don't think they are testing waters, that Dinoking or Monstructor (whichever) will be happening. Probably as a boxset through fan channels. The core class is just to give parents a cheaper option on shelves for known characters, that's why the put Dinobots there. The combining gimmick is just an extra collect them all aspect at that level for kids/parents. Where we (the fans) come in is with the redecos that will emerge in fan channels.

I think there is a collector use case, which is a budget-friendly counter to 3P Legends scale. These mostly aren't as nice as the old Legends, but I like a smaller scale and simpler transformation set of G1 guys. I'm hopeful to have a good season 1/2 cast to have alongside the Ark even if it's not really to scale, because it should still be passable in a certain kind of display.

The reason I didn't really consider the whole 3p thing as a huge factor was the lack of scale. But I assumed that 3p did things to scale at that class size, do they? Like, is Grimlock bigger than Prime and Prime bigger than Prowl and Prowl bigger than BB, ect?

I'm still reeling from PotP Volcanicus being such an overbalanced, floppy mess. I can't bring myself to go for the Legacy Core dinobots, especially when the 86 Studio Series leader figures are so awesome.

I still think it's more of an appeal to parents buying for kids (or kids on a budget) and any collector appeal is a happy accident (as Bob Ross would say).

Chefatron put up reviews of animated prowl and crosscut

I'm still getting prowl and happy with the robot mode. Stars kinda suck tho, so does bike mode. Back wings could be better. I'll be happy to add this to my collection tho

In the category of this hardly ever happens, my Hot Shot arrived missing a part, one of the yellow flaps that complete the hood and roof of car mode. It didn't break off and wasn't rattling in the box, it was just never attached. Amazon is sending me a replacement and I don't have to send the damaged one back which is good, since I would be afraid of them trying to sell it as a Warehouse Deal. Other than that it's a fun figure with an interesting transformation. It does suffer from the lack of Jolt, it just feels like something is missing.

Better than suffering from compromised designs were Jolt included. Look at Pointblank.

Pointblank got lots of flack for being severely flawed. The fact that it could have been a voyager to be "complete", but was trimmed down to a deluxe didn't help. Lack of spoiler shield, barebone targetmaster, no panels to cover the back of the legs, limited articulations, lack of painted details, and so on.

By itself, it's not a bad toy. But it could have been much, much more.

Oh well, I'll just have to buy the upgrade kits. I already started with the legs panels. All that remain is the spoiler shield at the very least.

I forgot to mention, the new deluxe packaging is not what we were shown, the figure is not 95% covered by the tray, and it sits like the core and voyager class figures do with the paper ties.

I finally saw a Legacy Blitzwing in the wild last night at Walmart…
Just 1.

Although I don’t think this means anything in terms of improving distribution…
I went to a Target that I normally don’t go to and it literally had 5 different TF’s on all pegs and shelves, 7 TOTAL:

1 SS86 Kup
1 SS86 SS
1 Cyberverse Snarl
1 Cyberverse Wheeljack (1 step changer?)
3 Cyberverse 3 pks of OP, Bee, and Cheetor

And yes, I checked end caps, looked for extra aisles of clearance toys…
Just so pathetic…

Christmas was three weeks ago, toy sections have been wiped out all over the place. What do you expect?

Target is starting to do their clearance and reset of the whole toy section. This is basically the worst time of year to expect something, but may be turned around quite quickly once each store resets. Its just a guessing game on what that will be for your particular store.

Also being down to 1 SS86 Kup is a good thing, that was one of the more consistent peg warmers. My store still has 4.

So, I kinda got a brainstorm to propose for Legacy, related to G2.

My proposition is to give us a G1 Landfill as a double targetmaster, to go with Scoop from T30 as a Targetmaster. Obviously a Quickmix would be needed to, but he is not essential to what I am about to propose. A new Scoop also wouldn't be a terrible idea either, to be discussed again below.

Now, once we have Landfill, we need a G2 repaint with a new head as Dirtbag, to go with the Adventure Roadblock that was repainted from Scoop. Alternatively, if a new Scoop was done too, they could design him to be reversed at the torso to have the proper Roadblock chest and also allow him to have the proper head design.

Both Landfill and a reversed Scoop torso would be accurate to the G2 designs. Thus, we could get 2/3 of the Autobot double targetmasters, and we could get the 2 G2 Autorollers out of the deal too.

And there would be further alternative repaint options, chief among them giving us a new Autocrusher and Autostinger to go with the Beast wars II figures coming out lately, which might also lead to new figures of Autojetter and Autolauncher and thus repaints of them as the unreleased G2 versions of those 2 characters. And then there is also the G2 General Optimus and Sargent Hound as well.

In short, lots of fun!

Doesn't help explain much when they have looked like that all year long though. At least everyone I've ever been to.

I'm not sure what the OP was, but in my area, Target at least had some Legacy Wave 2, and the most recent SS. They have also cleared most inventory out for a new years reset. Whereas Walmart never got anything beyond Legacy Wave 1, and the Beast Wave. Also tons of Velocitron deluxes, and SSBB Arcee/Ironhide clogging up pegs. Even at clearance prices they aren't moving hardly at all. Not a good look for Walmart to be full of old product.

Which most recent SS? Because I was told the deluxe class toys had not changed from 6 months ago. If you found crosshairs, that would be news

Designer Notes on Legacy Pointblank revealed that Peacemaker's inclusion forced some simplification for budget reasons:

Mark Maher wrote: This time around since I lead the design of this guy I thought it was essential to add in Peacemaker. I soon realized how cost challenging it was to include a target master at a Deluxe scale and pricepoint.

btw Wouldn't have been the first time an Armada Hot Shot toy was tweaked:
