No clue yet... An older figure whose name was Crankcase, was a decepticon triggercon, but I don't recall that he and Seaspray had a common past, possibly just a random pairing like in case of Rambohide-Bludgeon.

I saw the little flippers and just said "Awwwww!!!" pretty loudly in a public computer lab. But I feel better knowing somebody else is onboard with them.

Pretty damned sweet.
Looks good for Classics/Universe, too. *Crosses fingers that he's in the line*

I'm relieved that he's only a Voyager and not an Ultra like first though .... I love the flippers though, that's so silly 80s-toonish its awesome. And a 'scuba mask' is a perfect extension of the original, who had just a head with optics and an ventilator as opposed to an actual face.
Bonus points for his turbines being able to fold back into a underwater propulsion pack... actually I think he did that in the cartoon once.
I'm also happy to see they're continuing the 'rivals' angle in profiles that they started with the latest movie figures. It adds a nice depth and background to the franchise again.
I'm sure there will be a G1 cartoon repaint, by Takara if not Hasbro themselves, but despite originally thinking about holding out, now I think he looks fine as he is. The more 'realistic' colors of white and blue work in this case.
'Crankstart' may not necessarily be an old model of car. It could just be a reference to a purpose, if he's a combat medic or engineer or such. We'll have to wait and see!

Dear lord, this is awesome. And he will look even cooler with ROTF Scattershot on his back in boat mode. Anti-air boat FTW!

I'm not sold on him, but I'm not against it either. First thing I thought when I saw him was the colors are wrong (too me), the head doesn't look right at all, and the hands looked like claws. Mind you that was when we first saw pictures.
Now that I see him in a much more up close picture gallery, I feel almost the same. Head doesn't appeal to me, open hands kinda look like claws, guns gotta plug into hole in arm behind the hands, movie style legs, color pallet... all of these things make me think it's not Seaspray. That being said, I do like the figure and just because he doesn't look like Joe Transformer doesn't mean he isn't Joe Transformer (see 98% of ROTF). There are just things I would change based on my tastes.
I won't need to get the first one because he'll warm the shelf pretty hard for 8 months and I can wait until it goes on sale or I see the better re-deco. I mean sure we like it, but kids are going to look at it and not give it two thoughts then move right along to something else. We all loved Powerglide, Silverbold and Onslaught, but they are still warming shelves here in my neck of the woods so I don't see Seaspray being any different.
I'm guessing we'll get a few repaints out of this. Walmart exclusive G1 deco, Takara better G1 Deco, and Decepticon Shortround. You all know this will happen... don't act like it won't, because it will. The proof is in the pudding so to speak.
Now if only Yizhi can get his hands on that Bruticus Combiner... then my engine will turn over.
Lastly, did anyone else find that video painful to watch? Like, that figure looks like it might take one minute WCS, but that kid took FOREVER. Gah' my head still wants to go nova.

This guy looks like he came straight out of the old cybertron line. I pray they aren't mixing the two lines, ROTF and Universe. I'd buy a universe classic over ROTF any day..

In terms of design, we don't know if they're mixing the two together.
In terms of distribution and packaging, yes, they're mixing them together. The new packaging will cover a good portion of the toylines.

I'm going to put this guy in the maybe pile. Powerglide stayed that way for a long time too.
