While looking through the Paypal site, my husband came across something strange.

It said
Once you reach your sending limit, you have to upgrade your unverified account, to a verified account.

What does this mean?? I don't want a verified account!

I must admit that I am. I was always told that having an unverified Paypal account was "Good Enough".

Basically, to become verified, you tell PayPal one of your bank account numbers, PayPal makes two small deposits, and you comfirm with PayPal how much was deposited so PayPal knows you own the account. It doesn't cost anything to "upgrade".

They must have changed their policy, though... used to be that you didn't have to verify your account after a certain time.

Thank you for the info.

Do you HAVE to upgrade? Do they really stop letting you use their system after you send a certain amount of money if you don't upgrade?

I personally don't know, since I verified soon after I signed up.

I'm guessing you only use PayPal with your credit card, then? (Otherwise there's no reason not to Verify your account.)

Yes, we do use a credit card. Which is why we never bothered to verify the account.

1.) Confirm your address, if you haven't done so. (This will raise the limit, it worked for me.)

2.) The Credit Card/Debit Card costs money to use and PayPal passes those charges onto you, the consumer to make up for it. (Part of the reason for the limit.)

3.) Verifying your account is a necessity these days, for security among other things. (You can still use your Credit Card without having to use the Bank Account for transactions.)

And to confirm, yes, once the spending/sending/whatever limit is reached, you cannot make a payment through PayPal. You can receive payments, etc but that's it.

Also, if you wish to receive PayPal payments made with a Credit Card (like you use in your purchases) from other people like a buyer on eBay, then you'll need to upgrade (which is free) to a Premier Account. Now, here's the pros and cons of that:

Pros:

After sixty days of service as a Premier Account, you'll receive a PayPal Debit Card absolutely free. (So if you receive money, there's no more waiting time as it transfers to your bank account, or waiting for them to send you a check to cash. You can just debit it right out of the account with the card. Also, every purchase you make with the PayPal Debit Card will actually give you 1.5% cashback.)

You'll be able to send and receive all types of payments that PayPal allows. (E-Checks, Credit Cards, Debit Cards, etc.)

No limits.

Cons:

Receiving payments will charge you 2.9% + $.30 on the whole amount. (This will automatically be deducted from the money you receive, so if you wish to avoid it, add it to the shipping and handling fee. And you could consider it a handling fee, you're providing a service, they're paying for it. I fail to see how this is a bad thing.)

You can figure out exactly how much PayPal will deduct from a payment using this calculator: http://www.ppcalc.com/ (NOTE: They are not affiliated with PayPal, but they are accurate down to the exact penny. So no more guess work, folks!)

Hope this helps.

I was wondering, does Paypal deduct fees from EVERY amount of money you receive when you have a Premier account? Like, my brother sends me $20 through Paypal because I bought presents for my family and he owes me "his half" of the presents. Would Paypal deduct 88¢ for that? Or are the fees only applicable when someone pays using a credit or debit card?

I was a bit confused about all of that when I decided to finally start selling things on ebay recently. I decided not to list "Paypal accepted" because I don't have a Premier account, and don't want to upgrade it just to unload some of my stuff. :???:

Every amount received. No matter the payment source. (Credit Card, Debit Card, E-Check, PayPal Funding)

That's the price you pay to be able to receive all types of payments. Google Checkout charges no fee to receive a payment (of any type) but I'm not sure if you can do personal sending like PayPal allows.

I'd note that you don't need a Premier account to accept money through PayPal funding or an E-Check, since I've received both with a free account (including some from the UK, so you can accept international monies too).

However, I'm not entirely sure about debit or credit cards. I think a Premier account only comes into play if someone pays you *directly* with a credit card, instead of funneling through a PayPal account (i.e. PayPal draws from a debit/credit card, then pays out from the account itself). I don't have personal experience with that, though.

I hate to hijack this thread... (sorry Susinko)

I have a question about eBay auctions and PayPal...

Let's say you win an auction (and you know the seller's unscrupulous and if you send the money, chances are you're not gonna see your item) if you don't send the payment and the seller puts in for a non-paying bidder thing, etc... can PayPal take the money from your account to pay for it without your authorization, or no?

If not, what happens? Negative for sure, but what else happens?

You get a unpaid item strike. You dont have to pay- they can't force you to...no matter what. If you get too many strikes though- your account gets suspended.

Ah. Hmm. Can eBay make you pay for the seller's lost fees, or is it just considered a loss?

And thank you.

I wish... once I paid $50 of listing fees for a front page auction- I only got the final value fee back, since some non payer won the auction. You can offer to pay listing fees to avoid getting negged, etc- but they cant force you to.

No biggie... just PM me if you need help with one auction in particular. Ive had bidders PM me that their account was stolen, etc... some of them I believe and others I dont.

I had to file unpaid item disputes for three of my eight ebay auctions that I had running a month ago. One user isn't registered anymore, and the other two are sorted out now. One finally sent payment after almost a month, and the other made up some story about their nephew using their computer and bidding on stuff on ebay. The latter got an unpaid item strike against them, and ebay refunded my final value fee. The (non-)bidder offered to reimburse me for the fees, but I declined since ebay would do that regardless (because of the outcome of the item dispute).

Will they alert you if they do so? Do they charge fees when you use a credit card after you upgrade?

I would like to note that although my card DOES act like a credit card, it is acutally a debt card connected to my bank account. So it takes the money out of my checking when I use it. Does that make any difference?

Thank you all so much for helping me. My husband signed up for it and I'm trying to (desperatly) learn about it as quick as I can!

I don't know anything about paypal but I'm intrigued because the local ebay doesn't give me much options and most international ebay wants a paypal account.. SO if someone canhead me off in the right direction i'd be very grateful.. First thing is there a detailed guide about paypal anywhere on this site or other sites? I'd appreciate a link.. Also do I need a credit card to open a paypal account?

Basically, you dont need a credit card to open PayPal, but it is an option to fund your PayPal account. The other is connecting a bank account to it, and then transfer funds into the PayPal from your bank. My bank takes 3-4 business days to transfer money, so that is kind of a hassle. I dont use a credit card via paypal, I dont have one.

As far as guide, just go to paypal's website. It has plenty of help topics and so forth. help

You do realize that you don't have to transfer the funds from your bank account to PayPal before making a payment, right? They can instantly and directly debit it from your account like it was a credit/debit card.

Unless you put the money into your PayPal account for a reason (like accruing interest, etc).

Premier account: I believe you get charged a percentage of each amount of money that you receive. It is not reversible; you can't go back to having a personal account after "upgrading" to a premier account.
