That's a good question. I'd like to know the answer to this as well. Also, is Transformers one of the biggest toy franchises based on numbers alone (as opposed to profits, popularity, etc.)?

Toys are probably around 3000 to 4000 I guess.

Storywise you'd be looking at trillions.

Yeah, for so many toys the sheer number of characters is even more astounding.

The Hub alone probably had trillions of transformers, I can't imgaine how many there would be all together.

This is one of those tricky questions that we will probably never get a real answer from, for I bet not even Hasbro or Takara/Tomy know the true number of figures they have released.

Does this question mean how many molds have been released? Because that would be a much lower number than actual Characters that have been released, which again would be far lower than actual toys that have been released.

Example: G1 Grapple
Was released in G1, retooled for Inferno and Artfire (?) then the subsequent re-releases of those figures...
How many do we count that as???

This is doing my head in...

lets see:
Heroic, stoic good guy leader.
Evil, scheming, a bit mad badguy leader.
Young, plucky underdog hero.
Traitorous coward 2nd in command.
Worryingly violent goodguy.
Really stupid henchman robot.
Good guy who can fly.
Bad guy who gets trashed a lot.
The dinosaur.

that makes about 10 probably, as there's always some sort of mix/remix of these characters.
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn and any Webdiver toys.

But then do you count the re-issues of the same character? Do you count the same character in a different figure? ie: Jazz and Actiomaster Jazz???
