Given that a sizeable percentage of Americans treat his every word as gospel (including things that contradict those he said the day before) his words and deeds do matter very greatly.
Note this is a critisism of Trump rather than voting republican and is a call to not vote for more game show hosts in future.

The largest critisism of the republicans surely must be over the limited financial support individual people received compared to the mass corporate bailouts. This will have contributed to a higher infection spread as people were not able to stay home without facing financial ruin. There is little to suggest sadly that democrats would have fared better in this regard. I can't cite any examples but on a more local level I'm sure there are examples of good and bad mayors, governors etc from both parties.

But when Trump was issuing a travel ban early on against China, he was called a "racist" by the Dems. Trump's administration is still not sending out PPE or when it does, sends out defective PPE. And the government is totally a shipping clerk. It has entire agencies devoted to shipping things out. Most notably fema.

Trump "downplaying" hasn't stopped. There's still people who think covid is a hoax because of Trump and his followers. Trump's been congratulating himself for over a month, when he didn't think we'd get over 60,000 deaths. Now we're over 100,000. There's even a news story going around about the 15 women who believed Trump and their governor about it being safe to go out, and now all of them have Covid-19.

Trump pitched an unproven treatment for it, now it turns out that it actually increases the risk for death and serious complications from Covid-19.

Trump dismantled the part of the government that was responsible for protecting us from an outbreak specifically from China. We used to have doctors in China monitoring them for new virus outbreaks.

Coumo dropped the ball in New York. It got bad. Real bad. Now it's getting bad in Arizona and Texas and Florida. Obviously no one learned the lesson from Coumo and New York.

I am not sure what mayor of what city shipped sick old people to nursing homes. Other than the fact that people tend to send old people to nursing homes because they don't want to bother or can't afford to take care of them themselves. The outbreak that started in Washington state and killed a giant chunk of people at one nursing home here was started because an employee was sick, couldn't get someone to cover her shift, and had to go to work anyway. That was the first significant outbreak in the US.

The China travel ban wasn't racist, but it was useless. It was put in place after cases were already confirmed in the US, and needed to be put in place before. A travel ban should be to prevent something, you can't prevent it if it's already here.

Are you implying that "we" think the virus spontaneously appeared in a Chinese? Come on, we know about the bat thing. But so far, it's a typical Chinese cultural thing to eat anything that move. The wet markets, where animals are raised and slaughtered in the most cruel and insalubre fashion is a typical Chinese cultural thing.

Then, add on top of that the Chinese government who is way too proud to take responsibility and hide crucial facts from everybody in order to "save face".

There is nothing wrong into calling a virus by it's region of origin. Only racists associate a country with a race. Especially if it's the main race of a whole continent.

China and Japan have a long history of hating each other. Japan did absolutely horrible things to Chinese and Koren prisoners during WW2.

It's not to say their messages are unwelcome and I'd far sooner see the ones supportive of BLM than in opposition to. Hopefully they'll put their statements into practice.

I think this current moment is showing that those two are linked. A company with diverse representation from marginalized communities can't be committed to their employees but silent about their struggles. Some organizations, including websites in varies geek fandoms, have seen mass quiting or other actions to protest failures to speak out.

But more to your point, it's much easier to have your PR team put out flowery copy than make the institutional reforms to begin to repair long-standing structural inequalities. Larger companies like Hasbro have explicit diversity pledges and internal campaigns to support their workforce, but everyone can -- and should -- be doing more.

Diversity hire is the road to Hell paved with good intentions. Best solution is always to hide the applicant's race and gender and focus only on COMPETENCE.

Racist practices will not fix racism.

Most of the ones I've seen get the most hate are putting money into BLM or related groups (like the ones paying bail for protesters). Granted, Itch.io raised more money than several corporations put together with their indie games bundle. Target (the high class walmart) is also immediately raising all wages to $15 an hour, but that has more to do with Covid. Target also donated after their store was looted. Not because the store was looted, but because the manager on duty denied service to the protesters, but Target has always donated to communities. I won't argue that they're a great corporation though.

I don't find the offensive joke not funny because it's literally older than I am, and I've heard it so many times directed at every Asian country that it's just not funny.

Now, something funny (not funny haha) is Takeuchi Naoko came to an American convention once. Just once. She was treated so poorly, she refuses to come to America again. I believe her husband, Togashi Yoshihiro (Mangaka of Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter) has been here since, but she won't come apparently.

I read your post earlier and I wanted to take some time to think of a response. I don't like speaking off the cuff, I like to consider my words before I use them. I was drafting my response in my head while I was browsing through the news and now I feel like all that time was wasted because I saw something that encapsulated everything wrong with it in a single article.

Just in case you dont want to read it, this is essentially a public release from WotC explaining how their depictions of orcs and drow have been culturally insensitive and they're going to change things to do better. This is a FANTASY GAME. The humans are just humans. The elves are just elves. The dwarves are just dwarves. And the orcs are just orcs. This is why the public collectively groans every time a big corperation decides to hop on board the bandwagon, because eventually it turns to the customers, the hobbyists, or just the fans and tell us that our hobby, which for so long was just fine, is now bad and now it has to change. And if you're against that change, well that makes you bad too.

