autobot from the ground up

Postby OdeeanRDeathshead » Tue Sep 28, 2004 8:01 am

This is a project I have been working on paper with for some months now. The general planning stage is finished and the precision work is beginning. If I am doing it right, then it should be obvious who this is in a month or so. For now heres a peek at todays work.
Image

I am trying to do something that will up the ante so to speak for my work. I am sick of doing things that can't be shared. If I am going to the trouble of making something look good I want to be able to make at least a few copies.

I do not think this will be a fast project but I will document each step. I have used autocad here to do my plans because it makes the real work later much easier. There is nothing like being able to print out a plan for any given side without redrawing it.

My vote's for upper leg with a ratcheting knee or hip, depending on the orientation :)

Man, you're a whiz with the 3-d Autocad, ever try Pro-E?

Do you work with autocad on a profesional basis (meaning do you work in an office with a paycheck) or is this some incredibly developed hobby?

I work with a little of the 3-d environments in Autocad but we mainly 2-d site layouts, contouring, etc little to no mechanicles though.

the only thing I do on a profetional basis is move boxes from point a to b and pick up other peoples garbage  . Its surprising how many other people I work with have some usefull talent, I often ask them for help if I get stuck.

Do you have any degrees in cad?

The job pays well, and the job market is always open for cad technicians.

I took a class in CAD, and boy did I suck at that. If you're good at something like that, then you're a friggin' genious in my book.

then a genius I might just be. I am the cad guru of my office any time someone is missing tools, something won't work, the plotter's broken, genral I'm too lazy to spend time looking for the answers online myself so I'll ask you instead stuff.

I'm practically an IT tech for the office though i try to avoid messing with the computers if at all possible unless it's something minor.

but ya plotting is my fortee along with lineweight control, production standards....need i go on. I know almost evry plotting control function available like the scar on the back of my hand.

Was thinking of taking a class for a degree to possibly get a raise but Austin Community College won't let me test out of the class and I've already proven i know more than half the staff. Just don't feel like wasting the money or time.

Edit: for those that don't know I'm a civil engineering, Architectural cad technician and i get to do the occasional survey now and then also.

okay done my bragging for the month, got my fix, I'm happy

I should ask you how to solve my problem then, but I don't want to turn this thread into a technicle discussion on 3d modeling. Some things are actually a lot easier to do than model, thats why many things are still protoyped in clay (eg car bodies). I was up to 4am thismorning trying get a surface to look how I could draw it on paper in about 1 minute :x .

I have been put off the idea of doing design work for a living. The employment prospects of such individuals is not a all its cracked up to be. My friend is a guru at it and works designing furniture for an auto milling machine but he gets paid less than me (one of the reasons he also works a second job in a grocery store).

Looks cool! Amazing in many sences, how many hours did you use to build those designs if I may ask ?

So the search goes on! We know it's an autobot, a car, and well.. thats all I suppose :P

that suspiciously looks a lot like the beastmode leg of one of the dinobots... I could of course be wrong... but the similarity between this part and one of Slag`s dinomode legs is just so striking to me....

ooh ooh ooh, pick me, pick me!

I see a, a fire truck....no a sailboat  !
guess I'll have to settle for a MTMTE Bumblebee.
The design looks familiar to the wing section on a MTMTE Bumblebee
I like it! what ever it is

well OD, sorry again. But really I'm uber excited to see this finished. I've tried to do my own MTMTE Bumblebee and pretty much failed. I saw Crazy Steve's done and it looked good but still, not the flair that it needed.
have you figured out how to do the body with out making look so bulbous? mine looked like a giant oval with legs  ah well.

Motto: "Do not consider the wars of the future, instead consider a future without war."
Weapon: Twin Shock-Concussion Missiles
You could try using Don's design from War Within I. I don't remember if there is a clear picture of the bot mode though.

Added fists and cavity for them, pluss did another part that the chest/cab rotates on. The fists I did on autocad are more detailed than I will be able to make in reality, but they still look good.

I cant wait to start on this. I am thinking of making it inside out so to speak. i may sculpt a mold directly from wood so I can get many casts. I am also considering using aluminium for the mold, but if I do go that way It will be hell to do. The up side would be almost unlimited casts. I think that using any kind of flexible mold for something that needs to maintain rigit points for its transformation is a mistake.
