Expose me to more transformers

Postby DarkMassacre » Sun Mar 23, 2008 2:37 pm

I consider myself a Tranformers fan, I really like the TF universe (or should I say, multiverse), but I haven't been exposed to much of it to be quite honest. My first TF series was Beast Wars which I hold in incredibly high regard, and the next was Beast Machines. I don't like it as much as I used to, some the the stuff about organics on Cybertron bugs me though I can accept it, but it's still a good enough series. I watched all of the G1 cartoons, including the 1986 movie some time ago. The cartoon was okay... though nothing I'll watch over and over. Transformers: The Movie was fantastic, I love that one. I've also seen the 2007 movie which I thought was pretty good. Anyway, I digress. That's all I've seen though. I haven't read any of the comics or really seen any of the other shows so if I could get some recommendations of what to read or what to watch, that'd be great.

Welcome to Seibertron.

Someone else'll be along shortly to utter the trademark tag line.

Anyway, if you've dealt with G1, BW/BM and the new movie, I'd say you've sampled the best of Transformers. PERSONALLY, I didn't like the Unicron Trilogy (Armada, Energon, Cybertron), or the Robots In Disguise filler series, and wouldn't recommend them myself. It depends how much you like anime.

All I'd suggest now is to get into some of the comics. Dreamwave's short-lived comic run is a fairly good place to start, and then IDW's stuff.

But which ones you ought to be exposed to are down to you really. As I say, stay away from the AEC lines if you don't deal with Anime well (like myself), but obviously if you do, they're open to you. That isn't to say that you have to like Anime to like those series, but I find it helps.

Enjoy your stay a Seibertron.com.

I like G1 and Beast Wars best, too. Armada isn't bad, if you get over the repetitive plot (find Mini-cons to the exclusion of all else). It has some good toys. I don't care for Energon (too much powerlinking, and the toys don't meet my expectations except for the basic Omnibots). Cybertron is better, although for a younger audience. RID (Robots in Disguise) is great for a laugh. Advanced designs and good anime style, but definitely a comedy. Haven't read the comics or seen the "Animated Series" yet.

I'd recommend the Marvel Comics series as well as the IDW comics.

You can eithyer try hunting down the loose ones or the hardcover graphic novels.

War WIthin (from IDW) is pretty awesome, although there are some conflicts in it with the old Sunbow cartoons. Same with the Marvel stuff, but both both are based off the old G1 characters.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll hit up the Marvel years and IDW. I might watch the AEC and perhaps RID as I've got nothing to lose, and the fact that they're anime doesn't bother me, I love anime. I found Teletraan 1 a couple of weeks ago, but thanks anyway Dead Metal, it has some very interesting stuff. I also hear of Timelines: Dawn of Futures Past, but that was BotCon exclusive wasn't it? I've searched everywhere for it.

The Transformer's Collector's club store has at least the 2005 and 2007 Botcon exclsuive comics, I forget about the 2006 one.

IDW did at least one graphic novel re-release of the Marvel comics. The one I have is called Generations.

Oh, and back in the day Marvel did what they called "comic digets" that have a few comics and some profiles in the same book, I know for a fact they have one that features the original 3 or 4 part opening series.
