I think it's being left open for mature debate.

I don't think a unique name justifies "exclusive".
Also, what about store exclusives that end up being available online?

DavidT wrote:Figures are different enough when any part of them is different whether it be color, mold, name, etc. Target's Deep Space Movie Starscream is limited in numbers and all he has is some slightly different colors.

Getter's asking what's the bare-minimum that crosses the line into new figure territory.
Seems again that name doesn't justify your point.
Mold is obvious.
If you're talking color, I'd assume there'd have to be a certain percentage that is considerably different.
Imo, D.S.SS's colors/finish are quite a bit different than the original.

The Name of something can absolutely make it an exclusive. Kind of like Copyrights. Certain companies can only use certain names

The bare minimum can be absolutely anything. Like in Hotwheels, they have light chrome, medium chrome, and dark chrome variations on some of the same cars. In reality, it's up to each individual to determine on their own what the minimum requirement to be different is.

Store exclusive that make it online are still store exclusives. Such as D.S. Starscream. He's only available at Target but you can also get him at Target online. He is still coming from the same source. If BBTS gets him, that just means they purchased him like you or I would and are re-selling him like you or I would on Ebay

Are you the Color Police? Are you the person who can tell everyone the minimum percentage that a color can be different.....No. It's all on individual preference. You may think D.S. Starscream is different enough but others may not. Just like with Botcon & Henkei T.C., Some may think he's too close to the same color and other may not. That doesn't change the fact that Botcon T.C. IS an Exclusive

That's what I'm trying to define. To you BotCon Thundercracker and Henkei Thundercracker are as different as Brave max and Fort Max, So does that mean to you that RID Octane has two figures in the line from Hasbro because the wheel screws representing the hubcap were remolded between waves? Where does the limit end?

I was thinking in terms of 2 products being extremely similar...
In which case, a different name doesn't mean much.

I may be wrong, but I thought part of this discussion was to try and see if people could come up with some sort of general standard to sort out when a figure can be considered different from another.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is true, but doesn't get us any where.

Easy... Did I throw out a percentage and claim that that is THE standard????
I do think D.S.SS is fairly different because of the colors, that's why I said "imo"...
If your contribution to all of this is "It's all in the eye of the beholder", that's fine.
But relax a little bit, it's just a discussion.

Like I said, It depends on a person's own personal preference. One person may consider that enough difference and others may not. Of course it would help if the the figure had different packaging or something along with the change in screws. Like Short Pipes and Long Pipes on Optimus, Tru had short and Encore has long. One has the autobot sticker while the other is tampo'd

Just for some reason this particular figure is pretty controversial. I will admit I have no idea about the other botcon figs, if they were as argued about or not, simply because I had virtually no interest in them. But then again, what I collect in the transformers range is pretty narrow. Aside of the vintage G1 jets, I would like to collect a set of Seekers, of a mold I like, to completion. Thus far in the past 4 years that has never happend. The two lines I really liked, Classics and Titaniums went belly up and the final figure ends up an exclusive to a convention I can't get to. However, unlike the Thundercracker of Botcon, I feel I can actually get Titanium Skywarp.

I think the subject in quesiton is more of a debate on yay or nay exclusives, when or where they should be used.
