If I remember correctly, the reason Optimus was made blue, was because they said that red didnt "film well", or didnt look right on a big screen or some lame excuse. But it seems red works fine for any other bot they decide should be red; new Drift, Dino and Hot Rod to name a few.

They said that back in 2007 when cameras were less advanced this problem has been fixed for Dotm and has not been an issue since.
It's no longer a problem the first actual red transformers we got in these movies were Sentinel and Dino there was rampage in rotf but most of his screen time was in robot mode so no filming issues there.
So it wasn't an excuse it used to be a real problem.

Unless, of course, you're not a die-hard fan. Which probably at least 90% of the movie-goers aren't.

Rodimus Prime wrote:As you pointed out, Hot Rod was in the '86 movie, which was very popular with those who were kids at the time. He's a G1 character, even more so than most of the others, as after G1 the name "Hot Rod" was seldom if ever used. Hasbro preferred "Rodimus." In every continuity since, he was "Rodimus." So if a fan wants "Hot Rod" in Bayverse, then they must at least have average knowledge of G1, which means they must know about the comics as well as the cartoon. If a certain fan is someone who was around then, like some of us geezers on these boards, then that fan definitely knows of the comics. That is the single most asinine comment in this entire thread. And that's hard to do, considering some of the arguments that go on in here. But thank you for reminding me where your head actually is when it comes to Bayverse. I started to think you may be able to have a reasonable conversation with other people. My bad.
Did I miss something, I dont see what doesnt make sense about that comment. The 80s TF movie was super popular amongst kids (its the reason many of us are here on the boards, I am sure) while the Marvel TF comics were not read as much. They were also primarily in the UK right? And the series proved unpopular by the end that the runs were very limited to the point where the most expensive Marvel TF issues are the last ones and not he earliest ones.
So yeah, I am pretty sure that many hot rod fans out there who were hoping to see him in the movies had not read the Marvel UK comics.
Completely disagree about knowing about the comics. I didn't know there were comics until the '90's and I was 5 when Transformers first premiered and saw the movie in theaters. It wasn't until the Internet and TFwiki that I learned about the comic backstories of the various characters on their bio pages. And being in the States that was also when I learned there was an additional Marvel UK continuity. Not everyone who grew up watching the cartoon read comic books.
As for wanting Hot Rod in the live action films, having knowledge of the G1 movie and cartoon and Hasbro licensing I figure Hasbro likely has been using the name Rodimus until now either because it had issues getting the trademark for Hot Rod or because Hot Rod himself only appeared in a few episodes of the cartoon (not counting the movie which even now does not air on TV in the multi part G2 TV version between seasons 2 and 3 on Discovery Kids) so younger fans and collectors are more familiar with the Rodimus name.
So what I'm saying is I originally only knew about Hot Rod because of the '86 movie and not the comics, I don't think I'm an anomaly, and I think it's silly to argue about who knew what when and how and why and from where. Now my head hurts.

The actual "excuse" (which was and still is true) is that red is hard to capture on film (not digital, film) without looking orange. If you try to film something that's red using a film camera, it will tend to look orange unless you're very careful about lighting conditions and what not. I assume that, from DotM onwards, they've used digital cameras as opposed to film to combat that problem.

I'm fairly certain Bay is filming in digital 3D.

Exactly what I said: Bay has most likely been using digital since DotM, explaining the increase in characters colored red since then.

The official TF5 Instagram is at it again! After a solid week of character reveals, they've shared another digital mock-up: Crosshairs! The Age of Extinction Self-loving Braggart Autobot returns in The Last Knight, and it appears that he is relatively unchanged compared to his previous appearance. Time will tell if his ego has changed as much as his robot mode has, but for now, check out Crosshairs below with his glorious car-kibble cape flapping in the breeze!

Gosh I hate this character so much. Even more so than the Twins. Actually none of the Autobots AoE introduced I liked, but Crosshairs was like a 12-year-old's OC.

So I guess in terms of changes, there's... absolutely nothing.
Ah well, it was a pretty decent design anyway even if I don't like the bayformer aesthetic. If ain't broke...

Eh, there's a change or two. Aside from likely extremely subtle changes in surface detail, he seems to have lights and stuff inside his trenchcoart, and he now has a moustache that I don't really remember him having, or at least the appearance of one via clever shading (along with his face being made a little more visually appealing on the whole).

Oh, look. It's Neo.
I have no problem with the character, it's neither here nor there. Sqweeks, however, will be the biggest waste of time and CG in the film. The time and space devoted to that monstrosity could be used to introduce or develop actual characters. What a shame.

That makes sense. But yeah, as you said; very subtle - not really noticeable. Wonder if he has a different alt mode.

I like that they've found a way to give the robots something that resembles actual faces now, 4 or especially 5 movies in. This is what their faces should have looked like from the get-go, instead of the insectoid monstrosities we started out with.

Glad he's back. I liked the 3 new bots from AoE, and Crosshairs was someone I liked. Plus the Trenchcoat was a neat design

Your still stuck get action one cartoon those bots had to much human look in there faces to smooth not enough sharp edges plus teeth didn't help much how many Aline movies have you saw that aliens have humanoid faces unless there trying to blend in robots in disguise alien from another transform into earth vehicles that's disguise but robots from another planet in robot mode that have human faces not much of disguise either you look at them there still alien menacing robots from another planet.,
Think people will befriend deception if they had humanoid face won't matter anything that is bigger than human that kill them with one step they will be afraid human face or no face what does it matter if alien robot have human faces this new type of transformers didn't hear no complaints about beast machines and beast wars silver lot with cat bot like face not humanoid, tidal wave, predacons, transformers robots in disguise all deceptions have animal and insect faces no complaints there new series new look robots are made to look realistic not human cartoon looking giant bots big boring and blocky whit alien robots look like who skinned human faces off and wear them as masks to look more friendly because of there size

Crosshairs is the only returning AOE Autobot in this film besides Optimus to have the same vehicle mode as last time the only things new is a new paint pattern on his sides, a new spoiler and some vents on his hood.
No drastic changes like Bee, Drift and Hound.

He always had the face stuff just hard to see due to lighting but otherwise his face is exactly the same as before he does have new googles though.

Yes. Now go to your room and don't play with yourself.

Squeeks is an actual character too just because you don't like him doesn't mean he is any less of a character then say Bee or Ratchet.
And this is why new things like Alpha Bravo because some adults who were kids 30-20 years ago want exactly the same thing as how they felt as a kid.
When I was a kid and probably same with all of us we did not watch Transformers as kids because we wanted amazing stories or characters we wanted to watch robots shoot, fight and Transform and don't lie kids don't really care for those things until they start to become teenagers.
Squeeks is something kids like and Bumblebee can't be the kids idol forever they need other characters too like Smokescreen from Prime and Sideswipe from the new RID.

I understand where he is coming from, to me Squeeks just seems like another wasted "gimmick" character. And of course we watched Transformers when we were kids because they shot at each other and fought, not the stories so much. Thats why most of us are here, I was 6 in 1984 and fell in love with Sunbow G1 Transformers.