They just did the same thing with Magic the Gathering. A game about monsters and magic, factions, guilds, and alliances, warfare and conquest across different dimensions and planes, and now they're purging their collections of anything that could ever be remotely misconstrued as racist or problematic. Cards like Crusade, which in a deck of white creatures(Mostly knights, soldiers, and priests) gives them more attack and defense. Because of the cultural implications, it's not only being banned but removed from any further prints and recalled from retail sales. This is insanity.

Several people earlier made a joke about Prowl being left in the image Hasbro put out because we all expected that he would be removed. There are still people calling for him to be removed from that image if you look at Hasbro's social media, no matter what platform. And what's next, are they going to pull Prowl from retail sales? Just tell any store that has Prowl on the shelves to either return or trash them. How about removing the character from the upcoming cartoon? Why not pull all the older cartoons and release an edited "SPECIAL EDITION" with no Prowl in it. You know, like the soviets used to do with people that disappeared in the middle of the night.

THIS is why people don't want corperate entities to get involved. I don't care about celebrities or athletes, they're people, they can do what they want. Businesses exist to provide a product or service and EVERY SINGLE TIME this comes up it ends one of two ways: Either they pay lip service and they get accused of not doing enough or they go the other extreme and start destroying and sanitizing their entire business lest they be branded the next problematic entity, even though the action of doing so is just going to be taken as evidence that they were already a problematic entity.

We have some real **** problems in this world. Forget police, lets call it athoritarian overreach and abuse as a whole so we can cover law enforcement, courts, judges, and everyone else that falls under that umbrella. We have class disparities in this world that leave people **** starving when we could be doing more to help boost their infrastructure and quality of life. Don't even have to leave the country for that, we could start with our own homeless populations. But instead we get **** THIS. Orcs are racist. Drow are racist. I'm sure if they pull their head out of their ass long enough to remember the Duergar, THEY'LL be racist. Trading cards are racist. Transformers are racist. I am so **** DONE with this whole thing.

You want to have some kind of discussion and change you need to start with THIS. And I'm sorry if I'm not coming off as my normal, more reserved and eloquent self but right now I am **** apoplectic with rage. You want to fight for equal civil rights, I **** promise you this isn't helping, because it's making people like me look at the whole movement and say to hell with it. Dungeons and Dragons has NOTHING to do with police brutality. Magic the Gathering has NOTHING to do with criminal injustice in the court system. Transformers has NOTHING to do with wealth disparity in marginalized communities. But the people **** BENT on finding racism in EVERYTHING will find it whereever they can and then shame those people into submission.

If you somehow think that I'm going to be swayed or guilted into joining your cause because you've found a way to impact my hobbies, the things I use to temporarily escape this and recharge to come back and fight the good fight, then you're wrong. And I don't mean to direct this at you personally. But this ranks right up there with someone, because I happen to play a trading card game, walking up to me and screaming "RACIST" and then pulling the cards out of my hands because they're problmatic. That's not how you make an ally. That's how you make enemies. If someone's **** hobby makes you uncomfortable because you think it's racist and it's NOT carving little swastika shaped flutes, you need some god damn counseling.

The Culture War have been going on for a while. Now it's getting so out of hands.
All the power seem to reside into 1% of the population, who are "offended" and want to control every single aspects of our lives.
No wonder most of those activists are seen as the enemy of the People and of Western values.

Last elections in the UK gave a historical victory to the conservatives. Trump is most likely to landslide in 2020.
And in Canada, Trudeau will win yet another term because Canada is weird.

Anyway, the average Joe didn't care about the Culture War because it didn't affected him. But now that Gone With The Wind, Tom Sawyer, and many other classics are getting censored and purged, the average Joe is finally taking notice.

Also, those Leftists "revolutionaries" are going full TALIBAN by destroying statues of American heroes and leaders. Even some media like the old magazine Popular Mechanics are supporting the terrorists. The far left have tugged the rubber band too hard for way too long. The inevitable whiplash is coming.

Actually the last two British elections have been all about Brexit to be fair, not a culture war. Saying that I'm expecting Trump to be re-elected mainly by virtue of the pattern that seems to be in place since Bill Clinton (unless Bush Sr was a two term president, which in that case the pattern started with him).

This is absolutely right and the heart of the important issue at hand.

Sometimes this kind of re-evaluation of things is the right thing to do, in other cases it shows ignorance of context and seems silly.

Some examples I can think of which have been changed in the past:
Enid Blyton's Noddy books characters - the villains changed to be elves.
Agatha Christie's book Ten Litter Soldiers - title was changed to this.
Robertsons Jams logo - they now use Paddington Bear as a mascot.
(I am choosing not to mention what they have been changed from bit the info is available to google.)

However changes like you speak of with the card game are essentially cultural niceties which don't address the bigger issues. They don't bother me themselves being made, certainly if they make others feel more included but I have to wonder how many were asking for them to be made. I'm cautious it's just papering over the cracks to look like something's being done but achieves very little meaningful change.

It's also about culture. When the Saint George flag is seen as "racist" and such, it would be like if Quebec's flag is seen as "racist". Western traditions and culture are being attacked left and right. Most people want this to stop and things to return to normalcy.

Even here in Canada this is happening. At least, it's way less intense and the would be rioters have been quickly stopped by the BLM protesters here. Canadians seem to be more civilised nowadays.

I only say it wasn't a culture war because people on both sides of the left/right divide actually voted for Brexit in the first place. I mean isn't that what a culture war comes down to? Us vs them, right vs left etc etc.

As for the magic the gathering thing, they've been censoring cards since the days of the original unholy strength, this is hardly suprising.
