Leave it to Dead Metal to have the word 'Pronz' in his signature.

Massively Multiplayer Online. WoW, Guild Wars, those are MMOs.

Oh OK, so why would NASa be interested in making one? After all they do space stuff.

Please tell me Star Wars isn't the first thing you think of when you hear NASA? Space okay, but NASA?
It will be about being an astronaut. It will be about going into space realistically.
Like, no light speed or hyperspace, no gravity on board ships that don't rotate, no sound in space, and certainly no aliens or other planets.
For instance, did you know there's no up or down in space? There's no gravity so there's no direction of up or down. Up is whatever you see when you tilt your head in that direction, and down is whatever you see beyond your feet in that direction.
What do liquids do in space? They either collect into one big ball or lots of little balls.
You will not freeze when you go into space without a suit. You can, in fact, survive a brief period in vacuum. The human blood vessels are actually able to contain your boiling blood (which isn't actually boiling just moving as if it was because there's no pressure upon it). If you are in view of the sun when you go into space, you will get a horrible sunburn in a matter of moments. Only if you're in shadow away from it will you freeze.
And last but not least, NEVER hold your breath in space. Your lungs will either explode or all the air will rush out at once, destroying your throat. Anytime you see something where someone holds their breath in space (Cowboy Bebop and Hitchhiker's Guide spring readily to mind), it's wrong. Why? Because the human body is actually used to a hell of a lot of pressure. 1 atmosphere of solid air pressure to be exact. How many tons of air is that? How much pressure would that be? Imagine all that pressure in your fragile little human lungs, without the same amount of pressure outside them. POW!!!!
Instead, let all your breath out, and go out into vacuum with nothing in your lungs. You can survive only so long like that. Then, long before you die of other things, you will black out. Then, still long before you die, your brain will begin to lose oxygen and become more and more damaged. If they manage to retrieve your body before the radiation from the sun fries you, and they revive you, you'll be severely retarded from the brain damage.
Those are just a few things you might be able to expect in this game.

Going into space in real life would be awesome, but in a game, it's boring now. You can't base an MMO on preparing to launch, then orbiting the planet for a while. Collecting data is for real life. Not for videogames. If you want a space MMO to sell, it needs aliens. It needs other planets. That's what games are for. Things you can't do for real.

Thyunda wrote:Plus, just 'cause it's NASA making it doesn't mean it has to be space. Unless that news post that I can't read says it is. Could be a clone of WoW. You could really be assuming a lot from it.
NASA's Request for Information (RFI) on how to create a NASA-based massively multiplayer online game that is educational and cool is due soon.

No. That's stupid.
Haven't you ever heard of Microsoft Flight Simulator? Haven't you ever heard of Sim City?
I'm sorry, but you must be very sheltered or very young. People will not be bored "staying in one place" because they are busy adjusting millions of controls in their suits at all times, not just a few buttons and joysticks.
Some people also want to think in video games. Not everything has to be a cartoon.
I for one would love a real-life NASA Simulator. Why? Because I'm an aspiring science fiction writer. And since I think Star Wars is for children, I guess the only option open to me is real life. There's Star Trek, but it's not realistic either.![]()
I want to know what it's like to go in space, because to me that is way more exciting than a bunch stupid pew! pew! pew! Pretend laser battles!!!!!111

Laser battles suck. I have written one or two sci-fi's. They're not very good. But, I try. I don't understand why people like Star Wars. Just looks to me like a bunch of idiots firing lights at each other, then pulling out lightbars and whacking each other with them. I like the universe of Star Wars, because there is so much there. I like variety. I get bored easily in games if there's say, three characters to play as, or if there is only about four cities to visit in an RPG, or only twelve cars in a racing game. I hate a lack of variety.

They have a lot of people working for NASA. A lot of people.

Yes. They also have cleaners. How annoyed would you be if your character ended up as a cleaner?
