So, I've reading the interviews on the new cartoon and saw the promo art for the Autobots. And I must say that I don't like the direction where this is going.

So, I'd like to hear ideas from other people on how to create a "propper" cartoon series.


I'd go about it like this:


Background
4 million years ago there was a really badass war on Cybertron and various transformer colonies that escalated all over the universe. In one major battle there were two massive fleets of spaceships in Earth's solarsystem duking it out. The flagships of both fleets (the Ark and Nemesis), both got downed while fighting in Earth's orbit. Other ships crashed on other planets in our solar system. However both fleets withdrew after a prolonged battle.


Setup
Both Autobots and Decepticons have holdings on Cybertron and other colonies. Their respective populations are well beyond trillions. Charr, Paradron and a few other worlds are amongst these colonies.

The Autobots were initially led by a council of elders (of which both Xaaron and Alpha Trion were members). However this council was eventualy disbanded and Optimus Prime was put in charge. The Decepticons were led by losely allied Decepticon Warlords (with Megatron having the strongest army).

All transformers from the past comics and cartoons are present in the story in one way or another.


The series
The series starts when a (human) scientific expedition finds the wreck of a Decepticon assault frigate. This frigate however still had a operational repair system. Once inside the vessel the expeditions finds a stasislocked Soundwave in the captains chair, but they accidently trigger the repair system and Soundwave wakes up.

Soundwave and his newly awakend Decepticons capture the scientific expedition and question them. Soundwave recognizes that Earth could be a good base of operations to restore the Decepticon empire if it was destroyed during the original war 4 million years ago.

Soundwave eventually sends out a coded transmission accross Earth to trigger any other repair systems in crashed Decepticon ships. This message is received by the Ark and Nemesis and both ships start a repair cycle (Soundwave didn't know that the Autobots had cracked the Decepticon transmission codes prior to the battle).

So, the story starts with both factions waking up and scoping Earth. The Decepticons don't know that the Autobots are also awake (although it will become appearant later into the story).

A major plot point would be to contact Cybertron again, but they find that it became uninhabitable during the war. However both Autobot and Decepticon factions still exist and are fighting the war to this day.

Both Nemesis and Ark have vast armies of TF's in stasis, these TF's are gradually woken up as the battle escalates.


Important Characters
Optimus Prime and Megatron:
These guys are leaders of their respective factions (you know the drill). Although both of them have been assumed to be dead for a long time, so they lost their positions in their respective factions. But both of them will eventually regain their previous standinging (Megatron will have to fight for it).

Prowl, Jazz, Starscream and Soundwave:
Ranking officers, each of them commanded a ship and crew of their own. They show up during the first episodes of the series.

Ultra Magnus:
Official leader the Autobots. He's Optimus Prime's brother and took his place after the Ark disappeared. He shows up pretty late (probably seaon 2).

Shockwave:
A Decepticon warlord, he took Megatron's holdings and founded his own empire.

Scorponok, Straxus, Thunderwing, Deszarus and Overlord:
Decepticon Warlords, they lead the Decepticons and team up to fight the Autobots.

Fortress Maximus, Xaaron, Alpha Trion, Star Saber and Dai Atlas:
Leader figures to the Autobots.

Grimlock:
Grimlock also crashed during the initial battle, but the repair system of his cruiser malfunctioned and scanned various fossils surrounding his ship. All his troops have animal/dino altmodes as a result. Grimlock shows up pretty late into the first season.
